The ports on the front panel of the SAN Switch 2/16 EL are color-coded in groups, with four purple ports alternating with four unmarked ports. This indicates which ports can be used in the same ISL trunking group (see ISL Trunking, described next). Each port automatically negotiates to the highest common speed. The ports are capable of operating at Gbps or Gbps. Each port conforms to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Fibre Channel, FC-PI specification for Fibre Channel SFP transceivers. ISL Trunking ISL trunking is a Fabric OS feature that enables distribution of traffic over the combined bandwidth of up to four ISLs between two directly adjacent switches, while preserving in-order delivery. For specific information about ISL trunking, refer to the StorageWorks by Compaq ISL Trunking User Guide, Part Number AA-RR82A-TE. Fibre Channel SAN Switch 2/16 EL Installation Guide 1 3

Overview SFPs The switch uses SFP media to connect the ports to the fabric. SFPs are universal, self-configuring, and are customer supplied. SAN Switch 2/16 EL Rear Panel Figure 1 2 shows the rear panel of the SAN Switch 2/16 EL. The rear panel houses the fan trays, power supplies, and switch status LED. Each power supply also has an LED that indicates the status. 19 Overview Field-Replaceable Units The power supplies, fan trays, and motherboard can all be replaced in the field, without the use of special tools. The switch continues operating during the replacement of a fan tray or power supply, if they are replaced one at a time. The switch must be turned off during replacement of the motherboard. To simplify replacement, the switch has a minimum of internal cables and no jumpers or hardware settings. Replacement instructions are provided with all replacement units ordered. The right and left fan trays are identical and fit into either fan tray slot. The fans in the fan tray on the left (front view) are identified by the Fabric OS as fans #1 and #2. The fans in the fan tray on the right are identified as fans #3 and #4 by the Fabric OS. Fibre Channel SAN Switch 2/16 EL Installation Guide 1 5

2 Installing the Fibre Channel SAN Switch 2/16 EL This chapter covers the following topics: Important information about the four switch limitation Carton contents Installation and safety guidelines Installing the switch as a stand-alone unit or in a 9000 Series Rack Configuring network addressing Connecting to the LAN Connecting an SFP module Important Information about the Four Switch Limitation The SAN switch 8 EL and 16 EL shipping configurations integrate the IV_Domain_Fabric license. The IV_Domain_Fabric license limits the number of switches that can be connected to a single fabric to four. If more than four switches (of any type) are added to the fabric containing EL switches, Web Tools generates multiple error messages. Read the following sections for specific error messages and workarounds related to the four switch limitation. IMPORTANT: The 8 EL and 16 EL switches can be upgraded to full fabric support by installing an optional upgrade license. See the Four Switch Limitation Workarounds section in this chapter for instructions on how to purchase the Full Fabric license. Fibre Channel SAN Switch 2/16 EL Installation Guide 2 1

Installing the Fibre Channel SAN Switch 2/16 EL Check the License Installed To verify the switch s current license, use the telnet command: license show You do not have to delete the IV_Domain_Fabric license before upgrading to the Full Fabric license. Four Switch Limitation Errors The following section summarizes the error messages generated when more than four switches are installed in a fabric with the 8 EL or 16 EL. IMPORTANT: An operator can create a SAN with an 8 EL or 16 EL switch by upgrading the switches to full fabric. To upgrade, you must install the optional Full Fabric license on each 8 EL or 16 EL switch. See the Four Switch Limitation Workarounds section in this chapter for instructions on how to purchase the Full Fabric license. Four Switch Limitation CLI Error Messages If the fabric detects that the four switch limitation has been exceeded, the following message occurs every thirty seconds, via the Command Line Interface (CLI), as follows: CRITICAL FABRIC-SIZE_EXCEEDED, 1, Critical fabric size <8> exceeds supported configuration <4>. Switch status marginal. Contact Technical Support. WebTool will be disabled in 39 days 8 hours and 46 minutes. The switch warning messages may be stored in Syslog. Third party application SNMP traps may be configured on the switch. 2 2 Fibre Channel SAN Switch 2/16 EL Installation Guide

Installing the Fibre Channel SAN Switch 2/16 EL Four Switch Limitation Web Tools Error Messages If the fabric detects that the number of switches installed exceed the four switch limit, Web Tools displays a warning message every 75 seconds (not configurable). Figure 2 1 shows a typical Web Tools Warning Message. Figure 2 1: Four Switch Limitation Web Tools Error Message IMPORTANT: Each switch (8 EL or 16 EL) displays a separate error condition warning message in the dialog box. If the timer expires and a user tries to access Web Tools (for example, Zone Admin, Switch Admin, or Switch View), an HTML file similar to license.htm appears, stating that Web Tools is disabled. In addition, a prompt displays (see Figure 2 2 ) allowing you to install the optional Fabric license. After the Full Fabric license is installed, all Web Tools functionality resumes.. Figure 2 2: Full Fabric license install prompt in Web Tools Fibre Channel SAN Switch 2/16 EL Installation Guide 2 3

Installing the Fibre Channel SAN Switch 2/16 EL Violation Timer Errors The violation timer begins decrementing when the four switch limitation is exceeded. The timer is cumulative. Resetting the power cycle or rebooting the switch will not reset the timer. If the switch is moved to a fabric with less than five switches, the error condition is cleared; however, the violation timer stops counting down. If the switch is moved to a fabric with more than four switches, the violation timer continues from where it left off. When the accumulative violation timer reaches 45 days (not configurable), Web Tools for that switch is disabled. A message similar to Figure 2 2 displays in a telnet session or error log. NOTE: When Quiet Mode is enabled on an 8 EL or 16 EL switch with a IV_FABRIC license installed, the four switch limitation warning messages cannot be hidden. Otherwise Quiet Mode functions as described in the StorageWorks by Compaq Fabric OS Reference Guide, Part Number: AA-RQ6FA-TE. Additional Alerts If the fabric size exceeds the four switch limit, the switch experiences the following activity: In Fabric Manager and Web Tools, the switch icons in Fabric View turn yellow for every 8 EL and 16 EL installed in a fabric that exceeds the four switch limit. For example, in Web Tools the following message appears in the bottom left hand corner of the window: The Fabric has changed - - Reload / Refresh IMPORTANT: To prevent this message from reappearing, you must update to the optional Full Fabric license. Please note that removing the Ethernet connection will not eliminate this message. See the Four Switch Limitation Workarounds section in this chapter for instructions on how to purchase the Full Fabric license. The switch beacons continuously, with front panel LEDs lighting amber, similar to a firmware download. The switch stops beaconing during reconfiguration, or if the error condition no longer exists. Beaconing resumes if the error is detected again. 2 4 Fibre Channel SAN Switch 2/16 EL Installation Guide
