4 Wireless Applications of IPTV: Applicability, Comparisons, Drawbacks and the Future of Wireless IPTV Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is gaining recognition as a viable alternative for the delivery of video by telecommunications and cable companies. It features bandwidth efficiencies, and management; therefore, it is ideally suited for broadcast, multicast, unicast interactive and multimedia services (IMS - IP multimedia). Core networks are packet-based, however, access networks are not always packet-based. Furthermore, they are wired as either fiber-coax or fiber-twisted pair topologies. Design, construction, and maintenance costs of such topologies are exorbitant, making the IPTV deployment economically unviable, especially in underdeveloped countries and rural areas. Also, wireless applications are growing rapidly and became applicable all over new ip-based technologies with using different wireless techniques. Students should fist analyze the basics of IPTV, calculate network bandwidth to stream media over IPTV. After analyzed basics of IPTV, students should study and compare different wireless technologies to determine which wireless technology can feasible/realistic to implement. Also, students should specify the drawbacks and future of the purposed technology. IPTV TSS Fatih BODURLAR

5 Toward 3D-IPTV: Design and Implementation The purpose of this thesis/final project is studying 3-D video streams technology and compression technique. After 3-D video technique analyzed, students should study IPTV architecture, 2-D media stream over IPTV, calculate minimum network bandwidth for 3-D media stream. Finally, students should purpose a prototype implementation of 3- D video streaming over IPTV platform. IPTV TSS Fatih BODURLAR

8 Analysis of Data Distribution Process in End to End IPTV Network. Purpose of this thesis is to show the detailed steps of data transmission in IPTV network. Analysis will show the evolution of the data (video, audio, closed caption etc...) that starts from the Satellite and ends at the customers home. 9 Analysis and Comparison of Video Coding Techniques using by IPTV This thesis will include a detailed analysis of popular video coding techniques such as MPEG, VMW, Div-X, X-Vid, H.264 etc. After analysis, investigation results will be compared and advantages and disadvantages of these techniques will be explained. 11 Virtual Private LAN Services over IP/MPLS Networks Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), architecture for fast packet switching and routing, provides the designation, routing, forwarding and switching of traffic flows through the network. More specifically, MPLS has mechanisms to manage traffic flows of various granularities. MPLS is independent of the layer-2 and layer-3 protocols such as ATM and IP. MPLS provides a means to map IP addresses to simple, fixed-length labels used by different packet-forwarding and packet-switching technologies. VPN Services offer enhanced tunneling mechanisms which differs the customers traffic from internal traffic of current network. They are invisible to other customers. There is a lot of kind of Services with regard to customers needs. The goal of this thesis statement would be examining the MPLS structure, its enhanced features and Service architectures. 17 QoS Management for VoIP Networks Network QoS refers to the ability of the network to handle the traffic such that it meets the service needs of certain applications. This requires fundamental traffic handling mechanisms in the network, the ability to identify traffic that is entitled to these mechanisms and the ability to control these mechanisms. Different applications have different requirements regarding the handling of their traffic in the network. Applications generate traffic at varying rates and generally require that the network be able to carry traffic at the rate at which they generate it. In addition, applications are more or less tolerant of traffic delays in the network and of variation in traffic delay. Certain applications can tolerate some degree of traffic loss while others cannot.. In this work QoS management of VoIP networks will be analyzed. 20 Security software for NFC-enabled phones Near-Field Communication (NFC) is a short range, contactless technology used for communication between devices that are very close to each other. Products have built in NFC simplify the way in which these devices interact and in turn help users get and share information much easier, and even allow for faster payments in a secure way. This thesis will study the capabilities of the NFC mobile phones, how secure NFC technology is in real and how secure it can be made. 25 ATM versus IP/MPLS in 3G Networks Wireless technologies and fixed line technologies are important and compatible communication techniques. In the future wirekess technology will be considered to surpass the wirekine technology. 3G is among the most important wireless communication solutions. Currently it is estimated that more than 300 million people uses this technolgy. NodeB and RNC are two important building blocks of this technology. They can be connected via ATM or IP/MPLS protocols. In this thesis topic, it is requested to compare these two solutions. 26 Biomimetric Network Protocols Communication is a main problem in the modern world. Tthere are many end users but limited amount of communication media. In order to solve this problem there has been many interesting protocols suggested like: ATM, IP, Frame Relay, GSM, 3G, Wimax etc. In todays world, IP is the dominant protocol which is used in internet. There are many routing algorithms like OSPF, RIP, IS-IS, BGP which tries to figure out the most efficient path for the information transmission. Especially in the last 10 years people bacame aware that in the living beings there are incredible technologies. Especially our brain is the most complex network we have ever seen. The information rate, efficiency and bandwitdh usage is excellent. But which kinds of protocols are used in the brain, which establishes the communication of different regions in the brain. Each neuron has in average neighbour neurons. Electrical signals are transmitted between neurons in the form of chemical transmission. But how is the correct neuron chosen? This thesis will include the search of modern biological research on this topic and try to compare them with the aformentioned network protocols we use. 27 Wireless Position Estimation Algorithms Navigation and position estimation is a hot topic in todays world. Also wireless technologies are being widely used in the modern world. GPS is used for both military and civil applications. But the main problem of GPS is the time delay because this technolgy is based on the communication with the satellites. Todays, there are other kinds of protocols being developed. For example in 3G there are many NodeB stations around the mobile equipment. The mobile equipment continously communicate with the stations (so called NodeB s). Based on this local communication between the mobile equipments and radio stations there has been proposed various position estimation algorithms. What are those algorithms? Currently particle filters is a hot topic which is proposed for position estimation. In this thesis particle filter based position estimation algorithms will be proposed. 32 Implementing http digest authentication Http digest authentication is one of the authentication mechanism to authenticate a http client. It is intended to extend the basic authencation mechanism which send the user password in a clear text format. User password is send as encyrpted in digest authentication. Digest authentication is defined by RFC This project requires implementing a servlet filter which can be plugged to any web application. Servlet filter will encapsulate all the details of digest authentication and will forward the requests to the upper levels when user is authenticated. Digest authentication filter may have also pluggable modules to access the user credentials stored in web applications like DatabaseProvider, LDAPProvider. 33 Design and implementation of a SIP based Medical Event Monitoring System. The event notification systems can be used in medicine to monitor patients, their treatments, to alert the doctor in case of emergency etc. This project aims to create such a mechanism including some/all of the above use cases by using SIP protocol. SUBSCRIBE and NOTIFY Sip messages can be used for the subscription and notification of the events. You can enhance the design by considering the authentication and authorization issues to keep the system confidential. You need to use appropriate Medical Logic Modules like Arden Syntax or you can use XML messages. The doctor can be alerted by bluetooth enabled mobile device, or an incoming call. 36 Application performance monitoring Monitoring an application and taking actions proactively is an essence for critical applications. In this project, an application monitoring dashboard will be implemented. It will have 3 main modules. 1) Agents : This is the necessary software needs to be installed on the server which will be monitored. It will read the server statistics and send it to the dashboard application. Dashboard may run on another server or can be a server in the cloud hosting. It should implement a pluggable mechanism to read the server statistics. By default, it will contain modules to read server CPU, memory, disk I/O operations, but users can write new modules to read i.e application specific data. Agents will send the data over http to the data collector. 2) Data collector : It will store the data send by agents to a database. 3) Dashboard application : This is the User Interface of the performance monitoring application which can be run on any server in a cloud environment. Will be a web application. It will read the data stored by the collector, render it as graphs and display in web pages. Users will see the servers statistics as graphs in the dashboard application.
