On Saturday, May 14th, Brother Thompson presented a donation in the amount of $5,000 to Brother James Maxwell on behalf of the college. The Dinner Day youth participants did a marvelous job leading songs, and performing skits and presentations. Their hard work and dedication were a sight to see! This year ticket sales reached an awesome 170 guests! On the heels of the Dinner Day fundraiser was our Annual Homecoming Gospel Meeting, with James O. Maxwell as the guest speaker. We are thankful for the knowledge and truth he shared with the congregation, and our hearts are especially glad about the five souls that were added to the body of Christ that week. Lastly, on Sunday, May 22nd, it was a joy to have the SwCC Summer Tour choir present a collection of songs to the congregation. We give God all the praise for such a spirit-filled week, and for the wonderful display of God s children using their spiritual gifts to serve one another and reach out to others. 3 Eichelle Armstrong SoulFOOD Congratulations to our Graduates! Eichelle is an ASU graduate of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences where she received a Bachelors of Arts in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing. She has also obtained a Bachelors of Arts in Theatre at Herberger Institue of Design and Arts. Diamond Brittany Blackmon Congratulations to Diamond for completing High School! She has graduated from Boulder Creek High. Her plans are to attend Gateway Community College in the Fall as she works toward a career in child development. Diamond loves children of all ages and wants to make a difference in the lives of young children. Samantha Renee Callihan We are proud of Samantha for completing the 8th grade and moving on to be a freshman in High School. Samantha plans to be an active student at Boulder Creek HS, getting involved in cheerleading and making lots of new friends. She loves all things fashion, and wants to be a fashion designer. Ellie Mercedes Cano Ellie has graduated from the Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at ASU, and she is ready to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. An almost-native of Phoenix (she moved here when she was 2 years old), she enjoys dance, family and church. Celina Tatsuko Guignard Celina is a graduate of the Letters of Arts and Sciences division at ASU. She plans to pursue a Masters degree but first wants to explore the world through travels. Celina s advice to anyone entering college life is to get involved in your school. Being involved lets you stay connected, helps you make new friends, and allows you to challenge your abilities. Nicole Danae Hollins Our hats are off to Nicole who has finished the 8th grade at Estrella Mountain Art Academy, and is moving on to 9th grade at South Ridge College Prep. She enjoys playing volleyball and other sports. Matthew Messana Matthew has graduated from the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies at ASU. He studied religion with a focus in Buddhism, and hopes to use that knowledge to do missionary work in Japan. Rayford Mitchell II We are thankful that Rayford has completed the 8th grade at Garden Lakes Elementary and will be moving on to Westview HS. Rayford loves video games, basketball, and hanging with friends. He wants to be a police officer. Felisa Morehead Felisa has completed her studies at Brookeline College where she held a 4.0 grade average and achieved a Medical Assistant degree. In the near future she plans to obtain a Bachelor degree in Biology. She wants to be a Physician s Assistant. Felisa enjoys Classical music, reading and sewing. Joraya Nunez Joraya will go from Kindergarten to 1st grade at Alhambra Traditional School. She loves basketball and hip hop dance, and wants to be a teacher or cheerleader. Ashantis Lindsey Payne, Jr. What a milestone that Ashantis has graduated HS at Trevor Browne HS and will move on to Phoenix College. Ashantis has his goals set on a career in engineering. Throughout his grade school years Ashantis has been involved in a variety of activities including football, karate, and wrestling. He also loves music. Vonte Payne God has blessed Vonte to move from Atkinson Middle School to Central High. Vonte enjoys many sports and has played football and run track. He has the gift of writing poems and rhymes, and may pursue a career as an editorial writer. Jaira Lynette Skirvin An Honor Roll student, Jaira will move from 8th grade at Kyrene Middle School to 9th grade at Mountain Pointe HS. In her spare time Jaira loves to write and draw Manga. Jillian Mikayla Skirvin Congratulations to Jillian who will move from 6th grade at C.I. Waggoner Elementary to 7th grade at Kyrene Middle School. Jillian is active in her Girl Scout troop and loves to read and draw. She is looking forward to playing the saxophone in the school band. 6 SoulFOOD I m Going To Be Somebody Someday Words of this nature often express the desire of someone to make their mark in life, that is to accomplish something worthwhile. There is nothing wrong with this thought and intent, as long as we understand the meaning of an accomplishment. Cain, King Saul, and Judas, as well as many others both past and present, have made and left their mark. But, there were also Abraham, Moses, Joseph, David, Jesus and the apostles who amounted to something more than noteworthy. It is a shame to hear today what so many young people have in mind when they say that they want to be somebody. They believe that being a rock star, a movie star, a centerfold in Playboy, a star athlete and such like would make them somebody. Let me tell you about some people I know, and have known throughout the years, who have truly become somebody. Somebody was willing to leave home, family, friends and a comfortable life to go to far away places to carry the gospel to those eager to learn about God. Somebody has lived a life in preparation to becoming an elder, deacon, teacher, or preacher of the gospel. Somebody is concerned about friends, family and others who are lost and invites and brings someone to church. Somebody sews the garments for those who come to be baptized into Christ, and takes the wet garments home and washes, dries, and folds them for the next person to use. Somebody assists those who are being prepared to be baptized into Christ. Somebody prepared the Lord s supper each week and makes sure the supplies are always ready. Somebody prepares the bulletin each week with church news and a thoughtful lesson. Somebody is responsible for providing the supplies for the care and maintenance of the church. Somebody keeps the church building clean and fresh for worship. Somebody takes care of the property outside of the church building. Somebody leads the song service for worship. Somebody takes care of the contribution, deposits it in the bank, keeps records and pays the bills. Somebody serves the Lord s supper, takes up the collection and obtains the names of the visitors. Somebody writes a letter or makes a phone call to those who have visited and invites them back. Somebody prepares lessons for our Bible classes. Somebody brings flowers each week to brighten the church building. Somebody prays for the delinquent, the sick and the lost each day. Somebody brings others to church who often obey the gospel. Somebody gives cheerfully, and liberally to support the work of the church. Somebody prepares discs of the sermon as a means of spreading the gospel to others. Somebody prepares and delivers the sermons, teaches classes, performs marriages, consults with the troubled, writes articles for brotherhood publications, appears on lectureship, holds gospel meetings, and preaches the funerals. So, you see, every person has the opportunity to be somebody if he so desires. When we stand before our Lord in judgment, may we all do so as somebody who served the Lord. The answer God gave through Peter in Acts 2 was the one answer given throughout the book of Acts, instructing people in their obedience to God. Even today, that answer has not changed. If we want to be forgiven, we must repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of our sins, and He will add us to His church (Acts 2:47). Hear the Gospel: Romans 10: 17 - So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Believe the Gospel: Mark 16: 16 - He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. Repent of your sins: Acts 2: 38 - Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Confess that Jesus Christ is Lord: Romans 10: that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
