Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Donor Report 2012 We cannot thank our donors enough for their support over the years. A Letter from the Chairman This is an exciting time for Gettysburg Hospital and the Adams County community. Over the past few years we have seen continued commitment and growth from our donors and community for the great work of Gettysburg Hospital. In this report, some of our major accomplishments of the hospital and the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation are highlighted. This report also recognizes the generous and giving supporters who have helped us realize these accomplishments over the years. We are truly grateful to all who have contributed and helped us reach our goal of making Adams County an extraordinary place to live, work and play, as well as a healthier community. I have always been impressed with how caring and supportive our community is, and you will see that thread through all of the articles in this report. It is our mission to provide care to all and to be sure that those who are most vulnerable in our community have access to the care they need. Our donors help us make this happen, and they help us reach more people than ever before. You will find a list of donors from 2011, along with recognition of those who have given in the five years prior. Every individual or corporation on that list has contributed to our mission. Having been a supporter of the Foundation for more than 30 years and a Foundation board member for more than 12 years, I am confident that with your continued support we can remain committed to meeting the needs of the community. We thank you for helping your neighbors and friends in our community. Wayne D. Hill Chairman, Board of Directors Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Wayne D. Hill 4 5

Dora Townsend Drive around beautiful Adams County, and it s hard to find anything out of place. But look past the scenic country roads, rolling farms and quaint small towns, and you ll find some residents who live in society s margins. People who work full-time jobs but have no health insurance. Children who are abused or neglected. Families that have no doctor to turn to when illness strikes. The Gettysburg Hospital Foundation exists to help these people. I m very proud to support the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation, which does so much to improve the health of our community heritagefounded in 1983, the Foundation A heritage of investing in a healthy community is a community-based, not-forprofit corporation that supports the health and well being of people in Adams County and adjacent counties in northern Maryland. It carries out this mission by soliciting donations and grants from individuals, foundations, corporations and other entities. Money raised goes to support health-related programs and organizations in the community, including WellSpan s Gettysburg Hospital. Dora Townsend and her husband are regular donors and members of the Foundation s Cornerstone Society. Dora also serves on the Gettysburg Hospital board. There are so many organizations to which we could give, but the Foundation is one of the most important, she says. We have a lot of pride in our community and Gettysburg Hospital, and the programs the Foundation supports play pivotal roles in Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Donor Report 2012 keeping our friends and neighbors healthy. Within the Foundation, there are a number of funds that area residents and organizations can support. For example, the Foundation s Children s Health Fund provides free health services, screenings and education programs to the estimated 1,200 children in Adams County with no medical insurance. The Foundation also supports the salary of a full-time nurse at the Adams County Children s Advocacy Center, which brings together many different professionals to help children who have been abused. The Foundation also supports WellSpan s HealthConnect mobile health van, which travels throughout the county offering free or deeply discounted preventive health services and treatment for short-term injuries and minor illnesses, says Theresa Law, executive director for WellSpan Philanthropy. Another source of funds for the Foundation comes from the employees at Gettysburg Hospital. Each year, donations made through the Employee Giving Campaign support a different area of the hospital. Funds raised in 2012 will help purchase new equipment for the hospital s labor and delivery area. Employees can also direct their contributions to one of the Foundation s funds that support services in the community. I m very proud to support the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation, which does so much to improve the health of our community says Townsend. We live in a very, very special place, and the Foundation plays an important role in keeping it that way. 6 7

JoAnn Smith Now it s time to help the next patient. promising Promising to continue helping patients in need JoAnn Smith remembers her first thought after being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 49: How am I going to get my family through this? Like many cancer patients, Smith wasn t only fighting for her life; she was also facing the huge financial burden that can accompany that fight. Fortunately for her and many other patients, the Adams County Cancer Patient Help Fund is available to act as a financial lifeline. Through the help fund, a qualified patient can receive assistance with his/her mortgage, rent, utility bills, food costs, transportation expenses, medicine and copays. The fund receives no governmental support. Instead, it is funded entirely through donations and fundraising events. One of the fund s largest sources of money comes from the income generated by a $1.8 million unrestricted gift left by the late Mary Deardorff, a long-time donor to the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation. According to Deardorff s nephew, Kevin Diehl, and her financial advisor, Paul Ketterman, she would be pleased to know that the gift is supporting such a worthwhile cause. Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Donor Report 2012 People often don t appreciate the impact that cancer can have on a household income, explains Theresa Law, executive director for WellSpan Philanthropy. It s very hard to focus on healing when you re worrying about how to make ends meet. The help fund lessens stress on patients and allows them to focus 100 percent of their attention on healing. In 2011, the help fund distributed more than $92,000 in support to patients and their families. For Smith, the fund was there when she needed it. I had to stop working while I was being treated, says Smith, who had a single mastectomy and later received chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Thanks to the help fund, I had money to buy groceries every month and gas for the car. Now recovering, Smith has found a way to help others who are fighting cancer. She makes lawn ornaments, bird houses and other crafts that she donates as raffle prizes to the help fund. I received my help and am so thankful to be healthy enough to give back to the fund that helped me during such a trying time, she says. Now it s time to help the next patient. 8 9

Cynthia Ford Unlike professional tennis matches or golf games, winning isn t the main motivator for the hundreds of area residents who take part in the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation s annual tennis and golf tournaments. Instead, the participants are driven by the desire to give back to their community while enjoying a day of friendly competition and fun. The community really comes together for these two events local residents, former patients and local businesses. community Caring donors bring the community together for good causes These tournaments are the Foundation s two signature events of the year, and they bring together people from throughout the area, says Cynthia Ford, a member of the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation board and president of the Times & News Publishing Company. Money raised at these events goes to support important community health programs as well as Gettysburg Hospital. The annual Benefit Tennis Tournament, which is held each May at Gettysburg College, supports the annual Adams County Young Women s/young Men s Leadership Conference. This popular, day-long educational event held each fall is for every 7th grader who attends public or private school in Adams County. During the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Donor Report 2012 conference, students hear from motivational speakers on such topics as wellness, empowerment, leadership and respect. The conference is sponsored by the W.E.L.L. Consortium, a group of dedicated professionals from Gettysburg Hospital, Gettysburg College, Adams County Middle School counselors and the American Association of University Women. Now in its 27th year, the Benefit Golf Tournament takes place at the Links of Gettysburg golf course each July. Approximately 250 golfers and 50 volunteers come together to raise about $80,000 money that benefits the Foundation s Children s Health Fund. This fund was established in 1999 to meet the health needs of uninsured and underprivileged children and families through free health services and screenings, education programs and community partnerships. In the past, the fund has supported the salary of a fulltime nurse at the Adams County Children s Advocacy Center, the operation of the HealthConnect mobile health van and free dental care at Adams County Dental Health Services. The community really comes together for these two events...local residents, former patients, local businesses, says Ford. The tournaments are a great way to enjoy the camaraderie of friends while raising money for muchneeded health programs in our community

Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Donor Report 2012 Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Donor Report 2012 Community programs that fit your priorities Our caring donors have unique reasons for getting involved with philanthropy in the community through the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation. The different ways you can contribute and join your family, friends, colleagues and neighbors to provide the highest level of healthcare for our community include: Lectureships Lectureships are an educational opportunity for current physicians, residents and community members to learn about specific advances in healthcare and to bring national, regional and statewide experts to Gettysburg. Employee and Physician Giving Campaigns The generous support the Foundation receives from our colleagues at WellSpan shows that employees and physicians are both giving to and caring for our community. Special Events Gettysburg Hospital Benefit Golf Tournament Gettysburg Hospital Benefit Tennis Tournament Gettysburg Hospital Auxiliary The Gettysburg Hospital Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that provides a vital link between Gettysburg Hospital and the community. The auxiliary advocates for improved community health through innovative programs, preventative education, community partnerships and fundraising. Memorial and Honor Gifts Tributes to loved ones are a significant way for donors to connect with our programs. The proceeds received from these gifts help our organization continue to provide excellent care
