1 Equality and Diversity Introduction to the Diversity Awards Scheme by Christine King, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Staffordshire University I am delighted to once again have the privilege of introducing the Diversity Awards presented by Staffordshire University, as I recognise the continuing importance and value of this scheme. Staffordshire University has always been proactive in encouraging and celebrating diversity, and in recognising the enormous benefits diversity offers to us, both as an organisation and as a prominent member of the local and regional community. This awards scheme has once again demonstrated the range of activities with which our staff, students, regional partners and community organisations are involved, and the high degree of commitment so many have to the promotion of diversity and inclusion. Staffordshire University is therefore delighted to make available for the second year this opportunity to celebrate diversity and to acknowledge and applaud the work, creativity and initiative of all the entrants for the diversity awards scheme. As far as we are concerned, they are all winners, and we look forward to even bigger and better events in subsequent years. About the Diversity Awards Scheme Staffordshire University s Diversity Awards Scheme has the following primary objectives: To raise awareness of the importance of diversity related issues To celebrate, reward and encourage good practice To enable the sharing of best practice amongst organisations, institutions and individuals To encourage networking and the development of mutual support networks amongst organisations and groups committed to the promotion of the benefits and values of diversity amongst staff and students. To support and encourage the establishment and development of new initiatives on diversityrelated matters Diversity awards are therefore designed to identify where good practice exists and to promote and encourage successful schemes and initiatives to a wider audience. 4 Presenting The Prizes Sir Bill Morris, OJ, Chancellor of Staffordshire University Sir Bill Morris, a leading public figure who has spent his life defending the rights of others, was inaugurated as Chancellor of Staffordshire University in Throughout his life Sir Bill, an honorary graduate of the University since 2002, has been motivated by the need to challenge injustice and to create opportunities and respect for those denied these key human conditions. As leader of one of the United Kingdom s largest trade unions, the Transport and General Workers Union (T&G) Sir Bill represented the rights of more than a million people. Elected General Secretary in 1991, Sir Bill was the first black person to take up such a senior role in the British trade union movement. He retired from the position in October 2003 after more than four decades of dedicated work to building a better future for the working people of Britain. He campaigned vigorously for the minimum wage. Sir Bill was knighted in the Queen s 2003 birthday honours. He was also awarded the Order of Jamaica (OJ) by the Jamaican Government in October In 2004 Sir Bill was placed joint seventh in the list of 100 great black Britons, a position he shared with veteran ITN newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald. A formidable public figure, Sir Bill s forthright views are always taken seriously across the political spectrum. He is currently leading the Morris Inquiry into professional standards and workplace issues within the Metropolitan Police service. Sir Bill came to the UK in 1954, joining his widowed mother, and first lived in Birmingham s Handsworth district where he started work at local engineering company Hardy Spicers, attending day-release courses in engineering skills at Handsworth Technical College. He has always recognised the importance of providing access to education for all. During his long career with the T&G he participated in the union s considerable education programme, learning about the trade union movement, labour history, industrial law, and health and safety issues. As Chancellor of Staffordshire University Sir Bill will be performing an important ceremonial and ambassadorial role for the University. In agreeing to become the University s new Chancellor, Sir Bill said: I very much look forward to working more closely with a University that is committed to giving people from all backgrounds the opportunities they deserve. Sir Bill follows in the footsteps of Lord Ashley of Stoke, who retired as Chancellor of the University in Lord Ashley, former MP for Stoke-on-Trent South, became the University s first Chancellor in 1992 when the institution was awarded university status. Sir Bill paid tribute to Lord Ashley and said: As well as being a fearless champion for those with disabilities, Jack has made a significant contribution to the work and life of the University through its growing years. He will be a very hard act to follow. 4
5 Category Award Winners Category Winner Celebrating Diversity Diversity Workbook This scheme, submitted on behalf of Staffordshire University by Clare Ridgley from the Promoting Diversity team, involved the issue of a Diversity Workbook to every employee at the University. This initiative offered an opportunity for each individual to read about diversity, understand the issues involved and undertake a telephone check to test themselves on their knowledge and comprehension of the material. Category Winner Community Involvement and Funding Awarded Cherry Orchard Garden Services This project, submitted by Ian Wells on behalf of Staffordshire Social Services, supported people with a learning disability giving them the confidence and competence to set up a social firm, whilst at the same time assisting vulnerable elderly people to continue to live in their own homes. Category Winner Raising Aspirations and Funding Awarded Access to Leisure and the Arts Lichfield District Council and Making Space have identified a need to enable people with mental health needs to freely access leisure and arts facilities either independently, or with support from family and/or carers. This assists them in maintaining or improving their quality of life, promotes social inclusion and reduces dependency upon medication. Other Successful Funding Applications Black and Mixed Heritage Project This project, submitted by Dean Wilson-Cunningham, aims to work directly with black and mixed heritage young people in order to raise aspirations, create positive role models and promote race equality by means of mentoring and the development of research skills. The project will be developed in association with Stoke City Football Club and will involve students from 10 local high schools. Recruitment and Selection Training for Service Users This project, submitted by Teresa Brough from Moorlands Day Service, proposed the provision of recruitment and selection training for service users, in order to enable them to be involved in interview panels and other selection activities for recruitment of staff. Sidestep This application was submitted by Stephanie Tooth, a researcher at Staffordshire University. The Sidestep project, a joint initiative from Staffordshire University s Faculty of Health and Sciences and the Students Union, aims to develop the capacity of students, academic and technical/support staff to support students with disabilities in undertaking laboratory and practice based learning in sport and exercise science. Support for Older Gay and Lesbian People Age Concern has identified a lack of support currently available for older lesbians and gay men wishing to access services from statutory and voluntary organisations. This project, submitted by Tracey Humphries, aims to raise awareness of the issues relevant to this client group, and to ensure that their needs are adequately met by professionals working in relevant areas. 5
6 Other Applications Black and Ethnic Minority Community Participation in Music Technology Education Submitted by Mark Thorley, this project aims to investigate the participation and inclusion of black and ethnic minority students in Music Technology education. Busy-Bodies This project, entered by Denise Deakin, encourages and promotes parent-child bonding and selfesteem amongst children aged 0-4 years. City Arts Project The LGBT Community Group, led by Tony Meredith, works within the community to counteract stereotyped views of gay and lesbian people and to break down barriers by means of art and drama sessions. Diversity Awareness for Prisoners and Staff This project, submitted by Dave Cherriman, proposes the development of diversity awareness sessions within HMP Stafford. This would be of benefit not only to the staff, but also to the very diverse prison population in which people from ethnic minorities have greater than average representation. Diversity Induction Staffordshire University has established a diversity induction programme for all new employees. Covering a half day, this was first delivered in June 2004 and has now been attended by 59 members of staff. Submitted by Clare Ridgley, the initiative demonstrates the University s commitment to diversity and ensures that employees to understand their own responsibilities in relation to diversity and behaviour at work from the start of their employment at Staffordshire University. Flexible Employment Options (FEO) Project Submitted by Alison Hunt, this project offers training in introducing flexible employment options to line managers working in higher education. This in turn, is intended to promote the benefits of a more diverse staff population, to meet the needs of students, staff and other stakeholders in higher education institutions. Hate Crime Reporting Project This project, entered by Sarah Smith from Staffordshire Probation, identified a need to develop appropriate policies and reporting mechanisms in relation to hate crimes. Haywood Pyramid Carnival This project, entered on behalf of Haywood High School by Jill Chadwick, proposed the use of a two day carnival workshop to develop the previous sessions undertaken within the pyramid. HE Full Circle - Information Booklet in Urdu This project, submitted by Wendy Munro on behalf of the HE Full Circle project, proposed the development an information booklet in Urdu. The rationale was to target people whose first language is not English, in order to encourage both their parents and themselves to re-evaluate the benefits of higher education, by providing information in their own language. HE Full Circle - OCN Level 1 Guidance, Preparation and Progression This proposal, the second submitted by Wendy Munro on behalf of the HE Full Circle, has identified a need for student ambassadors to offer an Open College Network course to adults and children who are unclear about the range of educational and learning opportunities available to them and to raise the aspirations of potential students to consider studying in a higher education environment. 6
7 Other Applications Management Development Programme Emma Clayton from Staffordshire University s Personnel Services described how the Management Development Programme has enabled more than 250 participants to benefit from training in a range of areas, including diversity with specific workshops on race and disability equality. Petits Papiers (Little Papers) This project, submitted by Céline Djiakoua, has taken the form of an interactive mobile, in which all visitors are invited to express their views and their own personal ideas. Céline is a graduate student at Staffordshire University. Spring Out This scheme, based in Leek and the Staffordshire Moorlands, involves individuals with a learning disability visiting and demonstrating to community groups and school children skills in craft, using recycled materials. This very successful project, which was a category winner from last year s Diversity Awards scheme, is now extending its remit to use the service users as ambassadors, encouraging school children and member so fthe community to consider care as a career option. This project has been entered by Anna Clark, the project manager Stafford Carnival Partnership This proposal identifies how multiculturalism is promoted in Stafford by means of a carnival and workshop activities, working with a range of organisations and schools, including a special school for children and young people with learning disabilities. Stafford Muslim Women and Children Get Active Hifsa Iqbal, based in the Faculty of Health and Sciences at Staffordshire University, identified particular problems and challenges faced by the Muslim community in Stafford. This project aims to counteract the social isolation faced by many Muslim women and children, by providing opportunities to participate and develop social networks by means of sporting and social activities. The initiative is now moving on to develop an Active in Age Peer Mentor course. Student Support Mentoring Scheme This initiative matches students with a disability or students from an ethnic minority background with mentors to provide support and assistance throughout their time at university. This scheme has been entered by Jill Allen, based in Student Support at Staffordshire University. Volunteering for All Nicky Burns of the Tamworth Volunteer Centre described how the Centre had increased access to volunteering amongst underrepresented groups and provided access to training for volunteers, as well as a supported volunteering scheme. The proposals outlined how the volunteering programme would like to extend its activities to include more work with volunteers with learning disabilities. Working in Partnership for Special Needs Support This project, submitted by Pat Price on behalf of Sure Start and the Peter Pan Nursery, described the work that has been undertaken to put in place support, information and guidance to assist children with special needs and their parents, and to promote and encourage their self-esteem. 7
