2 conference lecturers Dr. Katie Geneva Cannon The first African-American woman ordained in the United Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Dr. Cannon is the Annie Scales Rogers Professor of Christian Ethics at Union Presbyterian Seminary. Previously Cannon served as associate professor of religion at Temple University, as associate professor of Christian social ethics at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA, and as administrative faculty at New York Theological Seminary. In March 2003, she was elected to serve a four-year term as president of the Society for the Study of Black Religion. A native of Kannapolis, NC, Cannon is the first African American woman to earn the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Union Theological Seminary (NYC). She holds a B.S. degree in Education from Barber-Scotia College (magna cum laude) and a M.Div. degree (with honors) from Johnson C. Smith Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center. In 2010, Cannon was a visiting professor at Union Theological Seminary (NYC) teaching womanist theological ethics and codes of ethics in freedom narratives. In 2005, she was the Distinguished Visiting Lilly Professor of Religion at Davidson College and the Sterling Brown Visiting Professor in Religion and African American Studies at Williams College in Williamstown, MA. Cannon is the author or co-editor of six books including Teaching Preaching: Isaac R. Clark and Black Sacred Rhetoric, Katie s Canon: Womanism and the Soul of the Black Community, Black Womanist Ethics, and the anthology, The Womanist Theological Reader (2011). She is currently working on a new manuscript, The Pounding of Soundless Heartbeats: A Womanist Critique of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Cannon is the recipient of the 2011 American Academy of Religion Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Marilyn Johns Dr. Johns (M.A.C.E. 94) joined the staff of Union Presbyterian Seminary as director of program development for The Center for Ministry and Leadership Development in June Previously, she served as project manager for a Lilly Endowment grant program at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA, where she designed, implemented, and administered an ambitious program for clergy, spouses, and congregations of fewer than 100 attendees. Johns has extensive experience as a Christian educator in three congregations and as a keynote speaker, workshop leader, and consultant. She has a Doctor of Ministry degree from Virginia Theological Seminary, where she completed a project entitled Hope for the Future of Educational Ministry in the PC(USA), and has served as a regular adjunct instructor at VTS for a class on Vital Ministry in Small Congregations.

3 Trailblazer honorees Dr. Edward D. McCreary, Jr. s (Th.M. 45; Th.D. 51) words of wisdom and inspiration continue to reach thousands as he preaches, lectures, publishes articles, and serves churches, organizations, and institutions of higher learning. Dr. McCreary received his B.A. in History from Virginia Union University and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Andover Newton Theological School. He received his Masters and Doctorate of Theology from the Union Theological Seminary of Richmond, VA, going on to do his post-doctoral studies at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Union Theological Seminary of New York, Princeton Theological Seminary, Mansfield College, Christ Church College, and the Third International Theological Seminary in Hamburg, Berlin and Munich, Germany. Beginning in 1939, Dr. McCreary served churches in Charlottesville, VA; Woburn, MA; Newport News, VA; and Richmond, VA. In 1954, he was called to pastor the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Richmond, VA, where he served for 34 years, retiring in 1988 as Pastor Emeritus. He has taught both undergraduate and graduate studies at Virginia Union University and served as chairman for the Department of Philosophy and Religion and the Division of Humanities. He has also lectured and presented workshops at a number of colleges and universities throughout the United States. Dr. McCreary served faithfully in numerous organizations including the Baptist Ministers Conference of Richmond and Vicinity; former Moderator of the Shiloh Association of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia; workshop leader for the Tuckahoe Association; life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; the Masons Silver Trowel Lodge #267; patron of the Fannie Lewis Chapter #4 of the Order of Eastern Stars; former trustee of the Independent Order of St. Luke; and former president and current chaplain of the Maggie L. Walker Historical Foundation. In addition, he has received board appointments to the State Council of Higher Education; Virginia Power Company (VEPCO); Commission on Aging; Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens; Seven Hills Hospital Authority; and Richmond Hill Ecumenical Christian Fellowship.

4 Trailblazer honorees Chaplain, Colonel Albert A. Hockaday (M.A. 80) is an honorably retired minister, a retired chaplain, a colonel in the U.S. Air Force, and pastor emeritus at Air Force Village II Protestant Church, where he served for nine years. He holds a Bachelor s degree from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC; a Master s degree in divinity and sacred theology from Yale University; and a Master of Arts degree from Union Presbyterian Seminary. Chaplain Hockaday joined the U.S. Air Force in 1968 as an Air Force chaplain, and retired in 1996 after more than 28 years as a pastor to the military and their families with the permanent rank of colonel. His military decorations consist of two Legions of Merit, three Meritorious Service medals, three Air Force Commendation medals, a Vietnam Campaign medal, and a Vietnam Service medal. Outside the military, he chose to continue his service to God, country, and community in the Presbyterian Church. In 1989, he was awarded the Distinguished Churchman Award for his outstanding ministry by the Greater San Antonio Community of Churches. In 1991, the Military Chaplains Association awarded him its Distinguished Service Award for excellence in chaplaincy and professionalism in ministry. The Presbyterian Council for Chaplains and Military Personnel presented him with its Distinguished Chaplain Award for outstanding ministry and distinguished service to the nation in In 2005, Shaw University awarded him its Distinguished Alumni Award for excellence in ministry. Rev. Paula Owens Parker (M.Div. 94) is a Presbyterian minister and the founder and former executive director of The Daughters of Zelophehad, Inc., an ecumenical Christian transitional housing program for women in crisis and their children. A Doctor of Ministry candidate at San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, CA, her topic of study is Using the Genogram as a Tool for Healing Transgenerational Trauma in the African American Church Community in Virginia. A graduate of Fisk University, Nashville, TN, and Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, VA, Rev. Parker was the recipient of the 2007 YWCA Outstanding Woman Award in Religion, The Resource Center 2007 Outstanding Christian Education Award for Ministry and Spiritual Seekers, and the 2009 Sabbatical Grant for Pastoral Leaders awarded by the Louisville Institute, a Lilly Foundation funded program that supports the work of ministry and clergy. Rev. Parker is also the co-founder of the SOZO School of Christian Healing Prayer at Richmond Hill. She has served as part-time interim pastor to Zion Hill Presbyterian Church in Amelia, VA, and Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Crewe, VA. She currently serves on the Self Development of People committee of the Presbytery of the James and worships at All Souls Presbyterian Church in Richmond, VA. She is also a retreat leader, spiritual director, and healing prayer minister.
