2 Project Project summary Application ID: HE-2011_1a Title Nordplusnätverk Nordiska biblioteksskoler / The Nordplus Network for Library and Information Science Purpose (describe the purpose of the project) Library and information science (LIS) is a narrow discipline in the Nordic and Baltic countries, with few and small milieus, but still internationally well known for its academic contributions to the field. Being relatively few, and covering a wide range of topics, it is vital to draw upon each others experience. The main purpose of the network is to be an arena for sharing knowledge in the fields of education and research within LIS. By working together towards a common goal and increasing cooperation between the Nordic/Baltic countries, the network believes that positive results will be seen. Through this network we can further develop high quality education and research within LIS. We believe that being part of this network will strengthen the field in the Nordic/Baltic region and also facilitate the standing in education and research on a global scale. Project summary (write a synopsis of the project, not more than 250 words) The Nordplus network for LIS has existed since 1989 as a network for student exchange between schools of LIS. The number of participating partners in the network has increased every year and today the network has fifteen members. The main purpose of the network is to be an arena for sharing knowledge in the fields of education and research within LIS. During this project period, the network will focus on exchange and marketing of the network in order to enhance the number of student interested in exchange studies within the Nordic/Baltic region. Teacher mobility and experiences from teachers in other countries is another area that the network will focus on in our ambition to enlarge and renew the network. Because of the need to be a strong region in the global world, it is of great importance to cooperate and renew existing networks. This shall be done by arranging a network meeting where further development of the network will be discussed. 3 If this application is part of a network, please enter the network name here Nordplusnätverk Nordiska biblioteksskoler / The Nordplus Network for Library and Information Science Detailed specifications Background/motivation for the project Science The Nordplus network for LIS has existed since 1989 as a network for student exchange between schools of LIS. The number of participating partners in the network has increased every year and today the network has fifteen members. In the last application, the network expanded with one new member from the Baltic region and in 2011 the network received another new official member when Klaipeda University joined the network. LIS is a small subject in the Nordic/Baltic region and therefore cooperation is of great importance within this area. It is also vital to benefit from each other s experiences. The main purpose of the network is to be an arena for sharing knowledge in the fields of education and research within LIS. The network is continuously trying to develop and we can relate our project to this year s annual priority: renewal and enlargement of networks to include new partners. We have one new network member; Klaipeda University and we will have a network meeting during the project period as we have had for the last two project periods. By using the network, experiences in participating countries and its new members, good quality in education and research can be prioritized issues in discussions and the status of LIS in a Nordic/Baltic setting can be strengthened. One of the goals for the network is that Nordic/Baltic LIS schools shall become leading institutions in education and research in a global world. Focus for projects within the network has traditionally been student mobility, but now the network tries to renew and enlarge its focus and sees the involvement of academic staff, sharing of academic knowledge and best practice as very important tasks for the coming years. Project description (including account of planned activities/project plan) During this project period, the network will focus on student exchange and marketing of the network in order to enhance the number of student interested in exchange studies within the Nordic/Baltic region. If the number of students participating in the network increases, a positive spin-off effect will be "internationalisation@home" for the receiving institution and experiences from incoming students can be used as a base in the education. Other positive experiences for the network will be input from our new partners from the Baltic region. Teacher mobility and experiences from teachers in other countries is another area that the network will focus on in our ambition to enlarge and renew the network. If teachers travel between participating departments, especially to our new network members, other aspects of the subject will be distributed to a wider group of students and the subject will develop. This is a positive development and something that the network aims at prioritizing. Because of the need to be a strong region in the global world, it is of great importance to cooperate and enlarge existing networks, and therefore we would like to encourage the development of Nordic/Baltic cooperation. Areas which the network wants to focus on are quality issues and a good way to start discussing quality issues is to arrange network meetings where further development of the network will be discussed. Nordic LIS education has a long tradition of cooperation. Over the last decade, however, cooperation has mainly been restricted to on the one hand leadership and on the other the level of doctoral education. Cooperation between teachers responsible for education at bachelor and master level, however, has been less developed and even decreased since the 1990s. During the same period, curricula in LIS have undergone important changes, partly due to technological and social changes, partly due to the Bologna process. Different schools have responded differently to the change impulses. There is a need for mutual exchange of experiences and opinions on these changes and adaptations to create transparency, to learn from each other and to lay the foundation for an increased mobility of teachers and students. Description of partnership ("who does what") The network is depending on participation from all partners within the network. Student- and teacher mobility is the responsibility of each participating school and the ambition is that the network will have an overall supporting role. Changes in education, increasing Nordic/Baltic cooperation, curricula development on bachelor and master levels, common marketing and responsibility for education are possible cooperation areas in the Nordic/Baltic region, but are depending on the contribution by each participating partner. Each partner has to prioritize the issue and make it a part of the ordinary quality- and development work. With 3 / 11

4 this division of responsibility, a good base for cooperation can be created and hopefully the network will succeed in its ambitions to enlarge and renew. Results Expected outcome (Please describe the expected results of your project, who willbe effected and how, directly and/or indirectly) By increasing cooperation between the Nordic/Baltic countries the network believes that positive results will be seen. More cooperation and better understanding of education and research will lead to cooperation over national boarders and further development of common projects. We expect the project to fulfill the purpose of developing the network as an academic and administrative network of LIS where our small discipline will have impact in a Nordic/Baltic and global setting. We expect the network meetings to be important arenas for disseminating knowledge and the latest developments within the field. The network also believes that by promoting and working actively to enhance the interest for exchange among students and teachers, a balance between incoming and outgoing students/teachers can be created. If the network succeeds to create this balance, a positive attitude to the LIS- subject will be created which for example can be related to cultural experiences. Dissemination of results (Please focus on sharing the results with individuals, organisations or groups who are not your partners in this project) Annual network meetings will be a natural arena for dissemination of results. Increasing cooperation will lead to positive results within many areas. Research results can be spread to a wider audit, student and teacher mobility and education matters can be discussed and joint applications for funding from for example the Nordic Council and the European Union can be worked out. The network is also continuously updating its web pages with information about the network and its activities. How will you evaluate that your project has met its objectives By arranging meetings on a regular basis, the network will guarantee that set objectives are met. Quality is very important and results that can be seen will therefore be spread to a wider group of relevant people within the participating organizations. By activating and making sure that questions, results and other relevant topics are discussed on an internal basis at each department and spread to the network, a common method will be created to make sure that the set objectives are met. Furthermore a report on the network project is always submitted to CIMO after the project period. This is simultaneously distributed to the members of the network and evaluated in connection to the annual network meeting. Project period Start date (YYYY-MM-DD) Duration 12 (In months) 4 / 11
