Entitlement or Experience : Ten Emerging High School Practices Which May Influence College Students Expectations Stephen E. Lucas, Ph.D. Chair Secondary Education and Foundations

Accountability for Learning Historic: Student and Family Emerging Trend: Teachers and Administrators are accountable for student success rates Others (faculty, staff, support personnel) will be as or more invested in student success Faculty/staff will take initiative when student is struggling Supports will be readily available at multiple points

Instructional Design Historic: Textbook reading, lecture, paper/pencil tests Emerging Trend: Differentiation in curriculum, instruction, and assessment Individualization in curricular choice Varied instructional practices to match students learning styles and preferences Authentic assessment, i.e., beyond paper/pencil tests (e.g., projects, group work, etc.)

Homework Historic: Regularly assigned homework to prepare for class (reading) or practice (lists of problems) Emerging Trend: Less expectation of preparatory homework; higher order homework Out of class work will be in response to what was learned in class, not in preparation Out of class work will be less lower order (fact, recall, practice) and more higher order (creation and evaluation)

Assessment (1) Historic: Infrequent, major, summative tests test and move on Emerging Trend: More frequent, smaller, formative assessments; modification of subsequent instruction More frequent but smaller assessments of learning Use of assessment results by faculty to discover what needs to be re-taught, or taught differently

Assessment (2) Historic: Teach Assess ( F ) Teach New Stuff Emerging Trend: Teach Assess Reteach Reassess (perhaps in a different way) Multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning Multiple ways to demonstrate learning

Tracking Progress Historic: Teacher possessed private gradebook and periodically revealed its contents Emerging Trend: Gradebook is available 24/7 Frequently updated grades Availability of grades/feedback 24/7

Credit Recovery Historic: Earn credits / sink or swim / drop out Emerging Trend: Multiple ways to recover credit (after school, weekends, online) It s never too late to recover and graduate on time Multiple pathways to accumulate credits

Social/Emotional Setting Historic: Departments and academic tracks Emerging Trend: Integrated/interdisciplinary learning, houses, and teams Less/no disciplinary barriers or silos; opportunity to create interdisciplinary learning experiences Infusion of social/emotional aspects into learning less formal and individual, more holistic and social

Academic Supports Historic: Learning skills assumed for most/all Emerging Trend: Learning skills must be taught, sometimes stand-alone, sometimes embedded; support classes in core skill areas Faculty will teach study, learning, library skills as part of content instruction Additional instruction will be available when student struggles, and at little or no cost

Nonacademic Supports Historic: Minimal nonacademic supports Emerging Trend: Social work, mentoring, truancy, family, medical, psychological supports offered Full array of support services even if not directly related to academic achievement will be available at little or no cost, and quickly
