Irish Colcannon 1 lb sliced potatoes, 2 medium parsnips, peeled and sliced 2 medium leeks 1 cup milk lb kale or 1 lb cabbage 1/2 teaspoon mace 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons butter 1 bunch fresh parsley, chopped Directions: 1 Boil the potatoes and parsnips in water until tender. 2 While these are cooking, chop leeks (greens as well as whites) and simmer in the milk until soft. 3 Next, cook the kale or cabbage and have warm and well chopped. 4 Drain the potatoes, season with mace, garlic, salt and pepper, and beat well. 5 Add the cooked leeks and milk (be careful not to break down the leeks too much). 6 Finally, blend in the kale or cabbage and butter. 7 The texture should be that of a smooth-buttery potato with well distributed pieces of leek and kale. 8 Garnish with parsley. 9 Colcannon is also made by cooking layered vegetables, starting with potatoes, in a slow-cooker during the day. 10 Drain vegetables blend with milk and margarine as above and garnish with parsley.

Featured Group; The Diehards Specialising in the Victorian period, this group also known as the Middlesex Regiment are second to none. Even the youngest boys are perfectly groomed. Their drill is perfect and their boots are well bulled What I love about this group is that the chaps are actually gentlemen, and that the women are polite and refined. In many groups it is not unusual to see a soldier who looks like a lawyer dressed up. The Diehard camp genuinely makes you feel as if you are in As new recruits are trained outside their lines of bell tents, you lose track of the modern age.
The group was established in 1993 as part of the Victorian Military Society. For details see thediehards.co.uk or contact Tim Rose;

XS420 by Richard Hall On 22 August 1987 I and my friend Mike Potten attended the Last Lightning Airshow at RAF Binbrook. This was to be the final major public outing for the iconic aircraft that still holds to this day such affection with aviation enthusiasts worldwide. The weather was atrocious with low cloud and rain. However, the Lightning Boys of No 5 and No 11 Squadrons still put on a great show with a mass take off and superb formation flypasts. In a way the weather was fitting as this is what the Lightning was designed to fly in as it intercepted intruders who neared the UK's airspace. The term "all weather" certainly applied to the Lightning, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year as it held Quick Reaction Alert. We came away form Binbrook thinking that we would never see the like again and we haven't. So over the years we have both had a great affinity with the Lightning and we have always wanted the chance to own one or at least maybe a cockpit. I have returned to Binbrook on a couple of occasions recently. It was a very odd experience as it is now so quiet and still. Did what I witnessed twenty five years ago actually happen? It must have done as I was there, although it now hard to believe. The date of my last visit was 16 June I stood on the remains of the runway and pictured in my mind the Lightning s on approach, as they crossed the Lincolnshire Wolds, to land in a cloud or burnt rubber and streaming braking chutes. The vision and atmosphere again left a lasting impression on me. So the next day I went to Cockpit Fest at Newark. I was surprised to see that Lightning T.5 XS420 was up for sale, well with the previous evenings thoughts and memories, I saw it as fate. I called Mike and after a brief conversation we agreed that we should express our interest in acquiring XS420. In due course we purchased the aircraft and that is how we became the proud owners of XS420.
XS420 is a Lightning T.5 which is the training version of the single seat fighter. The aircraft was built in 1965 and last flew in The trainer version was required as when the supersonic Lightning was coming into service in the 1960 s, it was so radically different from current front line RAF fighters. It was considered that a pilot could not simply convert from a Hunter or Javelin onto a complex aircraft such as the Lightning, without time on type. As there were no trainer versions available of the Lightning, the T.4 was procured which in turn was followed by the T.5. XS420 was constructed at Warton and undertook her first flight on 23 January 1965 in the hands of D.M.Knight. The aircraft then went onto to serve with the following squadrons and units. 226 Operational Conversion Unit - 29 April 1965 Binbrook Aircraft Storage & Support Flight then to Lightning Training Flight (V) - 18 September 1976 Loan to No 5 Squadron LTF (DV) - 17 December 1980 To Lightning Engineering Support Flight - 26 May 1983 Total hours flown The aircraft finished its career at RAF Binbrook and after being used as a surface decoy, luckily found its way into the world of preservation. In 2003, XS420 was chosen to appear at the annual Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) which was celebrating 100 years of powered flight during that year. For this appearance the aircraft was restored by the RAF into the paint scheme which it wears today. After RIAT, XS420 relocated to Farnborough Air Sciences Trust (FAST) where the aircraft took up gate guardian duties to the museum and she remains there to this day. Our aim is to keep the aircraft at its present location and to carry out restoration and conservation work. We have recently purchased a good deal of the cockpit instrumentation, panels etc and hope over time to bring the cockpit back to its former glory. A few bits are missing still but it is hoped these parts can be picked up in due course. There will be a far amount of checking of e-bay and scouring aero jumbles to achieve this. Some work is also required on the wings where they were cut for transportation. The intention is to remove the existing panels and to re-skin using sheet aluminium. This will help with the weatherproofing of the wings, in which we have found a fair bit of water recently. It is no easy task taking on an historic aircraft but both Mike and I feel Britain s aviation heritage needs to be preserved for future generations to enjoy and understand. So coupled with the work on XS420 we are also hoping to reunite the aircraft with some of those who flew and maintained her. To this end a website has been created that will record the aircraft's history, restoration and in time, reminiscences of former pilots and ground crew. If you are interested in the history of XS420 or Lightning s in general, please visit
