1 Basic Bank Accounts A basic bank allows you to receive money and pay bills. It can be a first step towards opening a regular current later on. With a basic bank you can: have your wages, benefits, State pension or tax credits paid directly into your ; pay in cheques for free (but remember you will have to wait a few days before the money is available for you to spend); take money out at cash machines with a cash card (this is usually free, but some cash machines make a charge); withdraw money at the Post Office ; and pay your bills by direct debit meaning you could pay less for some things especially gas, electricity or telephone. Some banks will also let you pay by standing order. Lots of banks and some building societies offer basic bank s. We have listed a selection of local banks that offer these types of in this leaflet, together with details of local branches, how to apply and what other features the s offer. We would recommend that you apply to a bank that offers the facility to open the in the branch. This is the quickest method and allows you to get your identity and documents checked in branch. You will also be able to find out your number and sort code straight away. They will also assist you in filling in a Bank Automated Crediting System (BACS) mandate so that you can receive your Housing Benefit directly to the. Additionally if claiming Housing Benefit or Council Tax benefit and you want to apply to HSBC we have an agreement that they will accept our Confirmation of Identity letter as proof of your identity and residency. This differs from their normal requirements and means that you only need to give the proof once to Thurrock.
