Prereq: Admission to counselor education doctoral program and consent of the instructor. May be repeated. Maximum 12 hours. S/NC only. Internship Goals The internship provides doctoral students with experience in advanced counseling, teaching, and/or supervision practice. (2) Demonstrate counseling, teaching, and/or supervision skills consistent with ethical and professional standards. (3) Practice while receiving supervision provided by a group faculty supervisor and a credentialed counseling professional or faculty member. CACREP Guidelines The Doctoral Program in Counselor Education uses the following CACREP standards to guide internship instruction. The Counselor Education Internship addresses and/or reinforces the Council for Accreditation of Counseling Related Educational Programs (CACREP) 2009 Doctoral Standards in Counselor Education and Supervision, Section II Professional Identity, Section III Professional Practice and Section IV Learning Outcomes: 1

Internship Requirements Liability Insurance Purchase counseling liability insurance prior to the beginning of the internship through the UTK Risk Management Office by contacting Synthia Clark in EPC main office. You must have proof of counseling insurance before providing counseling to client, or teaching or supervising students. YOU MUST PROVIDE INSTRUCTOR WITH EVIDENCE OF YOUR LIABILITY INSURANCE BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOUR PLACEMENT. Professional disclosure statement The purpose of the professional disclosure statement is to provide the recipient of services information about your current status as a doctoral intern, past experience, competence, licensure, commitment to code of ethics, and guidelines for confidentiality. Ethics Pledge A copy of the ethics pledge is in the Practicum and Internship Handbook. The purpose of the ethics pledge is to document that you have read and studied the professional ethical standards related to the internship activity and are committed to upholding those standards. Internship Contract The internship contract represents an agreement among you, your site supervisor, and your internship supervisor focused on your goal, task, and outcome commitment for the semester. These may be adjusted at any time during the semester. Develop Permission to Tape Form and Obtain Permission to Tape Obtain permission to tape from counselees or students. Taping, Written Notes, and Supervision The amount of taping is to be negotiated with site and group supervisor and depends upon setting, responsibilities, and goals of the internship. Fill out the Report of Counseling, Supervision, or Teaching Session form. There is a specific form for each of the internship activities (counseling, supervision or teaching). The teaching form is a class planning and evaluation document. Turn in these reports each week to the site supervisor; turn these forms in to the group supervisor at the full group internship meetings. Attendance and Participation It is extremely important that you attend group supervision sessions, contribute to class discussions, and complete assigned activities. Failure to attend two scheduled sessions will result in an NC. It is also important that you fulfill your commitments to your internship site and provide appropriate notice when you are unable to attend. Your attendance and participation in class are critical. We will use much of our time in group internship to review, critique, and develop your counseling, supervision, and teaching skills. Your skill development will come from the feedback you receive from your peers, site supervisor, and group instructor, as well as from the process of giving feedback to help your 4

peers develop their skills. Please be on time for class (and for your internship work as well). If you must miss or be late due to a highly unusual and seemingly unavoidable circumstance, please contact me in advance or as soon as possible afterward. Taping Be prepared to play a minute segment of your recent work for discussion and feedback on designated days. In preparation for this group supervision, review your selected session tape and set it to the section that you would most like feedback. An occasionally understandable reason for not pre-reviewing your tape before internship class would be if you have just finished a clinical, teaching, or session/class shortly before class about which you have strong feelings and would like feedback. For the rare, pre-approved clinical internship sites in which taping is not allowed, provide a comparable, well thought-out case process description with questions/decisions with which you would like the group s help. Written Project and Presentation Each intern will prepare the following: Written Project Clinical Internship You will become an expert on at least one client and will develop a case study that includes the following information: Description of the client (age, grade, affect, behavior, and academic performance) Description of developmental, cultural, special needs issues General impression of the client including your personal thoughts/feelings Goal Strategy of client progress Evaluation Ethical issues Research that reflects your case The case study needs to be articulated through a theoretical framework or research perspective. Supervision Internship You will prepare an Assessment of Supervision that includes the following: Supervision philosophy and theoretical orientation Articulate how this philosophy informs your practice Highlights at least two students and describes an assessment of their progress in practicum/internship and your role in their progress Description of developmental, cultural, special needs issues Your evaluation of your performance as a supervisor (strengths and challenges) Ethical issues Research that reflects your work Teaching Internship You will prepare an Assessment of Teaching that includes the following: 5

Teaching philosophy and theoretical orientation Highlights at least two students and describes an assessment of their progress as related to teaching assignments, classroom discussion, activities, and teaching strategies Description of developmental, cultural, special needs issues Records strengths and weaknesses of teaching Provides a plan for improvement of teaching Ethical issues Research that reflects your work If you are in your second or third clinical, supervision or teaching internship, please prepare an advanced special project. This is a project of your choice that demonstrates or addresses one of the issues, challenges, or interests related to experiences during the clinical or teaching internship. This project needs to be negotiated between you and the instructor and includes components related to professional experience, research, theory, and counselor education. The project culminates in a written project and a presentation. Presentation Each student will orally present their written project. Internship Forms Complete the Internship Log. Turn in the internship log as required. Complete the Mid term and Final Evaluation form. Complete the Placement Evaluation form. Complete the Internship Summary form. Note: The site supervisor will meet with the intern once each week for individual supervision. The formal evaluation will be an assessment of the intern s clinical knowledge, skills, values, and practice along with self-awareness, ethical principles, and responsiveness to clinical issues. 6

Evaluation Evaluation is based upon completion of the required assignments and evaluations. An integral component of the internship is the evaluation procedure. It is essential that clinical and teaching interns learn to think critically about their professional performances. Interns must have individual supervision meetings with the site supervisor on a regular basis. Interns should periodically evaluate themselves identifying both strengths and weaknesses. Evaluation is continuous throughout the internship and the professional career. Mid-term and final evaluations Students and site supervisors must meet in the middle of the semester and at the end of the semester to formally evaluate intern performance using corresponding evaluations from the Practicum and Internship Handbook. Site-visits for Clinical Supervision You will need to work with me to arrange a site visit this semester to see your work place, meet your site supervisor, discuss strengths, weaknesses, and any difficulties encountered Professional disclosure for counselors (A) A doctoral intern with clinical, instructional, or supervision responsibilities is required to review a professional disclosure statement (or information contained in the statement) before providing services to a counselee, student, or supervisee. The doctoral intern may provide the counselee, student, or supervisee with a copy of the professional disclosure statement and/or asked the recipient to indicate that he or she has read the statement. The intern may also make a copy of that statement available. (B) The professional disclosure statement shall contain: (1) The name, title, and contact phone number of the intern. (2) The intern s current status as a doctoral student in counselor education and responsibility as a doctoral intern in clinical, teaching, or supervision. (3) The formal professional education of the intern, including his or her academic degrees related to counseling. (4) The intern s area of experience and competence in counseling. (5) The type of license(s) held by the intern. (C) The following legal and ethical principles apply to services provided: (1) Name of Code of Ethics being followed. (2) Mandates of Confidentiality (list exceptions, danger to self and others, danger to another person, best interests are at stake, required by law to disclosure confidential information). Note that in any of these situations minimum amount of information will be disclosed and client, supervisee, or student will be informed of the disclosure. 7
