1 Report on Strategic Planning Survey REPORT ON STRATEGIC PLANNING SURVEY Percentages : Participant Relationship to SSW Other 5% Employers 1% Field Instructors 21% Faculty 11% Alumni 32% Students 30% *N=125, with n=16 overlap of multiple participant relationship responses Data Collection Responses were collected over a twelve day period (January 18 th through 30 th ) via , Facebook posting and messaging, in class, and at on campus field workshop. requests were sent out twice to faculty and field supervisors, once to members, and once to students and alumni via Facebook messaging. Of approximately 600 responses to questions and from around 125 participants, an estimated responses presented some negative and/or critical content about the program, 3.3% at an estimated 20 negative responses. There is no designation between participant relation to SSW and responses given. Coding was completed as a comprehensive thematic process using traditional Qualitative Data Analysis. Sample sizes and response rates are listed below. Overall response rate was approximately 49%. 2 CODING THEMES AND PATTERNS IN SURVEY RESPONSES Question 1 was the most complex and presented the strongest conceptual themes. Questions 2 through 5 progressively became more specific and action action-oriented. oriented. When viewed broadly as a bigger picture, the individual questions/answers build upon each other. For example, questions 2, 3, 4 & 5 provide vide evidence for need in question 1. In order to offer expanded programming online and on campus, increased financial and faculty resources are required to adjust to this growth. Many responses overlapped across all questions, specifically: trainings and CEU s, a Ph.D. program, involvement, and so on. These hese are noted in the codes. Question 1: WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THE SCHOOL IN 5 YEARS? Question 1 was the most complex and thematic, with seven specific yet overlapping patterned categories: a Social Work building (rank rank 7 in response frequency),, pride in the School with national ranking (rank 5), a PhD program (rank rank 33), online programming expansion (rank 6),, overall growth in diverse learning and enrollment (rank rank 11), a presence and investment nt in the, including alumni support (rank 2),, and a significant increase in funding for resources, faculty, students, and research (rank 4). The hierarchy below represents the higher frequency responses, although all codes were noted frequently throughout the data. 4 SPECIFIC TO FACULTY DISCUSSION ON LAB RESOURCES These hese rooms to be dedicated to the use of the only: 3 group/observation rooms with observation space, including two two-way way mirrors, at least 14x17 Minimum inimum 2 individual interview rooms with observation space, with two-way way mirrors, larger than 9x10 Nice, professional furniture designated for each these (at min. 5) rooms, not to be moved With technologically current audio and recording equipment for each room Question 2: WHAT PROGRAMS OR INITIATIVES COULD THE SCHOOL OFFER THAT WOULD BENEFIT YOU AND YOUR AGENCY OR FIELD OF SERVICE? Six codes emerged that represented answers of how the Sch School ool could offer initiatives and programming that would benefit participants agency or field of service, of which fell into two categories, Offerings and Specialization. Offerings include themes that represented CEUs and trainings, networking, job ob opportun ities and supervision, and research and resources. Specialization includes topics and subjects for trainings, field ideas, concentration expansion, certificate programming, and specialized electives. These responses overlap some with requests for CEU and training content. Codes are similar but not as complex as question 1 responses, and offer specific topics and ideas for expanding the program. These responses also reflect question 5 responses. 6 Question 3: WHAT QUALITITES WOULD YOU LIKE OUR SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS TO BRING INTO FIELD INTERNSHIP? Responses to question 3 diverged greatly from the first two questions and became much less thematic with very diverse responses. Codes are evident and overlap with questions 4 and 5. These fall into three categories: qualities and characteristics, actions, and specific ideas related to field preparation. Feedback, openness, and social work skill sets were overriding themes in question 3. 7 Question 4: WHAT QUALITIES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE OUR SOCIAL WORK GRADUATES EXHIBIT AS THEY ENTER THE PROFESSION? These responses are very similar to question #3, with perhaps more abstract personality qualities explicated upon entrance into the profession. The responses presented em empowerment powerment concepts toward students graduating, and a desire they feel passionate, secure, and know what they want in their career. Codes fell into three areas, qualities and characteristics, actions, and other specific ideas for entrance into the profession. Self-care, care, research skills, creativity creativity, and confidence were overriding themes. 8 Question 5: WHAT LEARNING OPPORTUNTIES CAN THE SCHOOL OFFER THAT WOULD HELP YOU D DEVELOP AS A PROFESSIONAL? Responses to learning as a professional that the School can offer participants consisted of specific actions and the School could provide, falling primarily under training and continuing education units with details, topics, and other qualifiers that would be beneficial. benefi Also found in the responses were themes of time for faculty to invest on research and course development. Although most responses were similar, the specific category designates some outliers and researchresearch related requests that explicated exact needs from respondents. Stress management and support after graduation were also notable themes themes, as seen in question 1 and 4. Themes were coded as 1) Actions/Offerings that would offer participants in professional development, and 2) Specifics of such actions. Many specific needs were presented that the School could provide for the, such as trainings, alumni support, expansion of online and on campus offerings, including specialization in certain areas, a PhD program, and an improvement in facilities, especially with a new building designated for Social Work. Respondents stated a sense of pride in the School s program, as well as the growth of the School, were very important, with a presence in the and a commitment for the to take the lead in service to all stakeholders.
