4 As president of the Committee to celebrate the 100 th Anniversary of UPRM, have developed the structure and plans to celebrate this important moment in our history with academic, cultural, social activities starting for the five preceding years leading to the big celebration in As co coordinator of the BEAMS project, I have set the plans in conjunction with the executive committee to implement a number of activities that will improve our student engagement leading to better academic performance from our students and improvements in their overall formation as future professionals and as citizens, concentrating in the area of better student-faculty interaction. As Director of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning, I was instrumental in reorganizing the office and expanding its service to the University by hiring the adequate personal and using technology as well as implementing good practices of strategic planning and assessment. I attended the Foundation for the Practice of Institutional Research Institute, organized by the Association of Institutional Research (AIR), in Columbus, Ohio from July 25 through 29, I have attended the AIR Forums in 2003, 2004, 2005, and We have presented in the Forums in I was instrumental in the creation and development of the Office of Continuous Improvement and Assessment. I was a member of the Society of College and University Planners and have attended many of its annual conferences. As Director of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning, I lead the effort to improve student engagement through the BEAMS (Building Engagement and Attainment for Minority Students) project. The Institute for Higher Education Policy administered this project through a grant by the Lumina Foundation. As Director of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning, I supervised the design and construction of the new Biology Building as well as the new Business Administration Building. Presently the Museum of Art and Academic Senate and the Center for Research in Agricultural Industry are under construction. Construction of the following buildings will commence shortly: renovations of Celis and the old Business Administration buildings for administrative and faculty office use, respectively. These projects represent more that $60 million in major capital investment for our campus. The construction of the natatorium, tennis courts and racquetball courts for the Mayagüez 2010 will commence shortly under the sponsorship of the government of Puerto Rico. As the Director of the Civil Infrastructure Research Center, I helped in the transformation of the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Puerto Rico from a faculty fully dedicated to teaching to one more balanced between research and teaching. As a founding member of the Center for Professional Enrichment, I have contributed in forming an atmosphere where quality teaching is a real concern and where professors can find a space to discuss and develop the skills required to do a good job as teachers. I attended the one-week long ExCEEd Teaching Workshop sponsored by ASCE. As coordinator of the UPR/MIT Professional Development Program, I was able to prove, through practice, that the educational process is best served through interdisciplinary cooperation and the use of a real engineering project.
