3 RADICATI MARKET QUADRANTS EXPLAINED Radicati Market Quadrants are designed to illustrate how individual vendors fit within specific technology markets at any given point in time. All Radicati Market Quadrants are composed of four sections, as shown in the example quadrant (Figure 1). 1. Specialists This group is made up of two types of companies: a. Emerging players that are still very new to the industry and have not yet built up much of an installed base. These companies are still developing their strategy and technology. b. Established vendors that offer a niche product. 2. Trail Blazers These vendors offer cutting edge technology, but have not yet built up a large customer base. With effective marketing and better awareness, these companies hold the power to dethrone the current market leaders. Trail blazers often shape the future of technology with their innovations and new product designs. 3. Top Players These are the current leaders of the market, with products that have built up large customer bases. Vendors do not become top players overnight. Most of the companies in this quadrant were first specialists or trail blazers (some were both). As companies reach this stage, they must fight complacency and continue product innovation, or else they will be replaced by the next generation of trail blazers. 4. Mature Players These vendors have large, mature installed bases of customers, but no longer set the pace for the rest of the industry. These vendors are no longer considered movers and shakers as they once were. a. In some cases, this is by design. 4 b. In other cases, a vendor may simply become complacent as a top vendor and be out-developed by hungrier trail blazers and other top players. c. Companies in this stage either find new life and revive their R&D, moving back into the top players segment, or else they slowly fade away as legacy technology. Figure 1, below, shows a sample Radicati Market Quadrant. As a vendor continues to develop its product, it will move horizontally along the x axis. As market share changes, vendors move vertically along the y axis. It is common for vendors to move between quadrants over the life of a product, as their products improve and market requirements evolve. Service providers deploying messaging platforms include: Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Telecommunication Providers (i.e. Telcos), Web Hosting Providers, Cloud Business Providers, and Application Service Providers (ASPs). Vendors in this segment include: Atmail, Axigen Messsaging, CommuniGate Systems, Critical Path (CP), IceWarp, Ipswitch, Microsoft, Openwave Messaging, Open-Xchange, Oracle, Rockliffe, Zimbra, and others. Many Messaging Platforms vendors develop solutions that are fit for both the Enterprise and Service Provider segments. However, this market quadrant focuses only on the part of their business that deals with supplying messaging platforms to service providers. Consumer and business-oriented service provider messaging platforms have evolved from offering basic functionality to fully-featured unified communications and social platforms. Messaging Platforms for Service Providers vendors must continually meet the ever-growing demand for more advanced capabilities. In keeping pace with customers expectations, Messaging Platforms have become a centralized hub for users, allowing them to access a wide range of other networks and features, in addition to . These advanced features typically include universal mobile access, fully-featured web clients, social networking integration, instant messaging (IM), voice and video functionality, and more. In 2013, the worldwide revenue for the Messaging Platforms for Service Providers segment is over $1.1 billion. 7 EVALUATION CRITERIA Messaging Platforms for Service Providers vendors are positioned in the quadrant, according to two criteria: Market Share and Functionality. Market Share is based on the installed base published in our Messaging Platforms Market, report. The provider with the largest installed base has a market share of 1, the one with the second largest installed base has a market share of 2, etc. In order for Messaging Platforms for Service Providers vendors to be positioned in the Top Player or Mature quadrants, they need to have a market share of 1 to 4. Messaging Platforms for Service Providers with smaller installed bases are positioned either in the Trail Blazer or Specialist quadrants. Functionality we assess each Messaging Platform for Service Providers solution based on a number of key differentiation criteria. In order for an Platforms for Service Providers vendor to be on the right side of the quadrant (Top Player or Trail Blazer), their solution should possess the following capabilities: Scalability service providers expect to be able to accommodate a growing number of user seats, while simultaneously maintaining low costs. As a result, vendors in this segment must offer highly scalable platforms that can maintain up to millions of user seats. Service providers should take into consideration the two primary components of scalability: scaling up and scaling out. Scaling up, or vertical scaling, is a platform s ability to maximize efficiency to house as many users as possible on a single server. Scaling out, or horizontal scaling, is a platform s ability to easily integrate additional servers with existing ones to increase the platform s capacity for more user seats. Reliability service providers must offer uninterrupted service to subscribers with minimal downtime. Messaging Platforms for Service Providers vendors must therefore offer platforms with robust high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) features. All Messaging Platforms for Service Providers are expected to offer these as standard features to ensure that a service remains uninterrupted and, in the event of a system failure or update, experiences as little downtime as Copyright November 2013 The Radicati Group, Inc. 8 possible. Service providers also expect to be able to quickly and easily access tools that provide insight on the condition of their servers to avoid errors that may lead to system failures. Multi-Tenancy Multi-tenancy allows service providers to manage a large number of subscribers on a single server. This greatly cuts costs by allowing service providers to utilize less servers, while simultaneously maintaining a larger number of subscriber seats on a single server. Multi-tenancy also allows service providers to avoid costly hardware overhead, as well as reduces risks associated with maintaining a greater number of servers. Lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) enables service providers to offer services to customers at a lower price. Mobile Device Access Today, mobile devices are widely used by both business and consumer users. Service providers expect to offer subscribers access to their services from mobile devices, typically via Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (EAS). In addition, increased mobile device usage has led users to expect a consistent messaging experience across their devices. Vendors must now offer service providers fully optimized and touch-capable mobile interfaces for the latest smartphone and tablet devices. Social Networking Integration Communication via social networks has become increasingly popular among business and consumer users. As a result, vendors in this segment must allow for rich integration with popular social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others, directly from the Messaging Platform s interface. This in turn allows subscribers to quickly access their contacts on a range of social networks from a centralized interface. Unified Communications (UC) Service providers must keep pace with their subscribers ever-growing demand for more functionality. Both business and consumer users now utilize alternative communication channels in addition to , such as IM and video chat. The instantaneous nature of these forms of communication has shaped the way that users expect to communicate today, which has resulted in messaging platforms offering a full suite of UC functionality, which includes voice and video functionality, such as VoIP, video conferencing, click-to-call, and more. 9 Instant Messaging (IM) Many Messaging Platforms for Service Providers offer an IM client as part of their package, or as an optional solution that can be integrated with the platform. Like many other advanced features in messaging platforms, these IM solutions can typically be accessed directly from a centralized user interface. Additional Monetization Opportunities Messaging Platforms for Service Providers offer service provider customers the opportunity to gain additional revenues from their subscribers, which is typically achieved via open APIs. With open APIs, service providers can create and integrate their own premium services that extend the platform s functionality. In addition, a Messaging Platform may also allow service providers to utilize advertisement space on its interface for additional revenue. Subscriber Features Service providers must keep pace with the ever-growing demand for more features by offering a wide range of advanced features that go beyond basic services. These features include: o Additional Storage o Security (Anti-Virus and Spam Filtering Protection) o Archiving and Compliance o Groupware (Shared Calendaring, Shared Contacts, and other Personal Productivity Tools) o Voice and Video Chat Note: On occasion, we may put a vendor on the right side of the quadrant by giving them a higher than typical Functionality Score, even if they are missing one or two of the features mentioned above, if we feel that other aspects of their solution are particularly unique and innovative. 11 KEY MARKET QUADRANT TRENDS Oracle, Critical Path, and Openwave Messaging rank as Top Players in the Messaging Platforms for Service Providers market. o Oracle currently has the largest installed base in this segment with its Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite. The platform offers high reliability and scalable services for tier 1 and 2 providers. In addition, Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite features a wide range of functionality, including robust mobile device access, IM, voice and video, and many other features. The platform also allows service provider customers to utilize advertisement space on its Convergence interface for additional monetization opportunities. o Critical Path (CP) offers its feature rich CP Messaging platform, as well as CP Security, which extends robust security features, and can be purchased as a standalone or integrated with CP Messaging. Over the past year, CP Messaging has been updated to include a touch-based mobile device interface, allowing for a streamlined experience across the latest smartphone and tablet devices. In addition, Critical Path offers customers a wide range of deployment options, including public and private cloud, on-premises software, and turnkey appliances. o Openwave Messaging released version 9.0 of its Universal Messaging Suite in September The latest version of the platform supports fully scalable and unlimited mailboxes, more flexible deployment options, and much more. Mx Messaging, the core of the platform, includes a unified mailbox for , SMS, MMS, and voic . In addition, the platform allows customers to develop and integrate their own value-added services to offer to subscribers via open APIs. Microsoft, Zimbra, and Open-Xchange rank as Trail Blazers. As these companies build momentum and grow their installed base, they are likely to move into the Top Player quadrant. o Microsoft focuses entirely on business-oriented service providers with its Microsoft Exchange Server. Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 was released in late 2012, and includes a number of new features, including a less complex architecture, improvements to anywhere access, data loss prevention (DLP), and more. Recently, Microsoft has discontinued service packs for the platform in favor of cumulative updates (CU), which deliver predetermined, more significant updates every quarter. o Zimbra was acquired by Telligent in 2013, however, the vendor continues to offer its Zimbra Collaboration Server to customers. The release of the next major update to the platform, Zimbra Collaboration 8.5, has not been affected by the Telligent acquisition, and promises to deliver an always on experience, a new touch-based mobile client, and more. Future releases of the platform will offer a product suite to customers, which will package both Zimbra s messaging technology with Telligent s social tools. o Open-Xchange offers the OX App Suite, which comprises messaging and collaboration tools, mobile access, and productivity tools into a single package. The platform is built on a modular design, allowing service providers to choose which components best fit their market needs. In future versions, Open-Xchange plans to add a built-in IM solution, as well as spreadsheet and presentation functionality to its productivity toolset. IceWarp, Atmail, Axigen Messaging, Rockliffe, and Ipswitch are in the Specialist quadrant. These messaging platform vendors play primarily in the lower end of the market and typically offer their platforms to tier 3 and tier 4 service providers. We expect these players to gain more traction as small service providers continue to migrate away from freeware platforms. o IceWarp s platform offers service providers a complete set of messaging and collaboration tools, as well as robust security features. The next version of the platform is due by the end of 2013, and will allow users to create and edit documents directly from the webmail interface. o Atmail s Server platform includes rich UC capabilities via Atmail UC, which allows for voice calls and SMS messaging through the Atmail Webmail Client. o Axigen Messaging offers a scalable platform to service providers. The platform provides basic messaging and collaboration functionality, and extends a desktop-like experience across all devices via its WebMail interface. Axigen is also packaged with multiple security technologies. o Rockliffe s MailSite Fusion is a scalable platform that provides customers with standard messaging functionality, as well as an enterprise-grade IM solution called AstraChat. The latest version of the platform adds Microsoft Outlook 2013 synchronization, IMAP IDLE, and more. o Ipswitch s IMail Server offers robust security features, which includes multilayered protection from malware. In addition, the platform includes a proprietary IM solution as part of its package. CommuniGate Systems ranks as a Mature Player. This company has a large installed base, but in recent years has shifted its focus away from this market space, choosing instead to pursue other market opportunities. o CommuniGate Systems delivers a wide range of messaging, UC, and groupware features to tier 2 and 3 service providers. CommuniGate Pro is available on virtually any platform, and includes Pronto!, a robust web client that utilizes webrtc to enable voice and video functionality. 14 MESSAGING PLATFORMS FOR SERVICE PROVIDERS - VENDOR ANALYSIS TOP PLAYERS ORACLE 500 Oracle Parkway Redwood Shores, CA Founded in 1977, Oracle offers hardware and software that works together in the cloud and in the data center, from servers and storage, to database and middleware, and through applications. Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite is a highly scalable and cloud-ready portfolio of communication and collaboration capabilities with full support for multi-tenancy. The platform is architected to provide a very high mean time between failures. Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite comprises the Oracle Communications Messaging Server, which supports POP, IMAP, SMTP, and LDAP, includes anti-virus, spam filtering, and authentication technologies for protection against malware, support for legal interception, and supports personal, public and shared folders. The platform is packaged with Convergence, a Web 2.0 client with integrated voice, video, , SMS, calendar, address book, and IM, as well as access to social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter. Convergence provides enhanced advertising support that offers service providers additional monetization opportunities. The platform also offers an XMPP-based secure IM and presence awareness platform integrated within Convergence, a SyncML-based service for mobile device access, and an Outlook Connector that allows users to access the Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite services from Microsoft Outlook Users are also given access to a server-based indexing and search engine that is able to perform fast, comprehensive searches of message bodies and attachments. 15 KEY STRENGTHS: The Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite allows for optimized, simple, and secure cloud deployment where customers can fully customize its many components to best fit their individual needs. Customers can choose to deploy a wide range of features, including instant messaging, groupware features, security, and more. Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite can easily integrate components from third-party vendors, offering customers greater flexibility to customize the platform to meet their individual requirements. Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite provides a broad set of APIs, that enable service providers to develop and integrate their own assets and increases their monetization opportunities. Convergence allows users to access a complete unified communications experience, including , voice, video, SMS, IM, and more within a single interface. Convergence offers service providers additional monetization opportunities via enhanced advertising support. KEY WEAKNESSES: Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite cannot be deployed on Microsoft Windows environments. Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite s Outlook Connector does not currently allow users to connect with Microsoft Outlook However, this feature is in development. While Oracle Communications Unified Communications Suite supports SyncML, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync is not included in its package. 16 CRITICAL PATH (CP) 2655 Campus Drive, Suite 250 San Mateo, California Founded in 1997, Critical Path (CP) is a global provider of Messaging, Security, and Unified Communications that can be deployed via public or private cloud, as software behind the firewall, or as turnkey appliances. The CP Portfolio is deployable on both Linux and Unix, and includes POP3, IMAP, and Mac OS X client access. The platform includes CP Messaging, which delivers , calendar, and address book functionality integrated with a middleware connector framework to provide access to unified communications capabilities, including voic , instant-messaging, video-conferencing, social networking integration, and portal services. Two new user interfaces provide a much richer, touch-friendly experience on both desktop and smartphone devices. CP Messaging allows users to send s up to 2 GB in size, supports carddav and caldav, and provides advanced inbox and mail folders search functionality. Additional capabilities include storage optimization technology via application-level compression and tiering policies. CP Security is CP s messaging security solution, which can be fully integrated into CP Messaging, or purchased as a standalone solution. The solution includes geo-ip database, enhanced rules based traffic management, multi-scan anti-spam, anti-virus, anti-malware, handling of outbound spam, IP reputation protection, and a SIEVE-based policy engine. CP Security leverages technologies from Commtouch, Kaspersky, and Sophos. In addition, CP Security includes a built-in archiving solution. For administration, CP includes a cluster management console application. CP Security includes a complete archiving solution, which provides users with additional data security and advanced search functionality of archived s. CP s software suite provides support for multiple mobility options, including Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), OMA DS (syncml), IMAP IDLE, ical, caldav, carddav, and mobile web for smartphone, tablet, and feature phone devices. KEY WEAKNESSES: The CP platform deployment on Microsoft Windows server platforms is limited to the , directory, and Webtop components. The CP messaging platform is highly customizable to fit diverse service provider requirements, however this can be somewhat confusing to providers with fairly basic needs. 18 OPENWAVE MESSAGING INC Seaport Boulevard, Suite 400 Redwood City, CA USA Openwave Messaging was founded in May 2012 after Marlin Equity Partners acquired the assets of Openwave Systems. Openwave Messaging is a global provider of messaging software solutions that deliver , voice, video, security, and data communications solutions for industry-leading communications service providers worldwide. The Universal Messaging Suite version 9.0, released in September 2013, supports fully scalable and unlimited mailboxes, flexible storage options, Open APIs, improved management of messaging service costs, and more. This version also offers hosted and hybrid cloud models for greater flexibility. Mx Messaging is the foundation of the platform, and offers a unified mailbox for , SMS, MMS, mobile messaging, and voic . Users can also access Mx Messaging via the App Suite or Rich Mail UI, Web 2.0 interfaces that support single sign-on (SSO), Microsoft Outlook synchronization, and third-party applications. Mx Messaging is also optimized for smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices. The platform supports open APIs, called mos. Security features include Edge Gx, a proprietary security solution, as well as Cloudmark, Commtouch, and McAfee technologies. The platform also includes LDAP and a Subscriber User Repository to assist service providers in managing an increase in traffic. Additional services include Hosting and Managed Services, Professional Services, and support, offering installation and deployment, training, solutions integration, and more. In July 2013, Openwave Messaging announced the Network Message Store, a scalable, stateless message store that runs seamlessly on commodity hardware, and delivers % availability, geo-redundancy and integration with scale-out storage architectures. 19 The Universal Messaging Suite offers built-in Active/Active Geo-redundancy, allowing simultaneous access to a mailbox from multiple data centers. This enables service providers to offer business continuity services without the need for expensive HA licenses. Mx Messaging has been optimized for use on nearly all smartphone devices and tablets, allowing for an improved experience across all mobile devices. Both the App Suite and Rich Mail user interface options allow users to access different social media communities simultaneously, which enables cross-platform communications using a single interface and login. The Universal Messaging Suite includes open APIs provided by the mos layer, which enable easy integration and access to a number of components and data stores.
