1 Compiled by Univ. of Oregon African Studies Program Grant and Scholarship List 1 The following list of grants and scholarships was compiled by the University of Oregon s African Studies Program to support undergraduate and graduates students interested in African Studies. This list includes 33 scholarships or grants and details eligibility, deadlines, grant cycles and the organization s website. The list is organized by eligibility and there are separate sections for undergraduates only; undergraduates and graduate students; graduate students only; and funding for dissertation work. Some additional places you can search for fellowship information related to African Studies: UNDERGRADUATE ONLY SIT Scholarships Eligibility: SIT Study Abroad supports international opportunities for a wide range of students through its scholarship and grant programs. SIT scholarships are awarded to highly qualified students who demonstrate financial need. SIT grants and scholarships include but are not limited to SIT Pell Grant Match Award, the Compton Fund and the Sally Bragg Baker Scholarship. For a full list of SIT grants and scholarships please visit Deadline and Application Requirements: April 1 for summer programs May 15 for fall programs November 1 for spring programs Applying for an SIT scholarship is easy! i. When submitting your program application to SIT, be sure to indicate that you wish to apply for SIT scholarships. ii. Add SIT s school code (008860) to your FAFSA form. iii. Confirm receipt of all required financial aid information with the SIT Study Abroad financial aid coordinator (studyabroad.scholarships@sit.edu) or ). Grant Cycle and Award: Grants and Scholarships are awarded three times a year and vary in amount. Website: Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: Eligibility: For undergraduates to pursue study abroad and/or international internships. Applicants must be U.S. citizens (permanent residents are not eligible) and must be receiving (or provide proof that they will receive) a Federal Pell Grant. The Gilman seeks to fund students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad (minorities, students with disabilities, etc.) and those who choose non-traditional study abroad destinations. Deadline and Application Requirements:

2 Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit draft applications to UO Study Abroad Programs for review at least two weeks prior to the deadline. Visit the website below to apply. Late February (for summer, fall or academic year programs) Late September to early October (for winter or spring programs) Grant Cycle and Award: up to $5,000. Additional funds (up to $3,000) may be awarded to students studying critical need languages. Website: NSEP / Boren Undergraduate Scholarships: Eligibility: The National Security Education Program (NSEP) / Boren scholarships are awarded to undergraduates studying abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Preference is given to those pursuing studies of less commonly taught languages. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and selection is based on academic merit. Award recipients must fulfill a service requirement upon graduation, working for selected federal departments and agencies. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit draft applications to UO Study Abroad Programs for review at least one month prior to the UO deadline. For more information and application materials, go to the website below or contact UO Study Abroad Programs Deadline and Application Requirements: January 23, 2013 Grant Cycle and Award: Awarded annually. The maximum award amount is $8,000 for summer, $10,000 for one semester, and $20,000 for a full academic year. Roger and Ginny Reich Scholarship for Study Abroad Eligibility: The Roger and Ginny Reich Scholarship awards $1,000 to a student at the Clark Honors College attending a UO-sponsored study abroad program for a minimum of one full term. Applicants must have a 3.70 GPA. Deadline and Application Requirements: Mid February. Current students interested in applying should log into Blackboard and consult the CHC site for specific requirements and deadlines. These scholarships generally require that students be in good academic standing, and submit an essay and additional materials in February. Website: Shephard Family Scholarship for Study Abroad Eligibility: The Shephard scholarship awards $2,000 to a student at the Clark Honors College pursuing foreign language study in a year-long UO-sponsored study abroad

Applicants must have a 3.70 GPA. and preference is given to students in a yearlong academic program in a foreign language. If there are no eligible candidates, then any CHC student attending an approved UO study abroad program will be considered. Deadline and Application Requirements: Mid February. Current students interested in applying should log into Blackboard and consult the CHC site for specific requirements and deadlines. These scholarships generally require that students be in good academic standing, and submit an essay and additional materials in February. Winners are announced each March and funds are disbursed through the UO Billing Office. Scholarship winners are asked to write a letter of thanks to the scholarship's sponsor. Website: Jane C. Waldbaum Archaeological Field School Scholarship: Eligibility: Established in honor of AIA Past President Jane Waldbaum, this scholarship is intended to help students who are planning to participate in archaeological field work for the first time. Students majoring in archaeology or related disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. The Scholarship Fund provides $1000 each to help pay expenses associated with participation in an archaeological field work project (minimum stay one month/4 weeks). The scholarship is open to students who have begun their junior year of undergraduate studies at the time of application and have not yet completed their first year of graduate school at a college or university in the United States or Canada. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and must not have previously participated in archaeological field work of any kind. The committee will consider both academic achievement and financial need in its deliberations. AIA scholarships are open to students from all backgrounds. Deadline and Application Requirements: March 1, The Waldbaum Scholarship will be awarded to junior and senior undergraduates and first-year graduate students only. Grant Cycle and Award: Annual Award of $1000 each. Website: UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS Diversity Excellence Scholarship: Eligibility: The Diversity Excellence Scholarship (DES) recognizes the academic achievement and potential of students who, through sharing their varied cultural perspectives, will enhance the education of all UO students and the excellence of the university. Recipients of the scholarship will be expected to participate in community service opportunities to share cultural heritage, special skills and abilities, and diversity experiences. The Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence coordinates and supports these projects. To be considered, applicants must be a United States citizen or permanent resident, apply for admission by January 15, if you are an incoming student, or be a currently enrolled UO student in good academic standing and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor no later than February 1. List the UO as one of your first six choices. The school code is Deadline and Application Requirements: Jan 15 th Grant Cycle and Award: Annual award amounts for were $6,500 for undergraduate students and $9,000 for graduate students. These are renewable scholarships based on your grade level. The DES selection committee determines the amount and duration of each award.

4 Website: Mills Study Abroad Scholarship: Eligibility: Must be accepted for participation in UO-sponsored study abroad or IE3 international internship programs to be eligible. Additional Eligibility requirements are as follows: Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time, degree-seeking graduate or undergraduate student at the UO. Applicant must ultimately be accepted to participate in a UO-sponsored program. Applicant must have at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA. Applicant must demonstrate financial need (based on FAFSA). International students must complete a Financial Aid Worksheet, available during the application process. Deadline and Application Requirements: Scholarship applications open approximately 4 weeks prior to the scholarship deadline. To apply for this program, visit the website below. November 1, 2012 (for 2013 winter or winter/spring programs) February 1, 2013 (for 2013 spring term only programs) April 10, 2013 (for 2013 summer, fall or academic year programs) Grant Cycle and Award: 10 to 20 $500 scholarships are awarded each year. Website: Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Academic Year: Eligibility: FLAS fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and are administered through university centers, to assist students in acquiring foreign language and either area or international studies competencies. Students interested in receiving a FLAS apply directly to the centers. Current Africa centers include: Boston University; Harvard University; Indiana University; Michigan State University; Ohio University; University of California, Berkley; University of Florida; University of Kansas; University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; University of Pennsylvania (with Bryn Mawr College, Haverford College and Swathmore College); University of Wisconsin, Madison; and Yale University. African languages covered by FLAS include but are not limited to Arabic (in Africa), Swahili, Twi, Yoruba, Zulu. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Applications by students in professional fields are encouraged. Preference will be given to applicants with a high level of academic ability and with previous language training. Students receiving Academic Year Fellowships must be enrolled in full-time study for the duration of the FLAS award and must take one language course and one related area or international studies course each semester. Undergraduates may only receive FLAS funds for study of a language at the intermediate or advanced level. Deadline and Application Requirements: Application deadlines vary for each center but are usually in January for the following academic year. Grant Cycle and Award:. This is an annual grant cycle but students can apply to more then one center simultaneously. Award benefits include a stipend plus some or all tuition

For the academic year , the FLAS stipend is $15,000 for graduate students and $5,000 for undergrads. Summer Fellowships are for intensive language programs either domestically or abroad and require a separate application from the Academic Year Fellowship. Deadline and Application Requirements: Applications deadlines vary by center but are predominantly in mid January for the following summer. Grant Cycle and Award: Summer awards are approximately $5,000 and are given yearly. Website: Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes Eligibility: This scholarship is part of the National Security Language Initiative, a U.S. government interagency effort to encourage Americans to study critical need foreign languages. This scholarship, from the Department of State, will provide funding for U.S. citizen undergraduate, master s and Ph.D. students to participate in beginning, intermediate and advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers in eleven critical need foreign languages (Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu). 6 GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY Fulbright: Eligibility: These awards are given by the US Government and are open to students who have finished their Bachelors Degree in any field. A student can propose to study in any country, on any topic. There are grants for research, teaching and art projects. Types of grant, and funding vary by country but generally all living and travel expenses are covered during the 6 month through 1 year long fellowship. In most African countries, additional stipend support is possible for dependents. There is no requirement to work for the US government after receiving this award. Deadline and Application Requirements: Applications are due to the U of O in the fall for the next academic year grant cycle. Materials must be submitted by the campus deadline. UO alumni who have not subsequently matriculated at another university may apply through the UO campus process. Website: ghtonline.org/ Fulbright Student Program: Study/Research Awards Eligibility: Awards (for US citizens only) to more than 140 countries for an academic year of study are open to graduating seniors, master s degree students, Ph.D. candidates, artists, and young professionals. Website: Fulbright Student Program: English Teaching Assistantships (ETAs) Eligibility: Awards (for US citizens only) to teach English and/or US American culture in one of about 70 countries around the world, with placements in everything from elementary schools to universities. 7 Compiled by Univ. of Oregon African Studies Program Grant and Scholarship List 7 Website: Fulbright Student Program: Creative Arts Awards Eligibility: Awards (for US citizens only) to one of more than 50 countries for the completion of a creative project (in most fields of the arts, including creative writing, music, dance, visual arts, and others) that requires residence in the country. Some countries require enrollment in a training or academic course of study, but requirements vary widely. Applicants may be graduating seniors or graduate students. Deadline and Application Requirements: Applications are due to the U of O in the fall for the next academic year grant cycle. Materials must be submitted by the campus deadline. UO alumni who have not subsequently matriculated at another university may apply through the UO campus process. Website: Fulbright-Clinton Fellowships Eligibility: Awards (only for US citizens who will hold master's or JD degrees by Fall 2014) to one of about ten countries to serve in professional placements in foreign government ministries or institutions while simultaneously carrying out an academic study/research project. This particular award has no campus application process, so applicants will apply directly to the Fullbright office, though Dr. Adkins is happy to advise applicants and comment on their draft statements. Deadline and Application Requirements: January 10, 2014 (deadline for ) Website: Fulbright-mtvU Awards Eligibility: About four awards annually (for US citizens only) to one of more than 140 countries to conduct research on an aspect of international music culture, with a focus on contemporary or popular music as a cultural force or expression of change. This particular award has no campus application process, so applicants will apply directly to the Fullbright office, though Dr. Adkins is happy to advise applicants and comment on their draft statements. 8 Boren (Graduate): Eligibility: Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests. Countries in Africa include but are not limited to Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal and South Africa. For a complete list of countries, click here. Boren Fellows represent a variety of academic and professional disciplines, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages. For a complete list of languages, click here. Applicants should identify how their projects, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined. NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness. Deadline and Application Requirements: Application Deadline is January 28, :00 p.m. EST. Grant Cycle and Award: The maximum awarded is $30,000 per graduate student. The award is granted yearly. Website: Rotary Peace Fellowships Eligibility: Awards for completion of a master's degree program in international affairs, peace studies, or a related field at one of seven designated universities around the world. Note that a bachelor's degree and three years (or the equivalent) of full-time "paid or unpaid relevant work experience" are required at the time that the award begins. The UO does not advise applicants for this award. Please see the website above and contact the local (or your home district) Rotary Club for assistance. Deadline and Application Requirements: Anywhere from March to June, depending on local Rotary Club Grant Cycle and Award: Annual Website: orinternationalstudies/pages/howtoapply.aspx SYLFF Graduate Fellowships for International Research Eligibility: SYLFF Fellowships are awarded to approximately five Oregon University System master s or doctoral students each year who display potential for future leadership in international affairs, public life, and private endeavors. The stipend of up to $12,000 is awarded for the academic year to assist with educational and research expenses. Candidates are nominated by their respective graduate department/program and priority is given to nominations that exhibit strong institutional commitment (e.g. supplemental funding). Applications may be found on-line at the website above. Deadline is in early spring. Grant Cycle and Award: Annual Website: International Foundation for Science. Individual Research Grants: Eligibility: Applicants must be citizens of an eligible countries (see website below for full list), and carry out their research in an eligible country (this does not have to be the country of citizenship). Must have a minimum of an MSc, MA or equivalent academic degree and must be (for men) younger than 35 years of age, and (for women) 40 years of age. Applicants must be attached to a national research institute (e.g. university, nonprofit making research centre, or research-oriented NGO) in a developing country. The institution is expected to: administer the grant, guarantee that the applicant has a salary (or other source of income), and provide basic research facilities. Deadline and Application Requirements: Call will open Dec 1 st, Call Will close Jan 31 st, 2014 Grant Cycle and Award: Annual award and amount varies per grant. Website: NSF GRFP (National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program): Eligibility: The National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) helps ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and reinforces its diversity. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited US institutions. The NSF welcomes applications from all qualified students and strongly encourages under-represented populations, including women, underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities, to apply for this fellowship. Deadline and Application Requirements: November 4th-14 th depending on type of grant Grant Cycle and Award: $32,000 annual stipend. Website: Wenner-Gren: Eligibility: The Wenner-Gren Foundation has three major goals: to support significant and innovative anthropological research into humanity's biological and cultural origins, development, and variation; to foster the international community of research scholars in anthropology; and to provide leadership at the forefronts of the discipline Deadline and Application Requirements: Varies on program Grant Cycle and Award: Varies on program and grant Website: Woodrow Wilson Center: Eligibility: Through an international competition, the Center offers 9-month residential fellowships. Fellows conduct research and write in their areas of expertise, while interacting with policymakers in Washington and Wilson Center staff. The Center

10 accepts non-advocacy, policy-relevant, fellowship proposals that address key policy challenges facing the United States and the world. Deadline and Application Requirements: Oct 1 st, 2013 Grant Cycle and Award: Website: Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship: Eligibility: The Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship is funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The Department of State seeks a Foreign Service that reflects the diversity and excellence of our society. The Fellowship is designed to attract outstanding individuals from all ethnic, racial and social backgrounds who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career with the U.S. Department of State. The Pickering Fellowship has both an Undergraduate and Graduate Program. Pickering Undergraduate applicants must apply as rising seniors; Graduate applicants must be seeking admission to a two-year master s degree program in the fall of Deadline and Application Requirements: Undergraduate application deadline is January 24 th, Graduate application deadline is February 7 th, Grant Cycle and Award: Awarded annually. Fellow s receive funding up to $40,000 per year to cover tuition, room and board, books, mandatory fees and one round trip ticket between Fellow s residence and his/her academic institutions. Undergraduate Fellowship: senior year and first year of graduate school; Graduate Fellowship: first and second year of graduate school Website: pickeringfaf@woodrow.org DISSERTATION RESEARCH/WRITING Marcus Garvey Foundation Research Fellowship Eligibility: The Marcus Garvey Foundation graduate research fellowships support graduate students working in the areas of African, African diaspora, Caribbean, and African American History/Studies. This fellowship, named in honor of the Marcus Garvey Foundation, looks to support doctoral candidates doing primary research in the humanities and social sciences on topics related to Africa and the African diaspora. Those doctoral candidates using archival collections and/or conducting oral histories are especially encouraged to apply. Deadline and Application Requirements: Grant Cycle and Award: Awarded annually. A $500 grant it given to help defray research expenses. Website: Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Eligibility: These U.S. Department of Education awards differ from the Fulbright scholarships described previously. The Fulbright-Hays awards provide assistance for Ph.D. candidates engaged in full-time Ph.D. dissertation research in foreign language and

Awards cover travel, maintenance for the grantee and may provide some support for dependents. For more information and application materials, contact UO Study Abroad Programs. Deadline and Application Requirements: Applications are due the U of O in the fall for the next academic year grant cycle. Materials must be submitted by the campus deadline. UO alumni who have not subsequently matriculated at another university may apply through the UO campus process. Website: Jean Harvey Slappy Research Fellowship Eligibility: Jean Harvey Slappy Research Fellowship: This fellowship -- named in honor of long-time Marcus Garvey Foundation board member Jean Harvey Slappy -- looks to support doctoral candidates working on aspects of the history of the U.N.I.A. (Universal Negro Improvement Association), the A.C.L. (African Communities League), and/or Marcus Garvey's organizational activities, and who wish to use the recently deposited Thomas W. Harvey/U.N.I.A. papers (Finding Aid: located at Emory University's Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library. Research fellows receive grants of $500 to help defray expenses associated with travel to and use of the archival collection. "The Thomas W. Harvey Collection contains groundbreaking material that broadens our understanding of the Black freedom struggle in America and beyond. Deadline and Application Requirements: Grant Cycle and Award: Awarded annually. A $500 grant it given to help defray research expenses. Website: The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship: Eligibility: The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship competition might explore the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature. The Newcombe Fellowships are provided to Ph.D. candidates at American institutions located in the United States who will complete their dissertations during the fellowship year. The fellowship year for applications accepted by the deadline in 2013 will be for the academic year In the current Newcombe competition, at least 22 nonrenewable Fellowships of $25,000 will be awarded for 12 months of full-time dissertation writing; in addition, Fellows' graduate schools will be asked to waive tuition and/or remit some portion of their fees. Deadline and Application Requirements: November 15, 2013 (for ). Notification of awards occurs in April and public announcements are in May. 12 Council of American Overseas Research Centers. Multi-Country Research Fellowship: Eligibility: Must be a US citizen and either have received a Ph.D. or have complete all requirements accept your dissertation. Applicants must propose and conduct field research in at least two countries outside the United States, one of which must host an American overseas research center (ORC). Fellowship tenure must be of at least 90 days duration but does not need to be continuous. Deadline and Application Requirements: The deadline for application submission is Monday, January 13, 2014, 11:59pm EST. Grant Cycle and Award: Annual award not exceeding $10,500. No dependent allowance is available Website: Fellowships; DPDF Student Fellowship; International Dissertation Field Research Fellowships: Eligibility: The Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) offers nine to twelve months of support to graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled in PhD programs in the United States and conducting dissertation research on non-us topics. Eighty fellowships are awarded annually. Fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a perfellowship average of $20,000. The fellowship includes participation in an SSRC-funded interdisciplinary workshop upon the completion of IDRF-funded research. Deadline and Application Requirements: November 5 th, 2013 Grant Cycle and Award: Annual award with $20,000 per-fellowship average. Website: The Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women s Studies: Eligibility: The Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women s Studies encourages original and significant research about women that crosses disciplinary, regional, or cultural boundaries. Previous Fellows have explored such topics as transnational religious education for Muslim women, the complex gender dynamics of transidentity management, women s electoral success across racial and institutional contexts, women s sports, militarism and the education of American women, and the relationship between family commitments and women s work mobility. The Women s Studies Fellowships are provided to Ph.D. candidates at institutions in the United States who will complete their dissertations during the fellowship year. The most competitive applications include not only a clear, thorough, and compelling description of the candidate s work, but also evidence of an enduring interest in and commitment to women s issues and scholarship on women.
