International Baccalaureate Diploma: 30 points in the IB Diploma to include 15 points at Higher level. Candidates with equivalent other qualifications or experience are considered by the Admissions Tutor on an individual basis. 16 Method for Evaluating and Enhancing the Quality and Standards of Teaching and Learning The Programme is managed by the Psychology Board of Study of the Faculty/School of Health and Life Sciences. The Programme Assessment Board (PAB) for Psychology is responsible for considering the progress of all students and making awards in accordance with both the University and course-specific regulations. The assurance of the quality of modules is the responsibility of the Boards of Study which contribute modules to the programme. External Examiners report annually on the programme and their views are considered as part of the annual quality monitoring process (AQM). Details of the AQM process can be found on the Registry s web site. Students are represented on the Student Forum, Board of Study and Faculty/School Board, all of which normally meet two or three times per year. Student views are also sought through module and course evaluation questionnaires. 17 Regulation of Assessment University policy requires the internal moderation of all assessments. External Examiners are appointed for all named University awards. The role of the External Examiner at module level is to ensure that academic standards are in line with national norms for the subject. External Examiners undertake the moderation of examination papers and assessment tasks, and view representative samples of work for the modules for which they have responsibility. At programme level, External Examiners help to ensure fairness in the consideration of student progression and awards. They have the right to comment on all aspects of the assessment system and participate as full members of the assessment boards. The Pass mark for all modules is 40%. This overall module mark may comprise more than one component (e.g. coursework and exam). The individual module descriptors give the precise pass criteria and the weighting of the component marks that contribute to the overall module mark. On Undergraduate programmes, the Honours classification boundaries for First Class, Upper Second Class, Lower Second Class and Third Class are 70%, 60%, 50% and 40% respectively. 12

13 V 9 18 Indicators of Quality and Standards The following are key indicators of quality and standards: The programmes have been designed in accordance with the QAA benchmark statements for Psychology and the British Psychological Society s criteria for accreditation of undergraduate programmes. 23 Part 2: Supporting Information for Undergraduate Psychology programmes 1 Relationship to the National Qualifications Framework, Subject Benchmarks and Professional/Statutory Body requirements The Department of Psychology is committed to presenting a psychology provision that is of high quality and recognised as fulfilling the requirements for nationally recognised qualifications in psychology. To this end the course structures presented here are designed to incorporate nationally recognised descriptors for degree in psychology. Specifically they are designed to: Satisfy the description of a degree as defined by the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland Recognise national expectations of the academic standards for a degree as specified in the Psychology Subject Benchmarks and, Incorporate appropriate psychological content for accredited degrees in psychology as determined by the British Psychological Society. Within the National Qualifications Framework, degrees are awarded to students who can demonstrate the following attributes. i. A systematic understanding of key aspects of their field of study, including acquisition of coherent and detailed knowledge, at least some of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of defined aspects of a discipline. The learning outcomes for Knowledge and Understanding (Part 1 section 12.1) require all students to be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of core areas within psychology. A systematic understanding of these areas is developed through increasing depth of study as the student progresses from level 1 to level 3 modules. At level 3, modules reflect specialist applied areas within psychology, which build on this core understanding and reflect current advances in the discipline. ii. An ability to deploy accurately established techniques of analysis and enquiry within a discipline. All students on the undergraduate degree programme must be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of psychological methods (Part 1 section 12.1 KU2). They must also show competence in selecting, using and reporting appropriate psychological research techniques (Part 1 section 12.2 CS1 and CS2 and section 12.3 PS1). iii. Conceptual understanding that enables the student: - to devise and sustain arguments, and/or to solve problems, using ideas and techniques, some of which are at the forefront of a discipline; and - to describe and comment upon particular aspects of current research, or equivalent advanced scholarship, in the discipline. Conceptual understanding of psychological topics is embedded in the learning outcomes and assessment methods of the undergraduate psychology programmes. Learning outcomes require students to demonstrate ability to engage with psychological debates and concepts (Part KU1), demonstrate competence in the analysis and interpretation of theory and research (Part CS1), use a variety of research techniques (Part CS2) and reason scientifically (Part CS3). They must also be able to analyse, synthesise and summarise both numerical and verbal information (Part TS4) and engage in systematic problem solving (Part TS7). The assessment 23

24 techniques used allow students to demonstrate engagement with both historical and current research in achieving these outcomes. iv. An appreciation of the uncertainty, ambiguity and limits of knowledge. An educational aim of the undergraduate psychology programmes (Part ) is to allow students to develop an understanding of real life applications of psychology and the limitations of applying psychological knowledge beyond the research domain. This is achieved by having modules at levels two and three that focus on applied areas of psychology. v. the ability to manage their own learning, and to make use of scholarly reviews and primary sources (eg refereed research articles and/or original materials appropriate to the discipline). Students are expected to acquire a range of transferable skills (Part ) through engagement with the undergraduate psychology programmes. These include the ability to manage their time and workloads and IT skills including retrieval of scholarly material (Part PS4). The Psychology Subject Benchmarks (07) and the Accreditation through partnership handbook of the British Psychological Society (10) set out the specific expectations for the standards and content of an accredited Honours degree (or joint degree) in psychology. The current BPS guidelines closely mirror the statements from the Subject Benchmarks. Programmes are required to equip psychology graduates with the following subject-specific skills: Ability to apply multiple perspectives to psychological issues, recognising that psychology involves a range of research methods, theories, evidence and applications; Ability to integrate ideas and findings across the multiple perspectives in psychology and to recognise distinctive psychological approaches to relevant issues; Ability to identify and evaluate general patterns in behaviour, psychological functioning and experience; Ability to understand and investigate the role of brain function in all human behaviour and experience; Ability to generate and explore hypotheses and research questions; Ability to carry out empirical studies involving a variety of methods of data collection, including experiments, observation, psychometric tests, questionnaires, interviews and field studies; Ability to analyse data using both quantitative and qualitative methods; Ability to present and evaluate research findings; Ability to employ evidence-based reasoning and examining practical, theoretical and ethical issues associated with the use of different methodologies, paradigms and methods of analysis in psychology; and Ability to use a variety of psychological tools, including specialist software, laboratory equipment and psychometric instruments. To achieve these skills programmes must deliver a curriculum that includes Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Individual Differences, Social Psychology, Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology, Research Methods and an Empirical Project. With the exception of Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology (which may be delivered at any level or through embedding across modules) and the Empirical Project (which must be at level 3) all of the curriculum must be at level 2 or 3. The psychology programmes are designed to meet these skill and content requirements for all students by them taking a common core set of modules at each level. The modules and how they align to the BPS curriculum requirements are outlined in Part 1 section 23. All modules at levels 1 and 2 are mandatory requiring students to engage with the broad gamut of psychological research theory and skills required for BPS accreditation. At level 3 students can choose to focus their study on particular areas of interest from within applied areas of psychology and must demonstrate their ability to integrate and apply their knowledge and understanding of basic theory and methodology in their own independent research. 24

25 The programmes of study therefore cover the key areas of psychology identified for attaining eligibility for GBC but also allow flexibility of choice for students keen to explore their areas of particular interest. 2 Teaching and Learning Strategy A broad range of teaching and learning strategies is utilised to develop student skills as identified in the learning outcomes stated in the Programme Specification. The strategies employed reflect the aims and learning outcomes of each of the undergraduate psychology programmes with teaching methods selected to be appropriate for the content and aims of each module on that programme. Students gain knowledge and develop critical and evaluative skills through a structured series of lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratories, workshops and independent learning activities. They develop critical awareness through small group discussions following engagement with primary materials. They are also directed to lecture related resource materials (such as web resources and research databases) and essential and additional reading. All modules are supported on-line by CUOnline. The Psychology Department has used CUOnline extensively to support student learning, through the provision of lecture notes, and other content related material and links. All students on a course involving psychology also have access to a general course web where they can engage in discussion that is not related to a specific module. Students develop empirical research skills through practical experience in research methods workshops. These workshops are activity based, involving designing studies, collection of data and data analysis. Much of the work is done in small groups with supervisory guidance from a tutor, and may involve specialist equipment as well as computer generated exercises. Through structured problem-solving exercises, students practise skills of data collection, synthesis, analysis, interpretation and scientific report writing. Several modules employ an active student-led learning approach to encourage students to develop research skills in an applied context. Generic transferable skills are embedded within teaching on the modules. In particular research methods workshops at levels 1 and 2 encourage students to engage with skills such as group work, report writing, problem solving, and use of IT, while the project element of level 3 allows students to demonstrate the ability to work independently. Independence is fostered progressively at each level, as students conduct, in an increasingly independent context, research projects, which expand in both breadth and depth. Course material is informed by current research in each of the taught areas of psychology, particularly for the specialist third level options, which reflect the research and academic interests of the tutors involved. 3 Assessment Strategy The assessment strategy for Psychology is designed to take account of module learning outcomes and informed by the University regulations and guidelines for assessment, Faculty policies and national guidelines (in particular, the Psychology benchmark statements and British Psychological Society curriculum requirements). A broad range of assessment techniques is used to facilitate the performance of students. Through their engagement with different modules and assessment patterns students are required to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in a variety of ways. The assessment pattern has been designed to ensure diversity and balance alongside the need for a credible measure of the achievement of learning outcomes. The assessment diet thus includes e.g. essays, literature reviews, practical reports, poster presentations, multiple-choice tests, traditional examinations and independent research project. Learning outcomes are clearly linked to assessment in each of the module descriptors to ensure that students meet the threshold requirements given in the Psychology Benchmark Statements. Module guides are given to students for each module and these clearly state the learning outcomes of the module and the requirements for assessment. The Psychology Department has developed clear assessment criteria for each of the assessment types employed and these are presented to students in student handbooks. The assessment criteria align to those used across the Faculty. As well as these generic assessment schemes, each module leader also 25

26 produces advice for students, and specific marking guidelines for co-markers, detailing the type of content to be expected in an answer. These are used to further promote equity of marking. Moderation of assessment is carried out for all examinations and coursework following University and Faculty policies. External Examiners for each module are required to comment on the appropriateness of the marking and standards achieved. Tutor feedback is provided on all assessed coursework in the form of standard assessment front sheets with sections relevant to the published assessment criteria. Written comments are provided on each aspect of the work considered in marking with guidance on ways of improving similar future work. Policies for the submission of late work, queries about marks awarded and other assessment regulations are clearly stated in the Student Handbook. The assessment load through the year is coordinated across modules by the Associate Head (Academic). As far as possible assessments are spread throughout the year to avoid excessive student workloads at any one time. Assessment for all modules is in line with Faculty policy on parity of student effort across modules, which specifies the appropriate number of units of assessment to be applied to modules at each level. All coursework and examinations are marked anonymously, with the exception of the final year project where the uniqueness of the report precludes this. Final year independent research projects are independently double-marked. 4 Programme/Course Management The management of the course is shared between the following role-holders and committees/boards: 1. Head of Department overall responsibility for the management of all courses within the psychology programme. 2. Associate Head(s) (Academic) overall responsibility for quality assurance and enhancement across all courses 3. Associate Head (Development) overall responsibility for admissions, marketing and recruitment. 4. Course Director responsible for the overall management of the course, the coherence of the award and the quality of the student experience. 5. Year tutors responsible for day-to-day administration of the courses at each stage. 6. Module Leaders responsible for the management and delivery of individual modules, and for the monitoring and assessment of student achievement. 7. Academic and Personal Tutors each student will be assigned to an Academic and Personal Tutor who is responsible for monitoring the academic progress of their tutees as well as facilitating access to appropriate support mechanisms. 8. Admissions Tutor responsible for the recruitment and admission of appropriately qualified applicants and liaising with the Admissions Unit. 9. Course Administrator the course is supported by the Course Administrator in the Department of Psychology who also services the assessment boards. 10. Assessment Boards a Subject Assessment Board and a Programme Assessment Board is responsible for considering the progress of students at module and course level and ultimately making awards in accordance with the university undergraduate regulations. 11. Board of Studies the course is managed by the Psychology Board of Studies which receives a report from the Course Director each term. Quality assurance in relation to modules and the course is managed by the Board, which reports to the Faculty Board. 12. Student Forum students will be consulted about their experience on modules and the course via online discussion groups and a formal student forum. 13. Module and Course Evaluation students will be asked to complete an evaluation of all modules and the course on an annual basis and their feedback will inform the content of 26
