2 2014 Annual Scientific Session NC Chapter, American College of Physicians Activity Description and target audience This meeting is designed for general internists, subspecialty internists, family physicians, fellows in subspecialty training, allied health practitioners, residents, and medical students interested in internal medicine. The purpose is to improve diagnosis and treatment skills and provide updates on new developments in the health care climate in North Carolina. This is the only forum for internal medicine physicians in the state to convene, confer with colleagues, and update knowledge and skills! Educational Objectives At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to: Apply updated knowledge of antibiotic selection and proper duration of treatment for infectious diseases and inpatient management of diabetes mellitus to clinical practice; Improve clinical practice by incorporating major new developments in High Value Care and the health maintenance exam; Understand recent advances in geriatrics; Diagnose and manage treatment of lung cancer; Increase confidence in performing evidence-based assessment in the diagnosis and management of depression. Accreditation The American College of Physicians (ACP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Credit The American College of Physicians designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 3 2014 Annual Scientific Session Meeting details Meeting Highlights Program Chair Suzanne Kraemer, MD, MS, FACP, has assembled an outstanding faculty who will address current topics of interest. Other meeting features for your enjoyment include the Associates Poster Competition (go to for details); the Governor s Awards Dinner, at which this year s Laureate Award winner will be recognized; the Associates Cocktail Hour; special interest group lunch roundtables; chief resident presentations; the Chapter business meeting and Town Hall meeting. Finally, an exhibit area will be available presenting products and services of interest to physicians and their practices. The attire is business casual for the meeting and social events NC Laureate Awardee: Lee R. Berkowitz, MD, FACP The NC,ACP is pleased to honor the 2014 Laureate Award recipient, Lee R. Berkowitz, MD, FACP, at the Governor s Awards Dinner Friday night, February 28. The Laureate Award is designed to honor those who have demonstrated, by their example and conduct, an abiding commitment to excellence in medical care, education, research, and service to their community, their chapter, and ACP. Dr. Berkowitz is the Eunice Bernhard Distinguished Professor and Associate Chair of Education in the Department of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Berkowitz completed the MD degree at the Ohio State University College of Medicine, followed by residency and chief residency in the Department of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He did fellowship training in hematology at Washington University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Berkowitz s academic career has centered on his role as residency program director at UNC, a position he continues to hold. He has also served as president of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine and chair of the test writing committee of the American College of Physicians in-training examination. He currently is chair of the Alliance for Academic Medicine s task force on education redesign of graduate medical education. Meeting Registration The registration fee for ACP member physicians is $175. The fee for non-member physicians is $250, and for allied health professionals the fee is $125-$150. Residents and medical students may attend free of charge. Registration fees include the two days of meeting sessions, the Friday evening reception, continental breakfast, lunch and breaks, as well as the CME certificate and course syllabus. You may register securely online at or complete the form in this brochure and return it via fax or mail prior to Friday, January 31. After January 31, registration fees will increase. Deadline / Registration Cancellation Please note that refunds of registration fees will not be made after Friday, February 21. Refunds, less $25, will be made for cancellations received prior to that date.
