Ishikari Bay Bay New New Port Port Area the the ideal location for forthe Green Data Center minutes minutes from from New New Chitose ChitoseAirport via via expressway expressway km km from from downtown downtown Sapporo Sapporo (30 (30 minutes minutes by by car) car) Hokkaido Government Ishikari Subprefectural Office Ishikari City Otaru City Ishikari Bay New Port Area Shinkawa IC Sasson Expressway Route 231 Sapporo-kita IC Sapporo City Hokkaido University New Chitose Airport JR Sapporo Station 2 Metropolitan area Haneda Airport

Details of of ideal conditions for for the the establishment of of the the Green Data Center Map of land for sale by lot in the Sufficient snow to cool data center facilities Annual average snowfall (approximately 6 m) sufficient for air-conditioning Four snow dumping sites in the area Land area large enough to build multiple data centers Land area offered for sale: 432 ha Clear collateral conditions for the establishment of facilities and transfer of land rights Land lots sold by Ishikari Development Co., Ltd. a third-sector Hokkaido enterprise Utilization of natural energy (wind and solar power generation, etc.) 小 樽 市 Snow dumping site (1): 180,000 m 3 Snow dumping site (2): 450,000 m 3 Substation 1 Substation 2 Snow dumping site (3): Snow dumping site (4): 800,000 m 3 150,000 m 3 20ha 18ha 20ha Stable electricity supply Two substations in the area 石 狩 市 Secure communication routes covered by multiple communications companies Optical fiber networks provided by two leading companies Advantages from the concentration of ICT-related companies in the Sapporo area Enabling prompt layout of backup systems in emergencies Low risk of exposure to natural disasters Almost free from concerns regarding earthquakes and tsunamis 3

Establishment of of the the Green Data Center Advantages of Possibility of using the cold climate and snow/ice energy According to a simulation study by the industry-governmentacademia consortium known as the Hokkaido Green Energy Data Center Study Group (presided over by Kunikazu Tsuda of Ricoh Co., Ltd.), the amount of electricity used in cooling can be reduced by approximately 90% by establishing the data center not in Tokyo but in Sapporo, where it is possible to build a facility that incorporates an outdoor air and snow/ice cooling system. Low risk of natural disasters The area is less at risk of damage from large-scale natural disasters (earthquakes, typhoons, etc.) and thunderstorms. *No large-scale natural disasters have occurred in Ishikari for more than 100 years. Annual average temperature: Use of snow and ice Considerable reduction of cooling energy Average temperature: 17.9 Average temperature: 17.3 Cooling devices Snow/ice and the cold outside climate electricity used for cooling zero? (IT devices usable as before) Plentiful and inexpensive land It is possible to secure the large amount of land necessary for the utilization of natural energy (snow and ice, solar power generation, etc.) Contribution to the reduction of CO 2 emissions Cooling devices Average temperatures: data from a 2004 survey by the Japan Meteorological Agency Selection of the Hokkaido site best suited for the data center Of the 42 industrial complexes in Hokkaido evaluated by the study group set up to investigate site feasibility for the data center, 5 areas were investigated in detail. As a result, the was identified as the site best suited for the data center. 4

Realization of of a data data center center featuring ultra-low electricity consumption achieved by by taking taking advantage of of the the cold cold region s characteristics Annual average snowfall of approximately 6 meters ensuring sufficient snow for cooling Kansai region Annual average temperature: 17.9 Kanto region Annual average temperature: 17.3 Hokkaido Annual average temperature: snow and ice Reduction Reduction by by approximately approximately 90% 90% of of electricity electricity used used for for cooling cooling through through the the utilization utilization of of cool cool outside outside air air and and snow/ice snow/ice Annual average temperature: snow and ice Annual average snowfall: approximately 6 meters Snow dumping sites in Ishikari Accumulated snow and ice can be used to cool the server room. Conditions at a snow dumping site Research project by the study group for the utilization of snow and ice in Ishikari (at a multipurpose sports facility in Ishikari) 5

(Reference 1) 1) Effectiveness of of a data data center center with with ultra-low electricity consumption achieved by by taking taking advantage of of the the cold cold region s characteristics Cold energy unique to the Hokkaido area Winter: cold outside air direct intake of outside air water cooling using outside air and heat exchange (cooling medium) Summer: snow and ice air cooling using air holes water cooling using pipe circulation (cooling medium) Extensive reduction of cooling device operation Substantial cost reduction Considerable reduction of CO 2 emissions Dual achievement Estimation by the Technological Investigation Project of the Hokkaido GEDC Study Group Sapporo area (including Ishikari) Rate of electricity consumption reduction Electricity consumption per data center building accommodating 2,000 racks (5 kw/rack) Rate of CO 2 emission reduction Cooling with outside air + free cooling 69.0% 64.5% Cooling with outside air + free cooling + snow and ice 89.8% 89.9% The figures indicate the rate of reduction compared to general air-conditioning in Tokyo. Annual electricity consumption: reducible by approximately 31,500 MWh (approximately 31.5 million kwh) (CO 2 reduction: approximately 13,400 tons per year) (at an electricity price of 10/kWh, costs can be cut by 315 million/year) 6.3 billion reduction in operating costs per building over 20 years Reduction of electricity use in collateral facilities Air-conditioning 44% UPS power distribution 7% CPUs, memory, HDDs 32% Fans 4% Powering up / down 13% Reduction of electricity use in IT devices themselves Source: Prepared by NEC based on Powering Computer Platforms in High Efficiency Data Centers (Intel Developer Forum, Fall 2006) Of all the electricity consumed at the data center, airconditioning (i.e., cooling) accounts for the highest share. 6
