2 DISSERTATION Perceptions of Power in Brands and an Investigation into Market Dominance Advisor: Carlos J. Torelli Committee: Deborah Roedder John, Barbara Loken, Mark Snyder Power is a commonly used construct in psychology but has yet to be applied to brands. This is somewhat surprising given that power is pervasive in social psychology research and the terms powerful brands are regularly used by business publications. My research attempts to not only understand the dimensions by which consumers perceive power in brands but also the nuances associated with a brand possessing or lacking power, specifically delving into the dimension of market dominance. Essay 1: A Typology of Power in Brands Past research has adapted human constructs such as personality and values to describe brands and predict consumer reactions towards brands; however, the construct of power while pervasive in marketing and psychology research has been only minimally applied to brands. This is somewhat surprising as lists of the most powerful brands and articles about how to develop a powerful brand are regularly published in business periodicals. What exactly is a powerful brand? Do consumers easily see brands in terms of the power that they hold? What are the dimensions of brand power? This research attempts to answer these questions by outlining four dimensions that lead consumers to perceive a brand as powerful: associations with status, control of information resources, control of essential resources, and market dominance. In three studies, we not only confirm that these dimensions are associated with a perception of power in brands but also validate a scale measuring each dimension. Essay 2: Too Nice to be Dominant: How Warm Brand Images Impact Perceptions of Market Dominance Many brands have adopted a warm brand image in order to differentiate themselves from the competition. While perceptions of warmth may increase positive and comforting associations with these brands, we propose that it may reflect onto the image of the business and have a negative impact on perceptions of the brand s dominance in the category. Just as people rely on personality cues to make judgments about leadership, we believe that they rely on brand image cues to make similar judgments about brands. We propose that a warm image is in opposition to consumers perceptions of dominance. We demonstrate in four studies that when knowledge about market share is lacking participants perceive warm brands as having being less dominant in a product category than non-warm brands. Furthermore, we find that this effect is driven by perceptions that the warm brands are less competitive. Essay 3: When Bigger Isn t Better: How Perceptions of Market Dominance Interact with Existing Brand Images to Impact Brand Perceptions Past research suggests that communicating dominance over competitors is generally beneficial to a brand. However, this research proposes that certain brands, namely those that have built a warm brand image, might not benefit from communicating market dominance. Results from four studies, using both real and fictitious brands in a variety of product categories, demonstrate that communicating dominance over the competition can be harmful to warm brands. This effect is driven by dilution of the brand s warm image triggered by the inconsistency between the power meanings in the dominant message and the brand s warm image. Evidence for the underlying mechanism emerged in mediation analyses using measures of brand warmth. Additional evidence was provided by demonstrating that toning down power-related meanings in a dominant message via framing the message in terms of the norms that describe the behavior of consumers in the category attenuates the effects. Finally, our findings demonstrate that the dilution effects triggered by a dominant message only emerge for warm brands from categories in which warmth is not a normative attribute (i.e., warm-neutral categories) but not for categories in which warmth is a normative attribute stored at the category level (i.e., warm categories). 2 S t o n e r

7 APPENDIX ABSTRACTS OF JOURNAL PUBLICATIONS Torelli, Carlos J. & Jennifer L. Stoner (2015), Managing Cultural Equity: A Theoretical Framework for Building Iconic Brands in Globalized Markets, in Deborah J. Macinnis and C. Whan Park (eds.), Review of Marketing Research: Brand Meaning Management. Creating distinctive, favorable brand meanings is at the heart of building brand equity. In the hyper-competitive markets of the 21st century, it is not enough for a brand to be competitive by means of delivering functional benefits to consumers, as brands across product categories are pushed to also deliver emotional and symbolic benefits). Although many brands can succeed at creating abstract brand meanings, only a few brands can set themselves apart and also become cultural icons. Because iconic brands inspire an enduring form of affection, recommendations from branding consultants on how to build iconic brands abound. Unfortunately, these recommendations often lack a strong theoretical basis and are very difficult to implement without the help of the expert advice proposing them. A key reason for this state of affairs is the ambiguity in the definition of an iconic brand. A key distinctive aspect of an iconic brand is its symbolism of abstract characteristics of a cultural group. It is precisely this distinctive symbolism that fuels the special affection that consumers exhibit toward an iconic brand. We refer to this special affection as the brand s cultural equity. In this article, we introduce a formal definition of cultural equity, identify its building blocks, and propose a framework for managing cultural equity. Torelli, Carlos J., Lisa M. Leslie, Jennifer L. Stoner, & Raquel Puente (2014), "Cultural Determinants of Status: Implications for Workplace Evaluations and Behaviors," Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, 123(1), Status is a valued workplace resource that facilitates career success, yet little is known regarding whether and how cultural orientation affects status attainment. We integrate status characteristics theory with the literature on individualism and collectivism and propose a cultural patterning in the determinants of status. Four studies (N = 379) demonstrate that cultural orientation influences the tendency to view high status individuals as competent versus warm (Study 1), uncover cultural differences in both individuals tendency to engage in competence and warmth behaviors to attain workplace status (Study 2) and evaluators tendency to ascribe status to individuals who demonstrate competence versus warmth (Study 3), and verify that cultural differences in the effects of competence and warmth on status perceptions, and in turn performance evaluations, generalize to real world interdependent groups (Study 4). Our findings advance theory on the cultural contingencies of status attainment and have implications for managing diversity at work. ABSTRACTS OF PAPERS UNDER REVIEW Wang, Yajin, Jennifer L. Stoner, & Deborah Roedder John, You re Not Fooling Anyone! How Social Feedback Affects Moral Disengagement and the Purchase of Counterfeit Luxury Products (invited for revision at Journal of Marketing Research) To curb counterfeit sales, luxury brands are launching anti-counterfeit ads aimed at consumers. To be more effective, the authors argue that these ads need to address the social aspects of counterfeit consumption, especially the role of social feedback. In three studies, the authors show that the type of social feedback one receives while wearing a luxury counterfeit affects moral reasoning about counterfeits as well as future interest in purchasing counterfeits. Participants who received a question (compliment) about the item were more (less) concerned about negative consequences of using a counterfeit, were less (more) likely to morally disengage and justify purchasing counterfeit products, and were less (more) interested in purchasing counterfeits in the future. In a final study, the authors use these findings to design a new appeal for anti-counterfeit ads, which warns that others can easily spot counterfeits and encourages the sales of authentic products to avoid being caught. Results show this appeal to be effective in reducing interest in purchasing luxury counterfeit products, especially for consumers who had purchased these products in the past. 8 Stoner, Jennifer L. & Barbara Loken, The Name Game: How Naming Promotes Effects Beneficial to Marketers, (under review at Journal of Consumer Psychology) The naming of inanimate objects is prevalent in American culture; however, experimental research has yet to examine this phenomenon. The present research reports the novel and important finding that when consumers are induced to name an ordinary object, their naming of it increases their liking for it, their purchase intentions, and their propensity to view it as human-like. The marketing benefits occurred for both online photographs and presence of the actual product, persisted over time, and occurred more when the consumer (versus marketer) named the object. Evidence was found that anthropomorphism mediated changes in liking and purchase intent. Implications of the naming effect for marketers are discussed. Torelli, Carlos J., Rohini Ahluwalia, Shirley Y.Y. Cheng, & Jennifer L. Stoner, Redefining Home: Immigrant State of Mind and Consumer Preferences for Regional Brands. (under review at Journal of Consumer Research) In a world of increasing global mobility, we introduce the construct of the immigrant state of mind defined as a mental state in which the consumer experiences a heightened sense of separation between home and host cultures, and feels a desire to identify with one s home culture. We examine how this immigrant state influences consumers preferences for regional brands (i.e., brands associated with a region comprised of subgroups in close geographical proximity). Results from two field studies and four experiments demonstrate that consumers experiencing the immigrant state, when presented with regional brands (associated with subgroups nested within a regional identity) in a consumption situation, are likely to recategorize their identity at a regional level, demonstrating a pro-ingroup bias for these products and brands, even if they are not the favored option in the choice set. However, this pro-ingroup bias is attenuated under high levels of regional rivalry salience, where experiencing the immigrant state can backfire and result in less favorable evaluations of brands associated with a regional subgroup. 8 S t o n e r
