5 CCO Member News 5 CCO Member Roundtable Event Over 70 CCO members gathered in Toronto on March 19th for an exclusive roundtable event. CCO Executive Director Paul Kitchin provided an overview of the association s activities and then members broke out into discussion groups. The topics that were discussed during the event included Key Performance Indicators, the International Student Program, advocacy, OSAP and the Ontario Tuition Grant, compliance, the PCC Act Review, and social media. Feedback from the session was overwhelmingly positive and identified areas in need of further discussion or workshops. Stay tuned for upcoming member events throughout the year. CCO Board member Frank Gerencser and External Advisor to the Board Carol Bruni gave Ministry officials a career college tour on March 24th. The tour took Marilyn Gurevsky, MTCU Manager of the Quality and Partnerships Ministry Tour Unit, Sam Andrey, MTCU Manager of Student Financial Assistance Program, and Noel Abbott, MTCU Manager of Registrations to six career colleges in Toronto.
6 Ontario Liberal Party Heritage Dinner 2014 CCO attended the annual Ontario Liberal Party Heritage Dinner in Toronto on March 20th. Over 2,000 attendees gathered at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre for the event. Premier Kathleen Wynne took her place centre stage in front of a sea of red to highlight key aspects of the party s platform. CCO s Paul Kitchin and Alix Matthews-Mahé had the opportunity to speak with MTCU Minister Brad Duguid, as well as two former MTCU Ministers John Milloy and Glen Murray. CCO also spoke with Liberal party staffers and provincial stakeholders. Another notable event attendee was the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau. 6 Partnership creates cyber-security jobs in Ottawa Fortinet a global leader in high-performance network security recently announced extending its relationship with Willis College of Business, Technology and Healthcare in Ottawa in order to train future employees. We hear a lot about the skills gap in Canada. Willis College s partnership with Fortinet will help address this gap and provide training and meaningful employment to unemployed or underemployed Canadians. Fortinet and Willis College are working together to develop a new Advanced Network Security Professional Program focused on developing technical and professional skills necessary to design, implement and support the security requirements of complex networks. To date, Fortinet has hired more than 40 graduates of Willis College and, thanks to this investment, expects to hire even more over the next five years. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate Fortinet on making this substantial investment in training their workforce of the future and creating high-paying jobs for Canadians, said Jason Kenney, minister of employment and social development and minister for multiculturalism. This is exactly the type of employer investment in training that our Government is trying to encourage with the Canada Job Grant. Today s announcement also demonstrates the good work career colleges like Willis College are doing to train Canadians for jobs that are in-demand in today s labour market, Kenney added. We hear a lot about the skills gap in Canada. Willis College s partnership with Fortinet will help address this gap and provide training and meaningful employment to unemployed or underemployed Canadians, said Rima Aristocrat, president and CEO of Willis College. Fortinet s investment in this process includes the construction and establishment of a comprehensive network security lab at Willis College s Ottawa campus. This will be in addition to technical curriculum development, training assistance and overall program direction. Having worked with Willis College for four years, we feel certain that we will succeed in the development of a curriculum that will teach students valuable skills and qualify them for positions that we have open today and in the future, said Michael Anderson, vice-president of global support and services for Fortinet. With these new programs, the intention is to create at a significant number of well-paying, full time jobs in Ottawa in the coming years. ABOUT FORTINET Fortinet is a worldwide provider of network security appliances and a market leader in unified threat management. Founded in 2000, Fortinet is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California and has offices around the world. Its clients include enterprises, service providers and government entities worldwide, including the majority of the 2011 Fortune Global 100. ABOUT THE PROGRAM The new Advanced Network Security Professional Program will result in students being immediately qualified to be Professional Services Engineers, Sales Engineers, Technical Account Managers and Escalation Engineers. It is an extension of the program already offered at Willis College called the Network Systems IT Security Professional Program. JOB PROSPECTS IN THE FIELD The need for security in the information technology (IT) field has grown with the sector as a whole. In an era where governments, companies and individuals routinely use IT as a medium for sensitive communications and transactions, system security is an increasingly essential component for modern societies. This creates opportunities for IT professionals willing to train in cyber security. In the words of U.S. Homeland Security s Deputy Undersecretary for Cyber Security Mark Weatherford: What s the unemployment rate for a good cyber security person? Zero. Particularly in Canada, Cyber security professionals are in very short supply, according to a study on cyber security published in 2011 by Professional Engineers of Ontario, also quoted by the Information and Communication Technology Council. IT security is, and will continue to be, a high-demand field for the foreseeable future. Fortinet_8x6_ADV.indd :09 PM
7 7 City of Toronto Workshop The City of Toronto held a first ever workshop for Career Colleges on March 25th. The workshop focused on understanding the needs of Toronto s Career Colleges and identifying potential collaborative opportunities. The General Manager of the Economic Development and Culture Division of the City of Toronto, Mike Williams, highlighted the importance of the career college sector to the city s economic development in his opening remarks. You are a core component of that skilled labour force, said Williams. Your focus is on getting people good jobs. That s our focus too. Senior Education Advisor for the City of Toronto Jagdish Yadav provided statistics on Toronto s career colleges and suggested areas for potential collaboration between the city and its career colleges. Those opportunities included providing a positive experience for students, engaging in joint advocacy, and focusing on emerging growth areas. CCO Executive Director Paul Kitchin spoke on behalf of the association and emphasized the fact that career colleges are well-poised to help with the city s initiative to make Toronto a destination for both students and businesses. Kitchin applauded the city for organizing the workshop. Today is the start of something that will be really beneficial for us all, he said. Throughout the workshop, representatives from Toronto s career colleges identified a couple of key areas of focus for collaboration, which included Promotion/Advocacy and Business Connections/Newcomer Initiatives. The city formed two working groups based on those areas of focus. Volunteers from the sector will meet over the coming months to develop a strategic plan.
8 8 trios named one of Canada s Best Managed Companies for fourth consecutive year Article courtesy of trios College For the fourth consecutive year, trios College Business Technology Healthcare, has been awarded the Deloitte Best Managed Company Award and this year becomes a Best Managed Gold Standard Winner. trios has been awarded this designation for redefining post-secondary education by listening to student and employer needs and delivering. Stuart Bentley (President) and Frank Gerencser (CEO), who founded the nine-campus Ontario College 22 years ago, could not be more pleased. Becoming a Gold Standard winner is a true testament to the outstanding achievements of our entire staff, Mr. Bentley says. Our business is all about our students and their career success. Our very capable staff allow trios to get to know our student and our employer needs more intimately. With that, we are able to deliver exactly what they want and need from an educational institution, he says. The success of trios rests on creating a structure that allows students to shine. Being a career college, the programs are focused on the exact skills graduates need in the workforce. The programs are shorter in duration which enables students to get back into the workforce quickly. trios also focusses much of their attention on identifying the needs of local employers and building programs to fulfill those needs. The program development process is a key component of our organization, says Bentley. We review market trends, job shortages and work with employers and governing bodies to create programs that are in demand in the marketplace, Bentley commented. Many trios programs have achieved industry accreditation. Accreditations act as a stamp of approval from governing bodies and break down barriers of entry for graduates. The college has implemented strategies that allow better communication with their staff through webinars, its annual company meeting and its Above & Beyond Employee Recognition program. Employees are able to submit suggestions through a tridea program. The ideas are reviewed at monthly executive meetings and the individuals with the top trideas are rewarded. Over the past 21 years, Canada s Best Managed Companies program has recognized the most innovative and Best Managed Companies in Canada. We are delighted to celebrate the accomplishments of trios College Business Technology Healthcare, said John Hughes, National Leader of Canada s Best Managed Companies and Managing Partner, Growth Enterprises, Deloitte. This prestigious national award is sponsored by Deloitte, CIBC, National Post, Queen s School of Business and MacKay CEO Forums. After three consecutive years of maintaining the Best Managed status, companies are named Gold Standard Winners. These winners have demonstrated their commitment to the program and successfully reapplied for the designation.
