Why install a Business Class Firewall? Allows proper segmentation of Trusted and Untrusted computer networks (PCI Requirement) Restrict inbound and outbound traffic to that which is necessary for the cardholder data environment, and specifically deny all other traffic. (PCI Requirement) Review logs and security events to identify anomalies or suspicious activity. (PCI Requirement) Ensure that anti-virus mechanisms are actively running and cannot be disabled or altered by users, unless specifically authorized by management on a case-by-case basis for a limited time period. (PCI Requirement) https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org

Network Basics and Segmentation Network segmentation is a strategy intended to simplify PCI compliance of your network and to help you protect your business from hackers. At the most basic level, there are three zones representing three levels of risk. Untrusted Environment Network connections that anonymous people have access to are considered untrusted. They should have no network access to your business computers and POS equipment. Business computers should never be connected directly to this zone. Common untrusted networks are customer wireless internet access, and visitor network connections. This is the highest risk zone because anybody can connect to it anonymously. Never store cardholder data on Internet-accessible Non Card Data Business Environment Systems not used for payment processing, but are still business owned fit into this segment. These are systems that can be used for , web browsing, and other higher risk activity that you would never want to perform on your payment processing systems. On occasion, these systems will almost certainly become infected with malware and viruses. Note that if any systems in this zone handle credit card data, that data is being put at risk. This is a medium risk zone due to risk of occasional infection. By segmenting these systems into their own zone, the breach is contained. The hacker, malware, or virus doesn t reach your protected payment processing zone. Card Data Business Environment Systems used for payment processing fit into this segment. These systems should only be used for POS activity and should NEVER be used for any other reason. Should these computers become infected with malware or viruses, sophisticated hacking tools can potentially steal sensitive data such as credit cards. The average cost of a breach for a small merchant is $36,000. This is a low risk zone because it s protected from the other two zones and high risk activities such as web browsing.

PCI Requirements met by this configuration Current network diagram that identifies all connections between the cardholder data environment and other networks, including any wireless networks 1.2 Build firewall and router configurations that restrict connections between untrusted networks and any system components in the cardholder data environment Restrict inbound and outbound traffic to that which is necessary for the cardholder data environment, and specifically deny all other traffic. (accomplished through separation of POS network and filtering of internet traffic on the POS network) Secure and synchronize router configuration files. 5.3 Ensure that anti-virus mechanisms are actively running and cannot be disabled or altered by users, unless specifically authorized by management on a case-by-case basis for a limited time period.

PCI Requirements met by this configuration Install perimeter firewalls between any all wireless networks and the cardholder data environment, and configure these firewalls to deny or, control (if such traffic is necessary for business purposes), permit only authorized traffic from or between the wireless environment into and the cardholder data environment. 1.3 Prohibit direct public access between the Internet and any system component in the cardholder data environment Do not allow any direct connections inbound or outbound for traffic between the Internet and the cardholder data environment Implement anti-spoofing measures to detect and block forged source IP addresses from entering the network Do not allow unauthorized outbound traffic from the cardholder data environment to the Internet Implement stateful inspection, also known as dynamic packet filtering. (That is, only established connections are allowed into the network.)

Other Area s of PCI that Datum is currently reviewing 2.2 Develop configuration standards for all system components. Assure that these standards address all known security vulnerabilities and are consistent with industry-accepted system hardening standards Configure system security parameters to prevent misuse. 3.1 Keep cardholder data storage to a minimum by implementing data retention and disposal policies, procedures and processes 3.2 Do not store sensitive authentication data after authorization (even if encrypted). If sensitive authentication data is received, render all data irretrievable upon completion of the authorization process Ensure wireless networks transmitting cardholder data or connected to the cardholder data environment, use industry best practices ( e.g., IEEE i) to implement strong encryption for authentication and transmission.

Other Area s of PCI that Datum is currently reviewing 5.1 Deploy anti-virus software on all systems commonly affected by malicious software (particularly personal computers and servers). 5.3 Ensure that anti-virus mechanisms are actively running and cannot be disabled or altered by users, unless specifically authorized by management on a case-by-case basis for a limited time period Change user passwords/passphrases at least every 90 days Passwords/phrases must meet the following: Require a minimum length of at least seven characters. Contain both numeric and alphabetic characters.

Focus POS Credit Card Data Specifics Every Focus Point of Sale version beginning with Version 7.4 fully encrypts the credit cardholder data. Encrypted credit card track information exists only during the authorization process. Upon completion of the authorization process the encrypted credit card track information is cleansed and physically deleted. Credit card numbers exist beyond the authorization process, but remain encrypted. Credit card numbers are always masked on displayed or printed output. Access to credit card functions such as batching is controlled by user configured role based rights. Configuration of role based rights is strictly limited to employees with the highest level of rights. Focus Point of Sale logs all requests to access masked credit card numbers. Logs do not contain unmasked credit card data or other cardholder data. Upon successful settling of the batch the encrypted credit card numbers are physically removed from the settle file (trans2).

Wireless Networks If you set up or have a preexisting wireless network, take the following precautions to remain PCI compliant. If the wireless network is not used by your payment processing systems, make sure that a firewall prevents access to the payment processing systems. Wireless networks attached to your payment processing network MUST meet the following PCI DSS requirements: New and existing wireless setups must use WPA2 encryption. Some older wireless equipment lack WPA2 support. o The default WPA2 encryption key must be changed to a unique strong key. The default password for accessing the Wireless Access Point s settings must be changed to a unique strong password. Wireless networks attached to your payment processing network are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to enable additional security: Use wireless keys of 13 random characters containing letters, numbers, and symbols. Keys comprised of words or names are quickly found by criminals using readily available, easy to use tools. Disable SSID Broadcast to make your wireless network less visible to unauthorized users. Use MAC address filtering so that only authorized computers are allowed access to the wireless network. When configuring WPA2, use the AES option. Only use TKIP when AES is not an available option. Although not severe, there are known weaknesses in TKIP.

A recent news story tells of a Park City, Utah, restaurant that is questioning the right of its long-time merchant card processor to fine them for unproven data breaches. Fraudulent transactions totaling nearly $14,000 were blamed on a data breach at the restaurant. Although violations of PCI security standards were discovered within the restaurant s point-of-sale system, no such data breach at the restaurant was ever proven. Nevertheless, VISA and MasterCard fined the restaurant s card processor. The processor then withdrew $10,000 from the restaurant s account towards fines totaling $90,000. The processor is suing the restaurant for the rest of the fines. The restaurant is counter-suing, claiming that no breach was ever proven, that they never had a chance to defend themselves, and that they were never made aware of PCI compliance rules in the first place. As this case continues, it will be interesting to see how it unfolds and what the consequences for the credit card industry will be. But for now, there are several hard lessons to be learned: All merchants are expected to understand and comply with PCI security standards, even if their processor agreement was signed before PCI standards were available. If a merchant is not PCI compliant, even suspected data breaches can result in fines. Merchants have no opportunity to dispute claims before fines are taken. Merchants are responsible for third-party software they use to accept payments. The fines to merchants can be substantial and even greater than the actual loss. The common thread here is that merchants have significant responsibilities to assure the safety of their customers card data. There are high penalties for a data breach when a merchant is not PCI compliant. Many merchants buy data breach insurance to cover the damages, and that is a very good idea. But it doesn t solve the real problem and it doesn t bring all the benefits that being PCI compliant would. By being PCI compliant, merchants will gain trust from their customers (potentially increasing business), won t be responsible for security breaches (eliminating fines), and may have lower processing costs. Beyond that, PCI compliance often requires a comprehensive approach to data security that can help with other regulatory mandates and improve operations in general. In a world where theft of personal data is of concern, everyone needs to do their part to protect it.
