22 UNEDITED ABSTRACTS Assessing the furnace performance of quartz in the Si-furnace Kurt AASLY 1,* 1 Norwegian University Of Science And Technology * Corresponding Author kurt.aasly@ntnu.no In the production of silicon and ferrosilicon, lump quartz (typically mm), is used as silicon raw material. Quartz is reduced in an electric furnace with coal or charcoal as reduction material (Schei et. al, 1998). Temperatures in the furnace are typically in the range of 700 C at the charge top, reaching more than 2000 C further down in the furnace. Optimal production conditions require quartz of good thermal strength and minimal amounts of fines (<2 mm). Industrial laboratory tests are used to assess the thermal strength of the raw material, however, do not explain the causes of varying quartz properties. The present study focuses on shock heating experiments and cristobalite formation in quartz and results are compared to the industrial laboratory tests. Samples of 13 different quartz types have been shock heated to 1300 and 1500 C. Results are compared to standard industrial tests. Large differences are noted between different quartz types and between the two test methods. Previous research has indicated cristobalite formation as one of the main reasons for different furnace performance of different quartz sources (Aasly, 2008). Thus, cristobalite content will be measured by XRD and linked to furnace performance. Keywords Quartz,Cristobalite,Silicon production, thermal strength Oxygen, carbon and sulphur isotope studies in the intrusion-related Au deposits at Atud area, Egypt Amr ABDELNASSER 1,*, Mustafa KUMRAL 1 1 Istanbul Technical University, Department of Geological Engineering, Istanbul, Turkey * Corresponding Author amrkhalil@itu.edu.tr This study attempts to define the hydrothermal fluid sources that responsible for the Au mineralization at Atud area (Central Eastern Desert of Egypt), based on stable isotopic data obtained from δ 34 S of sulfide minerals and δ 13 C and δ 18 O of carbonate minerals. Detailed field study of Atud gold mine area revealed that this area composed mainly of metagabbro-diorite complex emplaced into serpentinitestalc-carbonate rocks and metasediments (metatuffs), later intruded by olivine gabbro. Atud gold mineralization is related to sulfide-bearing quartz veins as well as the hydrothermal alteration zones. The δ 34 S values of arsenopyrite range from 0.7 to 7.8 VCDT and from 8.3 to 9.5 VCDT from the altered wallrocks and quartz vein, respectively. Whereas, the 34S values of pyrite from altered wallrocks and quartz veins vary between 3.1 and 2.9 VCDT. These δ34s data show that arsenopyrite and pyrite were formed from fluids of magmatic origin with significant contamination from sulfur in surrounding metasediment rocks. Carbon and oxygen isotope values (δ 13 C PDB ; δ 18 O SMOW ) of carbonate mineral (calcite) change in range of -8.0 PDB to PDB ; SMOW, respectively. Distinctive light carbon values (negative δ 13 C isotope values) would support a meteoric origin and the positive oxygen isotope values point out effect of metasomatism. 23 Detection of hydrothermal alteration associated with intrusion related gold mineralization at Central Eastern Desert of Egypt by using ASTER-based image processing Amr ABDELNASSER 1,*, Muhittin KARAMAN 1, Mustafa KUMRAL 1, Basem ZOHEIR 2, Pär WEIHED 3 1 Istanbul Technical University, Department of Geological Engineering, Istanbul, Turkey 2 Benha University, Faculty of Science, Department of Geology, 13518, Benha, Egypt 3 Luleå University of Technology, Division of Ore Geology and Applied Geophysics, Luleå, Sweden * Corresponding Author amrkhalil@itu.edu.tr Atud gold deposit represents vein-type gold mineralization at the Arabian-Nubian Shield in North Africa, in Central Eastern Desert of Egypt. This Au mineralization was closely associated with intense hydrothermal alteration haloes along the NW-SE brittle-ductile shear zone at the mined area. The hydrothermal alteration minerals have been successfully investigated in the field as well as by petrographic studies (microscopic and electron microprobe analyses). They are represented by sericite, kaolinite, calcite and albite with chlorite and Fe-oxide and hydroxyl minerals. Also, the ore minerals associated with gold mineralization are arsenopyrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, tetrahedrite and gersdorffite-cobaltite. This work introduces applications of remote sensing mapping techniques such as spectral angle mapper (SAM) and Mixture Tuned Matched Filtering (MTMF), band ratios, and mineral index method (kaolinite and calcite index, etc) to ASTER images to detect the hydrothermal alteration minerals at Atud area. Sericitic, argillic (kaolinite), and carbonate (calcite) alterations as well as secondary iron oxides (hematite and goethite) have been successfully detected by processing of atmospherically corrected Aster data. In addition, this alteration is linear and associated within vein-type mineralization. Therefore, the information on alteration minerals provided from ASTER imagery applications are significance for mineral exploration activities. Keywords ASTER imagery, atud gold deposit, central Eastern Desert,Egypt 2

24 Quantitative mass transfer analysis during hydrothermal alteration of intrusion-related Cu-Pb-Zn mineralization in SW Kütahya, Turkey Mustafa KUMRAL 1,*, Amr ABDELNASSER 1, Demet Kiran YILDIRIM 1, Muhittin KARAMAN 1, Zeynep DONER 1, Murat BUDAKOGLU 1 1 Istanbul Technical University, Department of Geological Engineering, Istanbul, Turkey * Corresponding Author kumral@itu.edu.tr This work focus on the chemical ion exchange between wall-rock and hydrothermal fluids in Cu-Pb- Zn deposits in Miocene Eğrigöz pluton at Tavşanlı zone (SW Kütahya, Turkey) by determination of mass/volume gains and losses of chemical components as well as quantitatively mass transfer during hydrothermal alteration. This mineralization is closely associated with intense hydrothermal alteration within brecciation, quartz stockwork veining, and brittle fracturing zones representing locally vein-type endoskarn-type, controlled by NW-SE faults cut through the pluton. Ore minerals are represented by chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite, malachite, azurite, and pyrite. Geologic and petrographic observations and remote sensing applications show that three main alteration zones with gradual boundaries were observed; Zone-1; silicified/iron carbonatized alteration around ore veins and shear zone, zone-2; Argillic-silicic alteration, and zone-3; phyllic alteration. Quantitative mass transfer analysis stated that zone-1 has enrichment in SiO 2, Fe 2 O 3, MgO, Cao, Na 2 O, MnO, SO 2 and LOI with high S and Cu, zone-2 exhibit enrichment SiO 2, Fe 2 O 3, MnO, k 2 O, SO 2 and LOI with S, Cu and Pb, and zone-3 is characterized by common additions of SiO 2, Fe 2 O 3, k 2 O, SO 2 and LOI with significant enrichment of S, Cu, Zn and Pb. In addition, zone-1 has a higher mass/volume gain than zones-2 and 3. Keywords Quantitative mass transfer analysis,cu-pb-zn deposits,eğrigöz pluton, tavşanlı zone,kütahya, turkey In situ study of the metallic tantalum's thermal behavior Houria AFIR-CHIKH 1,*, Fariza SI AHMED 1, Arezki AFIR 1 1 Université Des Sciences Et De La Technologie Houari Boumedienne, Bp 32 El Alia, Alger, Algerie * Corresponding Author houriachikh@yahoo.fr Heated tantalum pellets progressively underwent reaction under continuous pumping or under controlled monoxide pressure in a graphite resistance high temperature X-ray diffractometer up to 2300 K. A thermodynamic analysis showed that this brought into play the formation of Ta 2 O, Ta 2 O 5 (low temperature modification) and Ta 2 C likely to be formed between 293 and 2300 K, in accordance with a reaction mechanism which we found to take place in four stages.
