Maximum Period of Study: 8 years (for normative 4-year degree) 6 years (for Advanced Standing I (Note 1) and Advanced Standing II (Note 2) during the transitional years 2010/11 and 2011/12) Minimum Number of Credit Required for the Award Normative 4-year degree Advanced Standing I (Note 1) (Catalogue Term: : Sem A 2013/14) (Catalogue Term: : Sem A 2013/14) (Minimum credit units for graduation: 120; (Minimum credit units for graduation: 90; Maximum credit units permitted for students: 144) Minimum: 120 Credit (GE: 30; SR: 21; MC: 27; ME: 24; FE/Minor: 18) Maximum credit units permitted for students: 114) Minimum: 93 Credit (GE: 21; SR: 21; MC: 27; ME: 24) Aims of Major This major will produce professionals in creative media who are strongly versed in computing technology. The main emphasis of this major is on the technology underlying 1
2 digital media, but graduates will also receive a solid foundation in the creative process including video, sound, storytelling, game design, computer graphics, installation and interactive digital media production. Graduates should be able to exploit the latest computing and media technologies in the creation of various media including computer games, computer animation and special effects, Internet applications and mobile devices and services. This major combines the core courses from both the School of Creative Media and the Department of Computer Science to produce graduates that bridge the gap between the technical and artistic side of the media field. Intended Learning Outcomes of Major (MILOs) (Please state what the student is expected to be able to do at the completion of the Major according to a given standard of performance.) A. At completion of the School Foundation Courses (first two semesters), students should be able to: (1) identify & describe key principles in visual thinking and visualization, sound and audio arts, computation, the dynamics of creative media practices and society, and relating artistic practice to the sciences; (2) apply the fundamental principles in (1) to interpret and solve problems in their creative projects; (3) produce creative works that use digital technology as a medium of artistic creation and expression; (4) explain and describe the artistic and technological characteristics of their works; (5) identify and describe their own personal artistic styles and preferences that would lead to sound decisions in possible concentration; (6) manage independently their own learning process through a mixture of artistic creation and critical analysis; (7) identify and describe basic computing and programming concepts and techniques for digital media, human computer interactions, and Internet content creation. Upon successful completion of this Major, students should be able to: (1) Demonstrate proficiency in both the artistic and technical aspects of digital media production. (2) Apply knowledge and skill in computer science to the creation, development and processing of digital media software and contents. (3) Identify and analyze the impact of media technologies on the broader social environment. (4) Work effectively as a member of a creative team, and contribute to both the technical and creative sides of media projects. (5) Prepare himself/herself for continuous advancements in media technologies through life-long learning. 2
3 (6) Demonstrate problem-solving skill and resource management skills. Part II Degree Requirement 1. Gateway Education ( Normative 4-year Degree Advanced Standing I (Note 1) English* (Senate/68/A4R) University English (GE1401) and Discipline-specific English 6 credit units University English (GE1401) and Discipline-specific English 6 credit units Chinese Civilisation History and Philosophy Area requirements: A minimum of 3 credit units from each of the three areas below: Area 1: Arts and Humanities Area 2: Study of Societies, Social and Business Organisations Area 3: Science and Technology 3 credit units 3 credit units 21 credit units 12 credit units * Students with an entry qualification in English of below Level 4 for HKDSE, or below Grade D for HKALE AS are required to complete EL0200 English for Academic Purposes before proceeding to take University English (GE1401) and Discipline-specific English. The credits of the EAP course will NOT be counted towards the minimum credit required for graduation and will NOT be included in the calculation of CGPA. 2. English Language Requirement (Senate/82/A5R) To fulfil the English Language Requirement, students should complete the required Gateway Education English courses. Students whose level of attainment in the English language subject of their entry qualifications is below a specified grade/level as determined by the University are required to complete the English for Academic Purposes course (no credit units toward graduation requirements) prior to taking the aforementioned Gateway Education English courses. Students who passed the Gateway Education English courses totalling 6 credit units are recognised as fulfilling the English Attainment Requirement. 3. Chinese Language Requirement (Senate/70/A5R) (Please indicate your College or School s decision on the Chinese Language Requirement for the groups of students mentioned in (ii) and (iii) below. If Colleges/Schools require students mentioned in (iii) to complete any Chinese language courses, please state (a) the number of credits to be taken; (b) whether the credits should be counted towards the minimum credit units required for graduation; and (c) whether the credits should be included in the calculation of CGPA. However, this course will not form part of the General Education curriculum.) 3
4 From 2012 cohort onwards, students are required to satisfy the Chinese Language Requirement as follows: (i) Students with an HKDSE score below 4 in Chinese, or an HKALE AS Chinese Language and Culture score below D 3-credit unit CHIN1001 University Chinese I ( 大 學 中 文 I)* (ii) Students with an HKDSE score of 4 or above in Chinese or an HKALE AS Chinese Language and Culture score D or above, or those who have successfully completed the 3-credit unit Chinese course No requirement ^ (iii) Students whose qualifications do not fall within (i) and (ii) above No requirement ^ *The 3 credit units of the Chinese course will NOT be counted towards the minimum credit units required for graduation and will NOT be included in the calculation of CGPA. ^ Approved by SCM School Board at its meeting in January
