3 HANZE UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES, GRONINGEN History of Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen In 1798, six citizens of the city of Groningen founded a university of applied sciences, creating the first multi-sector institute of higher education in the Netherlands. The founders had a goal to enhance professional practice and started a university that welcomed both the rich and poor. The university offered subjects in art, construction engineering and navigation. The fulltime two-year Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Scenography offers you a track of theatrical research, theoretical reflection and practical experience, and an opportunity to acquire a profound understanding of the significance and applications of scenography in the theatre and in theatrical spaces. The exit performance criteria imply that you are able to make a substantial contribution to the development of the occupational field. This master s programme seeks to enable you to specialise and enhance your knowledge in the field of scenography and art direction. The programme aims to achieve this objective by: Enhancing your understanding of professional theatrical organisation and production Teaching you to fathom interdisciplinary artistic moments from a visual, imaginative and theoretically reflective perspective Offering various opportunities of a social deepening of theatre. The Master Course Scenography/Art Direction also covers, among other things, computer games, theatrical scenography and film, etc. Much attention is paid to the application of computer media. The course revolves around four starting points: research, representation, acquisition of in-depth knowledge, and reflection. Just like theatre in practice, the programme is subject to ongoing change. The assignments you will work on cover both theoretical and practical aspects. Similarly, the your own research projects also have a dual nature; they are intended to stimulate the development of your own theatre design practice as well as theoretical reflection on that development. Prominent guest lecturers from the work field contribute to the programme. Part of the programme includes lectures at the University of Groningen, theory and dramaturgical lessons at the FMI Master, and visits to theatrical productions. The practice-oriented components you will carry out consist of both individual and group projects and of cooperative projects with theatre organisations and theatremakers. In addition, students also conduct individual research consisting of designing and implementing scenographic projects. The study programme is spread over four semesters, each lasting 20 weeks. There is an assessment at the end of each semester, and the fourth semester is rounded off by a final exam. Facilities You will have the opportunity to make use workplaces seven days a week, in line with the relevant regulations. Throughout the programme you will have access to the programme areas, comprising an auditorium, a number of recording studios, student areas or working studios with excellent computer facilities and a media lab. Career perspectives The professional practice for scenographers has expanded considerably in the past few decades as a result of the blurring of boundaries between artistic and cultural expressions. As an MFA Scenography graduate you can design all possible spatial environments, from traditional proscenium stages to visual theatre (on location) and virtual spaces. You will be able to accept and work on all assignments that need ideas for a dramatic design of space. For more information visit: The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Painting focuses on developing an artistic system characterised by a sound individual ground, a clear artistic view and strong professionalism. To achieve this, an intensive and reflective practice and an inquiring mind are essential. The course requires research with various objectives. First, we distinguish research for the purpose of developing your own work. Secondly, reflection on your own practice. Finally, the work of art may serve to research a question or issue (artistic or otherwise). Consequently, it is not a matter of a general or domain-specific methodology that is being taught, but rather of individual supervision of the research process. Within MFA Painting, research results represent an explicit view of your own work and art in general on the one hand, and visual work of good quality based on theoretical study on the other. The presentation of research results (visual or otherwise) is an equally important point of particular interest within the course. The programme was set up to give visual artists the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, insight and skills. The course is not a workplace with the main function to offer facilities to work. It is first and foremost regarded as a place to study. Theory, reflection and research play a central role in the programme, together with the visual work. You will attend lectures at Hanze UAS and establish dialogues with regard to art-theoretical issues, in order to further develop your mode of thought in close connection with the visual work. The MFA Painting seeks to train students to explore and push out the You will have access to studios seven days a week and can make use of the available equipment. frontiers of visual art from a painter s mind and way of thinking. This makes the art of painting a major point of reference of the course without necessarily highlighting painting per se. The art of painting serves as a source of inspiration, but all the time its frontiers and the space outside them are being explored. Facilities You will have access to studios seven days a week and can make use of the available equipment, including exceptional computer facilities, in line with regulations. Also, you can make use of facilities such as editing machines, photography and video equipment, the media lab, and courses that are part of other advanced education programmes. Career prospects The Master of Fine Arts Painting introduces visual artists into society, enabling them to make a vital and personal contribution to the development of painting and its significance for our culture, from a clear understanding of both the practice and theory of visual art. As an artist you will be able to give shape to contemporary notions on the basis of conceptual, professional, theoretical and innovative skills. The programme was set up to give visual artists the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, insight and skills. As a graduate you will be able to draw up strategic plans for your work processes, formulate your own artistic theories, and communicate about your work. This will enable you to secure an ongoing and prominent position on various platforms of the art market For more information visit: Master of Fine Arts Scenography Master of Fine Arts Painting

The workshops are always geared to practical skills and the acquisition of in-depth knowledge and insight. In addition to the obligatory programme, there will be room for you to take part in master classes and visit at least two media festivals.
