3 Welcome We are very happy to present the 2014 Fall Training Calendar. Three decades of Building Bright Futures for Children by providing technical assistance, training and developing quality improvement strategies are all based on our extensive experience promoting quality initiatives. CCI believes in quality and this helps us to provide professional development opportunities to all child care providers, teachers, caregivers, program directors, youth development coordinators, and teaching assistants. We work hard to support professionals at every stage of their careers. We recognize that training and professional development are most effective when linked to a specific program improvement plan that embraces assessment, training, mentoring, and coaching, and leads to improved child outcomes, improved program quality, and stronger communities. CCI can work with you to develop such opportunities in center based and home based settings. 5 School Age New York State School Age Credentialing Course The New York State School Age Credential is an exciting, practical professional development opportunity for school age & youth development directors & staff. If you are a school age professional committed to making a difference, this is for you! It is a competency-based program that provides the tools you need to run a well-managed quality program. Geared towards adult learners, the course includes lectures, field studies, portfolio development and one-on-one work with an advisor-totaling over 120 training hours. Topics will include supervision, the director as trainer, program development and quality improvement, child development, safety & security and introduction to the National After School Association (NAA) Standards and Accreditation System. This workshop will offer insight into how caregivers can nurture infants and toddlers socialemotional development through pre-literacy activities. Social and emotional well-being and child resiliency are linked to three social emotional indicators also called protective factors Attachment/relationships: mutual, strong relationships with important adults/ peers Initiative: use independent thought and action to learn and meet needs Self-regulation: the developing ability to recognize and express feelings, needs and learn strategies to manage behavior Participants will have the opportunity to discuss differences in temperament and engage in discussion and small group activities to learn strategies and practices that support the three protective factors in daily classroom routines and activities. 7 Early Childhood Getting the Most Out of Read Alouds: Developing Social-Emotional Well-Being through a Multi-Sensory Approach to Literacy for Preschoolers This creative and interactive workshop will provide the rationale behind the importance of developing social-emotional well-being in young children. Participants will learn to use songs, hands-on and movement activities to enhance read alouds and support social-emotional development in preschool children. We will explore our own imagination by creating social-emotional games to use along with selected read alouds. Materials will be provided. 8 New York State Health and Safety Training: Competencies to Becoming a Family or Group Family Child Care Provider Family & Group Family Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) requires all childcare providers to take a 15-hour Heath and Safety training to become licensed or registered. 9 Avoiding Professional Burn-Out Family & Group Family Participants will gain insight into how to deal with stressful and challenging situations that arise from day-to-day management of a child care program, staff, parents and children. Through guided self-assessment exercises, we will learn to identify signs of stress, know when to take time out and develop a self-care action plan. 10 Medication Administration Trainings (MAT) Health Promotion Learn the required procedures to administer medication to children who participate in your program. This training is for Licensed/Registered Child Care Providers, Preschool and School-Age Programs, and those Informal Child Care providers who care for subsidized children. The maximum capacity for all trainings is 8 people. Pre-registration is required. The MAT Course is presented by Joanne Gall, RN, over a period of two days, approximately 15 hours. Participants MUST be on time, present both days and complete a total of 8 modules, a competency demonstration test, and a comprehensive final exam in order to receive a certificate for the course. *The cost of this training includes a $90 registration fee that must be paid in advance. $100 of the remaining training fee can be paid for with a SUNY MAT Training Voucher. The balance must be paid prior to attending the training. Please bring a copy of your registration certificate/license and the S.U.N.Y. MAT Training Voucher or payment. 12 Medication Administration Training (MAT) Rebate Program Health Promotion What is the (MAT) Rebate Program? The Medication Administration Training (MAT) Rebate Program is sponsored by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), You can receive up to $100 to help pay for the classroom course through the MAT Rebate Program. You are eligible for a MAT Rebate if ALL of the following statements are true: 1. You are employed at a New York State OCFS or New York City DOHMH registered/licensed child care program; or are a legally-exempt provider, that provides publicly subsidized child care. 2. You have paid for and successfully completed the MAT course provided by an approved MAT trainer. 3. You are submitting the required application and supporting documentation to the MAT Rebate Program within 60 days from your completion date of the MAT course. Rebate applications received after 60 days will not be accepted. 4. A MAT payment has not been made on your behalf in the past 33 months. The New York City Child Care Resource and Referral Consortium (NYC CCR&R) offers Online Trainings NYC CCR&R is offering professional development opportunities through online training courses for early childhood professionals caring for infants, toddlers, pre-school and school age children. You will be able to learn at your own pace 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The training courses include 50 hours of customizable training approved by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS). The online training courses can be taken to meet annual training requirements to complete hours for those seeking a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, CDA credential renewal or in-service training. Online courses include: Setting up and outdoor play area Childhood anger and anger management Development of language Positive solutions for challenging behaviors Communicating effectively with parents Courses are affordable and financial scholarships may be available via the Educational Incentive Program (EIP). 15 Meet the Trainers Joanne Gall, RN, M.P.H., is a registered nurse, trained in public health. She serves as CCI s Health Coordinator providing Medication Administration Training and consultation in the development of Health Care Plans. She has a rich background in community health training and education of student nurses and home health aides and is also a Certified CPR & First Aid Instructor. Trained in ITERS Hannah Holland Orta, is a Program Specialist for Parent and Provider Services at CCI. She is a certified SUNY Health and Safety trainer with many years of experience in providing training technical assistance and support to family child care providers. She also has years of experience in assisting providers with the CACFP program and lesson plan writing with the Creative Curriculum Module. Cynthia Pearson, MSW, Coordinator of Parent & Provider Services, holds a degree in Social Work and is a former administrator of a child care resource and referral agency. She is a certified SUNY Health and Safety trainer and has provided training for Pre-K and family child care programs and networks. Trained in ITERS and FCCERS. Julia Travers, R.N., M.S.N., is the Program Specialist for Infant, Toddler and Early Childhood Programs at CCI. She is a Clinical Specialist in Community Health with advanced training in infant/parent mental health. She has been a consultant to Early Head Start, provided developmental screening and evaluation, coordinated an Early Intervention Program, and facilitated parent support groups. Trained in ITERS, FCCERS and DECA. Chandra Travis, has trained over 300 School Age Professionals. She was one of the original NYS School Age Credential Trainers. She is a member of the faculty of CUNY s City College a n d i s t r a i n e d i n P r o g r a m Administration Scales. Inez Robinson Chillous, MS. Ed is the Coordinator of Early Childhood Education Services at CCI. After a decade with the NYC Department of Education as a classroom teacher in Pre- K 2nd grades, Visual Arts Teacher and Literacy Coach, She returned to CCI where she worked earlier in her career. She received her MS in Literacy, Birth 6th grades from City University of New York at City College. Inez has NYS Permanent Elementary Certification, Pre- K 6 and NYS Literacy Professional Certification and Reading Recovery training from New York University. Rhonda Carloss-Smith, MS Ed, is the Associate Executive Director at CCI, where she assists in the management of the agency s staff, programs and budget, and directly supervises CCI s Parent Services Unit and Infant/Toddler Programs. She has extensive professional experience in program development, policy analysis, advocacy and early child education. Page 15

If CCI must cancel a session due to low enrolment or other factors you will be eligible for a full refund or to apply the payment to another workshop session. In the event of inclement weather on the day a scheduled training, please contact CCI at If the office is closed, the training is cancelled. Every effort will be made to reschedule any cancelled training. 4. Lateness. Latecomers will be admitted at the discretion of the trainer. For Health and Safety, MAT and CPR/First Aid Training no one will be admitted once the session has begun. 5. Certificates. Certificates of attendance will be provided to each attendee after completion of training and receipt of full payment. 17 Financial Aid Options NEW YORK STATE EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE PROGRAM (EIP) What is the Educational Incentive Program (EIP)? The Educational Incentive Program (EIP) is a scholarship program designed to assist child care providers to obtain the training and education needed to provide quality care to children. Child care providers must be caring for children in a facility regulated by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) or the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). If eligible, you can access up to $2000 of financial support. If the total cost of the workshop is not fully covered by the EIP award, you will be billed for the difference. Who can apply for an EIP Scholarship? A registered family child care provider currently caring for children A licensed group family child care provider or assistant currently caring for children A director or child care classroom staff currently caring for children in a registered school-age program A director or child care classroom staff currently caring for children in a licensed child care of Head Start center. (In New York City, staff with a permanent New York State teaching certificate is not eligible.) A director or child care classroom staff employed by the New York State Unified Court System. Eligibility is based on your employment, income and the course you choose.
