6 Human Services/Social Sciences Health Sciences/Allied Health Criminal justice is the system of practices and institutions of governments directed at upholding social control, deterring and mitigating crime, or sanctioning those who violate laws with criminal penalties and rehabilitation efforts. Careers in the health care industry are rewarding, both personally and professionally. Unlike some other industries, improvements in technology and declines in the economy do not have much of an effect on demand for health care professionals. Many people look to these types of careers for longterm job stability. The intrinsic rewards that come from caring for and helping people in need are valued by people in all levels of health care. North Central Michigan College provides programs that prepare students for employment opportunities in law enforcement, the courts or corrections. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, health care is one of the largest industries in the country, with more than 11 million jobs. Out of the 10 fastest growing careers, health jobs account for seven. Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement and Corrections Skills and abilities needed: Critical thinking, social perceptiveness, negotiation and persuasion, service orientation, problem sensitivity, oral expression and comprehension, reaction time, inductive reasoning, judgment and decision making. Most jobs in criminal justice, law enforcement and corrections require a four-year degree, so individuals interested in pursuing these careers should plan to eventually complete a bachelor s degree. Students planning to pursue a bachelor s degree using the AAS as a foundation should carefully choose their coursework with an advisor to maximize transferability.
