Residential Life and Housing Room Selection Guide Residential Life and Housing developed the room selection process with input from CCSGA. The process is devised to meet the needs of many individuals in the most effective and equitable way. It is designed to enable you to have a diverse set of choices in your living communities. Each community is geared toward helping you create an experience that is appropriate for your year in school. The information in this Guide is offered in order to help you make informed decisions as you choose where you will live next year. Your participation in this process is crucial, and you are encouraged to think carefully about your selection of roommates, space, and community before finalizing your decision. All relevant forms are available on our website as well as in our office in Bemis Hall. We want to make you aware of some important changes for the coming year: We re excited to announce the CrossROADS Special Interest Community. It will be housed in Slocum and will consist of spaces for 14 students. See the Specialized Community section of this Guide for additional information. The Spirit of Non-Violence LLC has been replaced by the Spiritual Practices LLC. For more information on this community, refer to the Specialized Community section below. We will be offering gender neutral housing options. Interested students will be able to name a roommate of their choosing regardless of their gender. Refer to the Gender Neutral Housing Guide on our website at for additional details. 1

Important Information Overview of Room Selection Procedures Each student must complete the online housing application, which is due by March 3, If you require housing accommodations due to a disability, please complete an Application for Special Consideration for On-campus Housing. You may access the application on our website or pick one up in the Residential Life and Housing office in Bemis Hall. This application is due in the Residential Life and Housing office by March 11, In addition to completing this application, students requesting disability-related housing accommodations (e.g., accessible housing, access to a kitchen or single-use bathroom, visual alarm), must register with the office of Disability Services if they have not already done so ( ; Learning Commons at Tutt Library, room 152; disabilityservices@coloradocollege.edu). In order to allow sufficient time for the College to evaluate and respond to your request for accommodations and to work with Residential Life and Housing timelines, please schedule a meeting with the Director of Disability Services no later than March 4, 2014 to discuss your request. Disability Services and Residential Life and Housing will carefully consider each request for accommodations on a case-by-case basis to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to the College s housing resources. If you feel that you have special circumstances that warrant being offered a space without having to go through the traditional room selection processes, you should submit an Application for Special Consideration for On- Campus Housing to Residential Life and Housing by March 11, This is an application for special accommodation in the room selection process, not for off-campus housing. Please call our office with any questions. You may access the application on our website or pick one up in the Residential Life and Housing office. If you will not have computer access during the room selection time slot assigned to you or if you will be unable to complete any of the other processes associated with room selection, it is your responsibility to designate another student as a proxy to act on your behalf. Proxy authorizations must be completed as part of the online housing registration process or by submitting a completed form to the Residential Life and Housing office. ed authorizations are also acceptable. Proxy information should be turned in prior to March 31 st when the apartment applications are due. No one will be allowed to select a room for you unless we have record that the specific individual is serving as your proxy. Please choose your proxy carefully, as you will be entrusting this person with the responsibility of selecting a room for you. Information your proxy must have in order to select your room: The name(s) and six digit ID number(s) of your preferred roommate(s), if applicable Your building and room choices (you should provide at least three in the order in which you desire that space). The specific room selection time slot to which you ve been assigned Because we strongly advise you not to share your login information with anyone, your proxy will not be able to log into the room selection website to choose a space for you. Instead, he/she should come to the Residential Life and Housing office during your designated time slot. S/he should bring your requested roommate information, if applicable, and your building and room choices so that we can help him/her select a space for you. If you believe you will be studying abroad for the fall, 2014 semester, you will still need to complete the housing agreement online in preparation for your return to campus housing in the spring. It is also important that you complete the online room preference information so that we are aware of your housing preferences as we begin to make room assignments for the spring, 2015 semester. However, you will not go through the room selection process this spring. If you are not 18 before you complete the housing agreement, your parent/guardian will also need to complete a housing agreement for you before you can participate in room selection or be assigned to a room. You can download it from our website or come to our office for a paper version. You should still submit the online version by the March 3 rd deadline. If you do not participate in the room selection process and are not granted off-campus, you will still be assigned a room over the summer by Residential Life and Housing unless you are going abroad or taking a leave of absence in the fall. You must still provide a signed Housing Agreement. 2

Online Room Selection Process We strongly encourage you to attend one of the room selection information sessions that will be offered in February (see timeline on last page of this Guide) to ensure that you are familiar with the online process. Room Selection Time Slots The online room selection process is designed to be fair and random. Each on-campus student is assigned a time slot, which is based on class standing and/or semesters on campus at the start of the fall, 2014 semester. Time slots are randomly computer generated within each class. Students who have submitted their online Housing Agreement by the March 3 rd deadline will be given earlier time slots than the students within their class who have not submitted the agreement by the deadline. You will use this time slot if you are participating in regular room selection. If you are selecting a room with a roommate, you will use the earliest assigned time slot. All students will receive their time slots via their CC accounts, but you won t be able to access the Room Selection link on the housing website until you have completed your online Housing Agreement. Units* Time Slot Range Seniors 24+ Thursday, May 1 st from 1:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Juniors Thursday, May 1 st from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 2 nd from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sophomores Monday, May 5 th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 6 th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Time slots are assigned at three minute intervals. You can log in any time after your designated time, but you won t be able to log in prior to that time. Five students will be assigned the same time slot and will have the opportunity to select their room at the same time. If you believe you have received an incorrect time slot, please contact our office. If you are aware that you have credits that have not transferred, you will need to provide proof of those before we can issue a new time slot. Similarly, if you plan to take a summer course, you will need to have proof of registration in that course. Since time slots are generated randomly, you will not be penalized if your time is adjusted. Please refer to the Apartment Selection Guide for information on choosing an apartment, as this process is completely separate from the room selection process and will not take place online. Selecting Your Room Online Becoming familiar with the process and determining what rooms are available To select your room, you will to go to the same website at which you completed your online Housing Agreement. Use the same user name and password that you used for that process (your CC network login). At the bottom of the student home page is a link entitled Current Room Availability. Here you can keep track of which rooms have not yet been chosen, and you can also unofficially walk through the room selection process in preparation for the actual event during your assigned time slot. We urge you to visit this site early to become familiar with the process and ask any questions you might have so that you are prepared when it comes time to actually select your room. Once room selection begins, you ll want to monitor the site frequently to see what rooms have been selected so that, when it s your turn to choose a room, you know which ones are still available. Choosing your roommate You may choose your roommate at any time after you have completed the online Housing Agreement. This is done through the Roommate Selection link at the bottom of your student home page at You must know your chosen roommate s six digit student I.D. number, as that number is what you will enter here to identify your selected roommate. The number must total nine digits, so 3

you ll need to add 3 zeroes at the beginning of the ID number. For example, if your proposed roommate s ID is , you ll need to add 3 zeros before the 1, making the number Note that your roommate must also select you in order for the two of you to be able choose a room together. You may only select a roommate of the same gender. Selecting your room When your designated time slot begins, you will go to the Room Selection link at the bottom of your student home page at After clicking on this link, you ll be given the opportunity to confirm your roommate if you have mutually chosen each other. You ll also be able to select a specific building to search room availability. It s important that you have a list of preferred rooms handy so that you can move on quickly and easily if the first room you want is no longer available. Once you choose the building you want and hit Search, you ll see a list of rooms that fit your criteria (i.e., single, double, triple). When you see the room you want, just click on it, select the room, and you re done! Within a short time, you ll receive an to your CC account confirming your room selection. If you ve chosen a roommate, he/she will also receive a confirmation . Once you select a room and roommate, your roommate is also assigned to that room and will be unable to choose a different room. After you select a room, you are bound by that selection and will be unable to change it. Class Information & Apartments Seniors: Class of 2015 Senior standing is defined as having 24 credit units or having lived on campus for 6 semesters. Seniors have the best chance of getting their optimal room choice during room selection. They also have the option of staying on campus or applying to move off campus. To apply to move off, they must complete the two off-campus requirements and submit an application by April 30, Contact Kathy Butler at kbutler@coloradocollege.edu for details about the off-campus application process. After their off-campus requirements have been completed and the application has been submitted, seniors will be notified via whether or not the application has been approved. YOU SHOULD NOT SIGN A LEASE UNTIL YOU RECEIVE THIS , as you may be responsible for an on-campus room until you learn otherwise. Seniors who do not receive off-campus status by the April 30 th deadline may be assigned to and responsible for a room for the fall, 2014 semester. NOTE: Seniors who select a space in Western Ridge, a Theme Learning Community, a Language House, or sign a contract to be an RA will not be permitted to move off campus. Juniors: Class of 2016 Juniors typically live in small houses, language houses, the CC Inn, on-campus apartments, as well as larger buildings. You are encouraged to look at several housing options, including multiple-person apartments and small houses. If you are planning to try to get an apartment, please select your roommates carefully. Choose students with whom you can share a bathroom and a kitchen; being your best friend does not necessarily qualify someone to be your best roommate choice. As a result of the number of seniors who typically elect to remain on campus, please note that the apartments hold only about 150 students in the junior class. You should plan for several housing options, such as apartments and rooms in upper class areas. Conduct will be checked for apartment applicants. Sophomores: Class of 2017 The sophomore housing experience is geared toward helping sophomores learn to live with either their friends or students they do not know well. Personal responsibility and civic engagement are focuses of the sophomore living experience, especially since sophomores have the opportunity to influence first-year students in the large halls. One advantage of offering sophomores spaces within all of the large residence halls is that there are more single rooms that are available to sophomores. Note: Some sophomores may not receive rooms during room selection due to the overlap of students who have a room but end up taking a leave of absence or going abroad. During the summer, these students are placed through the wait list process. 4

Family Student Housing Residential Life and Housing will be offering one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments for students who want family housing. Priority for these apartments will go to students with children and then to students with spouses or domestic partners. The apartments will be pet-free. If you are interested, please contact Residential Life and Housing at If no interest in these apartments is expressed by April 9 th, they will be utilized for faculty/staff housing. Apartments- reserved for juniors/seniors The on-campus apartments are designed for junior and senior students to enjoy apartment style living. Staff works with students to encourage them to confront each other about conflicts and to learn about having more responsibility in cleaning and maintaining their own spaces. The apartments house many seniors who choose to live on campus and approximately 150 members of the junior class. Apartment selection will be held in Loomis Hall on April 7 and 8. Please refer to the Apartment Selection Guide for specific information. You must submit an apartment application no later than March 31 st in order to be eligible to live in the apartments. 6 the wait list process and are committed to living in the house for at least one semester. For more information about the Language Houses, please contact Emily Fogg at or Single Sex Housing Montgomery Hall is an all female residence that houses 25 students. In addition, one wing in Loomis Hall is designated all female. Historically, there has not been a sufficient level of interest to warrant an all male hall or wing.
