2 Section 1: Description and Justification of Changes Describe and justify proposed changes to degree/certificate program: Five of the CRIJ (ACGM) courses in the curriculum have CJSA (WECM) duplicates that are offered as options. These options were included to accommodate high school students who took the course from instructors who did not meet the Masters credential required for ACGMltransfer courses. The CJSA courses do not readily transfer to upper division universities and do not meet the needs of the student. The Criminal Justice Advisory Committee chose to eliminate the CJSA duplicates. VIA: Dr. Loyd Poplin, Chair - Curriculum Committee I VIA: Dr. Larry Lee, Dean of Business, Professional and Technology Education FROM: Chris Black, Chair Public Safety Education ~f DATE: October 17, 2010 RE: Changes to AAS in Criminal Justice Technology Police Science Option - Effective Fall 2011 The current curriculum of the AAS in Criminal Justice Technology - Police Science Option requires the student to complete five CRIJ (ACGM) courses. For each of these CRIJ courses, there is an option of a CJSA (WECM) alternative. These CJSA alternatives were offered to accommodate High School students who were taking Tech Prep Criminal Justice courses that were being taught by High School faculty who were not Masters credentialed. We gave the High Schools a Itteach out" period where we would grant Tech Prep credit for the CJSA courses, if the faculty met the credentials requirements for WECM courses. During the "teach out" period, the High School faculty members were to pursue the proper credentials to teach CRIJ courses (Masters degree in Criminal Justice or Masters degree and 18 Graduate SCH in Criminal Justice). At this time, only one of the faculty members has met the credential requirements. Students taking Criminal Justice courses in the High Schools, taught by faculty who do not possess credentials to teach CRIJ courses, will be allowed to petition for credit by departmental exam as stated in Del Mar College policy: 2. Departmental Exams Each department chairperson sets the requirements to meet in order to take a departmental examination for credit. Generally, you are eligible to apply for this exam if you earned predominantly "A" grades in the subject in high school and scored exceptionally high on a nationally-recognized test and/or if you can demonstrate to the department chairperson significant and relevant experience in the subject area. Departmental exams will not be given for developmental courses, nor for any course in which you are presently enrolled. Arrangements for testing are made through the department chairpersons.
