1 LA RAZA LAWYERS ASSOCIATION of SACRAMENTO/UNITY BAR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION 2013 APPLICATION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 30, 2013 Background and Purpose La Raza Lawyers Association (LRLA) of Sacramento is a non-profit charitable organization that was founded to support the ongoing efforts of Latino/Hispanic attorneys to address issues and areas that impact the Latino/Hispanic Community. As part of its community service mission, LRLA awards scholarships to law students who demonstrate strong ties to the Sacramento Latino/Hispanic- American community and wish to practice law in the Sacramento area. The UNITY Bar is composed of a variety of local bar associations in the Sacramento region, including LRLA of Sacramento. The UNITY Bar encourages meaningful interaction between these local bar associations. The La Raza Scholarship Committee will review all applications for the LRLA / UNITY Bar $2,000 Scholarship Award. The LRLA / UNITY Bar scholarship will be awarded at the UNITY Bar Dinner, which will take place on October 17, The winner of the scholarship is required to attend. Eligibility and Merit Criteria In order to be eligible for the scholarship, you must be currently enrolled and in good standing in your final year of law school at, or graduating in 2013 from: Lincoln Law School, Sacramento, Lorenzo Patiño School of Law, McGeorge School of Law, or King Hall School of Law. Applicants will be evaluated holistically with emphasis on the following merit criteria: 1. Intent to serve the greater Sacramento Latino/Hispanic-American community; 2. Active student participation in Latino/Hispanic-American community service projects or groups; 3. Academic achievement in law school; and 4. Financial need. Active student participation and intent to serve the greater Sacramento area can be shown by attendance at La Raza events, membership in law school affiliate groups and/or volunteering in community service projects. Application Evaluation The Scholarship Committee will evaluate each scholarship applicant and will select the scholarship recipients in its sole discretion, bound only by the

2 scholarship purposes and scholarship criteria. To facilitate the decision-making process, the Scholarship Committee may, in its discretion, require a personal interview with any or all scholarship applicants. Your name, address, address, and telephone number must be included but are not counted toward the word count. The Scholarship Committee is interested in indicia of resilience, leadership potential, and commitment to serving the Sacramento Latino/Hispanic community.. You may include information regarding your background, reasons for pursuing further education, challenges you face outside of school, legal field of interest, career goals, any special circumstances, your financial need, and any other information you would like considered by the scholarship selection committee.
