2 Purpose of Meeting To introduce you to the advantages and benefits of the AP Curriculum. To encourage students to take an AP class. To show you the wide variety of AP offerings at LBSS. Differentiate between AP & Honors

3 Research shows that students who take AP courses in high school are more likely to succeed in and graduate from college.

5 AP Course Offerings We offer a total of 24 AP courses in English, Math, Social Studies, Science, World Languages, Art, and Music. All AP faculty members are endorsed and certified to teach AP level courses.

7 Financial Advantages of AP COST PER CREDIT HOUR for IN-STATE VIRGINIA UNITVERSITES IS APPROXIMATELY $400/CREDIT HOUR* (This does not count books, fees, room and board, etc.) FCPS COST PER CREDIT HOUR FREE

8 AP SCHOLAR Take a minimum of 5 AP courses and earn a score of 3 or better on each exam and you will be awarded one of the AP Scholar Awards from the College Board. VDOE EARLY COLLEGE SCHOLAR Have a "B" average or better Be pursuing an Advanced Studies Diploma Take and complete college-level course work (i.e., Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, or dual enrollment) that will earn at least 15 transferable college credits.

10 Should your student accept the challenge of AP, they can expect more of the following then they would experience in regular or honors class: Expanded reading, writing, and critical analytical reasoning skills. Activities that foster higher order thinking and creative problem solving Scholarly research Summer reading activities/assignments Accelerated pace and greater depth of analysis. Greater academic challenge. Commitment to the writing process.

13 AP Expectations Classes are taught at the college level and comply with College Board guidelines, expectations, and timeline. Students are expected on average to spend at least 3-5 hours per week on course material. Students are expected to take the AP exam upon completion of the course. Opt-outs are not permitted.

14 AP Expectations Talk to parents, teachers, counselors, and other students who have taken the class for a realistic perspective. Consider your short and long term goals, and how taking an AP class can help you achieve them. Do you feel academically prepared to succeed in AP coursework? Think through your decision and take your commitment seriously!

15 LBSS Expectations LBSS administrative and counseling staff, as well as the AP faculty, expect you to take your commitment seriously by: Remaining in the course for the entire year! Remember, it is supposed to be ACADEMICALLY CHALLENGING AND REWARDING!

16 BEWARE FO THE FOLLOWING Taking too many AP courses for the first time Not completing the summer assignment (provides an opportunity to test the waters) Becoming overwhelmed by the work Not asking for help STUDY SKILLS: Cramming vs. Studying etc.
