1 CIS : Management Information Systems Spring 2011 Professor: Dr. Jia Shen Web: jiashen@rider.edu Course Site: Office Hours: Mon/Wed: 1:30PM-3:00 PM ( & In office) Introduction The world of business continues to change at an incredible pace right before our eyes. As we head deeper into the digital age, ubiquitous information access, integration, and sharing become the norm. Knowledge becomes the most valuable asset. The effective creation, management, and utilization of knowledge will dictate success. The purpose of this course is to prepare you for this dynamic business environment by increasing your understanding of IT-enabled global change. Course Objectives This senior-level capstone course has the following objectives: 1. Understand the use of information technology in businesses for competitive advantage. In particular, understand the strategic advantage provided by the following types of systems: E-Commerce Enterprise Systems Database and Knowledge Management Systems Mobile and Pervasive Systems Social Networking systems 2. Explain how enterprise systems facilitate organizational effectiveness. 3. Understand the impact of information technologies in creating a new global communication platform. 4. Discuss a variety of ethical and privacy issues associated with the use of information technologies. 5. Collaborate with classmates in team assignments. Appreciate different points of view. 1
2 Resources The following resources are required for this course: Rider University Blackboard User ID and Password, and access to the Internet One Required book Introduction to Information Systems: Enabling and Transforming Business 3 rd Edition Rainer & Cegielski Publisher: John Wiley & Sons 2011 Note: There are four ISBNs associated with the 3 rd edition of the textbook: Bound text only Bound text with WileyPlus code Loose-leaf-binder version of the text Loose-leaf-binder version of text with WileyPlus code The Rider bookstore has the bound text only version without WileyPlus code in stock (ISBN: ). WileyPlus is an interactive website that provides you with more in-depth resources for each chapter of the textbook, and it is optional in our class. Whichever version of the textbook you choose from the four above, you are required to obtain a copy of the textbook before the course starts. Additional papers may be distributed on Blackboard throughout the semester. Class Format and Communication Blackboard (Bb) is the main platform for all of the activities in the course. I will use Blackboard throughout the course to post course materials, assignments, discussion questions, and grades. The exams will also be conducted via Blackboard. Classes will consist of online discussions on assigned readings, videos, hands-on activities, and reading of textbook chapters. 2
3 Before the class begins, you are expected to: Log into the course: You will be given access to your course prior to the course start date. Make sure you can log into the course without any problems. Introduce yourself: Post an introductory message in the Welcome and Introductions forum on Blackboard Discussion Board. See Blackboard for details on information to include in the your introductory message. During each week of class, you are expected to: Read assigned textbook chapters and additional class readings In the weekly online discussions, post your answers to the discussion questions in the online forum, and reply to at least two other students answers in the discussion forum. Periodically during class: Check on your progress. Throughout the course, I will post your grades on weekly discussions and assignments using the Grade book function on Blackboard (Course Tools ->My Grades). Exams grades will also be posted in the Blackboard. You should check your grade and other information such as the class average, and assess your progress in class. You should be proactive and logon to Blackboard everyday to keep up with the pace of the course. In addition, your Rider account is your address for all official communications for this course. You are expected to check Blackboard and your Rider account on a frequent and consistent basis in order to stay current with course-related information. Documents should be shared using MS Word or an RTF format, unless another format is specified by the professor. Consistent and well-planned participation are critical to your grade for this online course. Assessment Methods The table below shows the grading components, type, and weights. 4 Exam 1-3 will be based on assigned class readings and online discussions. All exams will be conducted online using the exam function of Blackboard. discussions provide a forum for students to discuss current IT issues related to the assigned class readings, and exchanges thoughts and learn from fellow students. Students will read assigned chapters or articles, provide answers to discussion questions, and read and respond to other students comments. Articles we will discuss include selected recent case studies in MIS. The course project will involve researching on the latest topics in MIS, and report writing. Sample topics include the business value of virtual environments, the impact of Web 2.0 technologies in E-commerce, and pervasive and ubiquitous computing. Details of the assignments and the exams will be announced on course Blackboard. Class Policies Assignments, Exams, and Attendance: Individual assignments that are turned in after the expected due date will receive 10 points deduction for each day of lateness up to 40 points. No submission will be accepted four days past the due date, and the assignment will receive a grade of 0 points. Students who due to exceptional circumstances find themselves unable to complete assignments by the due date must contact me by or in person IN ADVANCE OF THE DUE DATE to negotiate what will be done. We will try to work something out. An exam may be made up only with a valid excuse. Unexcused absences in online participation will affect your weekly online discussion grade, and may affect your final course grade at my discretion. Please contact me in advance of planned absences to be sure you are not penalized because of irregular online attendance. Academic Dishonesty (From Rider University's "The Source") Academic dishonesty includes any unauthorized collaboration or misrepresentation in the submission of academic work. In all written work, whether in class or out of class, the student s name on the work is considered to be a statement that the work is his or hers alone, except as otherwise indicated. Students are expected to provide proper citations for the statements and ideas of others whether submitted word for word or paraphrased. Failure to provide proper citations will be considered plagiarism and offenders will be subject to the charge of plagiarism specified in the statement of regulations. Similarly, students are expected to adhere to all regulations pertaining to examination conduct. These regulations are designed to insure that the work submitted by the student on examinations is an honest representation of that student s effort and that it does not involve unauthorized collaboration, unauthorized use of notes during the exam, or unauthorized access to prior information about the examination. 4
