Our over 300 vounteers provide suppementa support to the medica center staff at both the main hospita and the six sateite community-based cinics. So contact the Vountary Office and come join the over 300 vounteers and experience the rewards of vounteering for our nation s heroes! 12 How to Appy The VounTary Wheechair Bus committee coected donations totaing $127, to purchase a new Activity Wheechair Bus to repace the current 1993 Buebird bus. This bus is used to transport patients to off-station events that are organized by the Vountary Service Staff and Veteran Service Organizations. The new bus wi be on the road by ate August! 2 Donations, Donations, Donations... 2 Vounteers Nancy and Ear Resser organizing some of the many generous donations given by oca community organizations. Loca Veteran Service Organizations fied over 250 Christmas bags with comfort items. The bags were then distributed to patients by Santa, vounteers and Vountary staff. Operation God Bess America rides again! Over 200 motorcyces participated in the annua ride to the Lebanon VA Medica Center donating over $8,000 to the Veterans. Dana and Chris gady accepting a generous donation from a oca organization! Nancy Resser provides a presentation about the baby program started for pregnant or nursing mothers at the quartery VA Vountary Service meeting. Lebanon Quiters Guid donated 58 quits to the Hospice unit. Quits ike this one decorate the Veteran s bed upon admission to the Hospice unit. Vountary Service deveoped a aptop oaner program for inpatient Veterans. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiiary, American Legion Auxiiary, and the Sient City Stockers Car Show Committee donated a tota of 8 aptops for the patients to use whie in the hospita. Pau Nace getting a tour of a Chinook heicopter at Fort Indiantown Gap. IT S ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS Grace Bachman, ong-time vounteer, visits with ong-time friend Janet Cochran. Their friendship was deveoped right here at the VA! James van Riemsdyk, a forward for the Phiadephia Fyers hockey team, sponsored a visit for six Veterans from the Lebanon VA Medica Center to see the Fyers take on the Chicago Backhawks in January, Mr. van Riemsdyk provided a mea for the Veterans inside his MVP room and aso arranged for the Veterans to sit in box seats to watch the game. Every February, the Nationa Saute to Hospitaized Veterans week-ong program is hed to pay tribute and express appreciation to Veterans, to increase community awareness of the roe of the VA medica center, and to encourage citizens to visit hospitaized Veterans and to become invoved as vounteers. This year s guests incuded Ms. Pennsyvania, Cedar Crest High Schoo Facon mascot and youth athetes, and Lebanon Vaey Coege Dutchman mascot and their ice hockey team.

4 324 adut vounteers and 22 youths worked 70,190 hours between June 1, 2011 and May 31, 2012! Honored Vounteers heen meiser has Been a devoted VounTeer at the Lebanon VA for many years giving over 4,000 hours of service to the Veterans. She was recognized with a Jefferson Award in November 2011 from WGAL 8. 4 Heen Meiser aong with the Vountary Staff receiving her Jefferson Award. The Va VounTary service executive committee awarded five Youth Vounteer Schoarships. A tota of $1000 was distributed among the five recipients. The winners were: Jennifer Kindt, attending Lebanon Vaey Coege, Andrew Siscaretti, attending Lebanon Vaey Coege, This Wheechair Bus Committee won a siver Hearts of Exceence Award ocay at the Lebanon VA and aso a siver meda at the Phiadephia Executive Board Luncheon for their work in raising enough money to purchase a new bus for the Veterans. 5 Vounteer Banquet The annua VounTeer BanqueT was hed on Apri 13, 2012 at Marabee s Restaurant in Lebanon. The theme this year was Ceebrating Peope in Action. 6 6 POW/MIA Who are Former PRISONERS of War? Since Word War I, more than 142,000 Americans, incuding 85 women, have been captured and interned as POWs. Not incuded in this figure are neary 93,000 Americans who were ost or never recovered. Ony one-fifth of America s former POWs since Word War I are sti iving (about 22,641). More than 90% of iving former POWs were captured and interned during Word War II. About 15,367 former POWs are in receipt of compensation for service-connected injuries, diseases, or inesses. definition of a Former PRISONER OF WAR Period of War A former POW is a Veteran who, whie on active duty in the miitary, air, or nava service, was forciby detained or interned in the ine of duty by an enemy government or its agents or a hostie force during a period of war. Periods of war incude: Word War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and service since August 2, Peacetime-Comparabe to Wartime - A former POW aso incudes a Veteran who, whie on active duty during peacetime, was forciby detained or interned by a foreign government or its agents or a hostie force, if the circumstances of the internment were comparabe to wartime internment (for exampe: Iran). Donations provide the suppementa resources necessary to support an assortment of programs and services for Veterans, such as transportation, socia services, recreationa programs and activities, odging, rehab equipment, homeess needs, comfort items, hoiday gifts, phone cards, canteen coupon books, and other assistance as needed.
