This brochure has been made possible with the financial support of the project KOMM IN NRW 2010/2011 More Education for Brühl. A good school education and vocational training is necessary for a successful professional career in later life. Yet education costs money something which many families today simply do not have. A lack of financial means should not, however, prevent anyone from having a good education. It is for this reason that the federal government as well as the states, religious communities and numerous foundations, have established a number of programmes which aim to provide financial support with funding for school education, studies as well as vocational training and further training. This brochure offers an overview of current funding opportunities and programmes in your local area for school, studies and professional life. The brochure gives you whether you are a parent, teacher, pupil, student or professional information on qualified, supporting educational and further training measures and will help you to find the best option for you. I wish you good luck and all the best for your personal career and hope that you will be selected to benefit from one of the many funding opportunities.. Best wishes, Michael Kreuzberg Mayor 2 3
3 Funding opportunities / Scholarships for pupils School years are a time for learning, yet this should also be a happy and carefree time. Not all people, though, have the same opportunities. At school, children from poorer families often do not perform as good as their fellow pupils from better-off families. If you are in such a situation, your financial means should not have any effect on your school performance. You are certainly capable of more! Here you will find information on various funding opportunities which can help support you during your time at school. Seize this opportunity and make the most of your future. BAföG Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz Pupil BaföG (a type of grant) is a fixed sum which you can receive from the state if you go to school. This is a full grant which means that you do not have to pay it back. There are many factors that determine whether you are entitled to BaföG, as well as its total sum: the type of school, living situation, distance between home and school etc. It is recommended that you submit your application 6 to 8 weeks before the school year starts. BAföG Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz Kreisverwaltung Bergheim / Rhein-Erft-Kreis Der Landrat Amt für Ausbildungsförderung Willy-Brandt-Platz 1, Bergheim Tel Kölner Gymnasial- und Stiftungsfonds If you attend an upper level secondary school ( Gymnasium ) in Cologne you are eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Cologne Gymnasium and Endowment Fund, which helps talented pupils and students with their education and living costs. Requirements for funding: a) Pupils: in order to achieve university entrance level, funding is possible as from class 10 (in exceptional cases also earlier); grade average: 2.0. b) Students: funding depends on the individual financial and social circumstances of the applicant. Kölner Gymnasial- und Stiftungsfonds Stadtwaldgürtel 18, Köln Tel Online: Reemtsma Begabtenförderungswerk The organization can provide support if you are attending the upper school (classes 11 and 12, also junior students) or if you are studying at a German university of applied sciences or university (from the 1st semester, all subjects). Pupil funding: 130. b) Students: good study performance, excellent ability, parental income 5,400 max. Student funding: 155. ( 130 for students with completed vocational training). 4 START-Stiftung (A project of the non-profit Hertie Foundation) The START Foundation supports talented pupils with a migration background who want to complete secondary school with a higher finishing exam such as the Abitur (equivalent to A-levels) or university entry qualification. The type of school as well as the pupil s nationality, residence status or religion do not play a role in this. Important criteria: applicant s personality, dedication and performance. START funding only applies for the first education course. Applications may be submitted at any time. Ulrich Schultze Landeskoordinator START in Nordrhein-Westfalen RAA Wuppertal Gathe 6, Wuppertal Oder online unter: Tel Funding opportunities / Scholarships for students In North Rhine-Westphalia, universities are allowed to charge students tuition fees of up to 500 and a social contribution fee around 200 per semester. This has made higher education costly and many students are forced to work to finance their studies. Yet there are many funding opportunities and scholarships available which most students are unaware of. Here you will find a selection which you can benefit from during your study period. Deutsches Youth For Understanding Komitee e.v. In 2008 the German Youth For Understanding Committee established the Fund for Diversity, which offers scholarships to young people with a migration background who are in need of financial assistance. It also motivates students who want to spend a school year abroad. You can request the application documents for a part grant once you have registered online. Deutsches Youth For Understanding Komitee e.v. Averhoffstraße 10, Hamburg Postfach Tel Fax Online: State funding Study loan of the NRW Bank The study loan of the NRW Bank covers tuition fees to a maximum of 500 per semester; applications for this can be made during enrolment/after acknowledgement from the university. The grant of the loan is irrespective of income. Two years after the end of studies, the loan has to be repaid with a specific interest rate. The NRW loan is particularly cost effective for students who also receive BaföG: thanks to the capping limit, the total debt from BaföG and the study loan is limited to 1,000 per loan semester. This means that any debt above this limit does not have to be repaid! Advice hotline: (14 cents / min from German landline) 6 Opportunities for migrants 7

BAföG Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz For financial assistance during the study period, students may apply for a loan from the state. The maximum funding period is five years. The amount of BaföG depends on many factors (living circumstances, parental income, own income, monthly expenditure etc.). BaföG is granted for one year at a time and is paid in monthly instalments. The maximum BaföG sum is 670 per month. Five years after the end of the funding period, half of the loan must be repaid in instalments.
