Name of the contact person: John Miles Arup Position of the contact person: Director Sustainable Projects Contact details: Objectives of the practice: An innovative approach to charging electric buses is to enable the quieter, cleaner future of public transport in Milton Keynes. Six organisations led by subsidiary of Mitsui & Co Europe signed a five year collaboration agreement committing to the replacement of seven diesel buses with their allelectric counterparts on one of the main bus routes in the city by June Process and detailed content of the practice (Description): The new buses will be able to recharge their batteries wirelessly through the day which means that for the first time, electric buses will be capable of the equivalent load of a diesel bus. The number 7 route in Milton Keynes will replace seven diesel buses with eight electric buses that will run 7 days a week; removing approximately 500 tonnes of tailpipe CO2 emissions per year as well as 45 tonnes of other tailpipe emissions. The route currently transports over 775,000 passengers a year over a total of 450,000 miles. Mitsui and MBK Arup Sustainable Projects (MASP) ultimate aim is use the data collected by the Milton Keynes trial to demonstrate the economic viability of low-carbon public transport. This data could be used to kick-start electric bus projects in other towns and cities worldwide; yet another instance of Milton Keynes being used as a showcase low carbon city. The buses will charge when power transmitted from a primary coil buried in the road is picked up by a secondary coil on the bus. 10 minutes parked over a coil will replenish two thirds of the energy consumed by the bus's route. The primary coils will be placed at three points on the bus route, and the buses will charge in the time scheduled for driver breaks at the end of the route. Origin: The collaborators will introduce wirelessly charged electric buses onto Milton Keynes roads by June The trial will be managed by Mitsui-Arup joint venture MBK Arup Sustainable Projects (MASP). The project will install inductive electric vehicle charging systems at selected locations in Wolverton and Bletchley which will enable the Route 7 bus service to be operated by a fleet of battery electric Pag. 4

6 buses. The Arriva Route 7 bus service is currently provided by a fleet of seven diesel buses. The route runs between three major railway stations in the Borough of Milton Keynes; Wolverton and Bletchley which provide local and some limited inter-city services and Milton Keynes Central which provides inter-city main-line service on the West Coast Main Line. Milton Keynes has an established low-carbon living agenda, which is currently supported by a number of low carbon transport initiatives which include the development of an extensive network of electric vehicle charging posts. The route has been carefully selected to be representative of a typical sub-urban bus service. The project will test the introduction a zero-carbon bus service which will run between three different multi-modal interchanges, each with its own unique role in the transport of passengers in the Borough of Milton Keynes. The route provides existing interfaces with a number of different train services, together with other elements of Milton Keynes low carbon transport system. Remarks: Pag. 5
