Course Description The goal of this course is to provide students with the study of advanced topics in web design. Upon completion of this course, students should have a thorough knowledge of all areas of web page design. Topics include the web development process, advanced layout and design features, advanced study of scripting languages, site development with HTML editors, and web servers and databases. This course also prepares students to take the CIW Associate Design Specialist Certification. Topics to be Covered: (both semesters) Length: Prerequisites: Design Concepts Ethical & Legal Issues Project Management Portfolio Development Website Evaluation Multimedia Mark-Up & Scripting Languages HTML Editors & Scalable Vector Graphics Programs Web Servers & Databases 75 minute block (1-2semesters) Intro to Digital Technology & Digital Design II. Standardized Testing 3rd Level Course End of Pathway Assessments establish a measurement mechanism to ascertain the level of technical skill attainment on behalf of its career pathway completers. These measurements are based on a reliable assessment model linked directly to industry validated standards. Each assessment is comprised of components based on industry certifications/credentials, occupational assessments, and state licensures and state developed assessments. Students in this course will take the Web Design Specialist End of Pathway Assessment provided by CIW.

2 III. Course Goals The student will: Explore web design concepts, the current state of the web, and technologies used on the web. Examine ethical and legal issues related to web development. Demonstrate an understanding of project management, phases, the use of teams, and portfolios in web development. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate and develop a site s aesthetic qualities. Examine and apply website testing, publishing, and maintenance concepts. Demonstrate the effective use of multimedia. Explore advanced web page layout features and concepts. Identify, compare and contrast, and use various scripting and mark-up languages used on the internet. Demonstrate advanced website development with HTML editors and SVG programs. Demonstrate an understanding of the use of databases in site development. V. Project Outlines Project outlines will be provided to all students prior to the assignments. Outlines will include project descriptions, objectives, requirements, and due date. All project descriptions and rubrics can be accessed online via Schoology. VI. Rules o No drinks, food, or gum in the lab! o Phones and/or mp3 players may be used for educational purposes only at times which will be deemed appropriate by the teacher. o Please show respect to each other, teacher, time, room and equipment. o Be prepared for class. Have all supplies and visit restroom, lockers, etc. before entering class. o Students are NOT to be in the office or any other area deemed off-limits without PERMISSION. o Students will review Calhoun City Schools Acceptable Use Policy in class with the teacher and sign that they have done so. VII. Procedures o All assignments must be saved with the file name assigned by the teacher It is imperative that any work that is to be preserved must be saved. Remember that you must take responsibility for preserving the work you create in class for the development of your portfolio. VIII. Classroom Resources The Web Collection Revealed by Bishop, Shuman, & Reding. Various websites also used throughout the year. ** Ear buds/ headphones will need to be brought daily. IX. Work Ethics Studies by the American Society for Training and the US Department of Labor indicate 85% of persons who lose their jobs do so because they lack good work habits basic work ethics rather than lack appropriate job skills. Factors most often cited are tardiness and absenteeism, failure to follow

3 instructions and inability to get along with supervisors or fellow workers. To address the importance of developing a positive work ethic, the CTAE Department has implemented a system to reward students for exhibiting a positive work ethic in their classroom. The system reinforces positive behavior and eliminates negative behavior through daily assessment of the student s performance. Performance factors include attendance and tardies, work habits, and attitude toward others. Students are graded every 9 weeks with the work ethics grade counting 10% of the final average. How the grading system works: Each student starts with a 100. Students can lose up to 2 points each day for any number of work ethics violations (codes and points are attached). I will record violations in my grade book as they occur and will calculate the grade at the end of the 9 weeks. Attendance: Students must be in class to earn their points. Students who have an excused absence will earn their points for the day when the missed work is made up. No points will be given until the work is made up. Work Habits: A partial list of behaviors that will cause a reduction in the work ethics grade is attached. I will use the codes to record the inappropriate behaviors in my grade book. IX. If a student s behavior results in losing more than 2 points in one day, a discipline referral will be written.
