2 Lab 0: C/C++ Warm-Up (Due Sept 14) There will be an initial C/C++ warm-up lab (Lab 0) Use lab to figure out whether to take this class You will build a simple client-server application Client connects to server using TCP and sends it the name of a file The server looks the file name up in a designated directory and, if it exists, it streams its contents to the client The client saves the file into his own designated directory You will also add in-memory caching on the server side, which should be implemented using C++ and STL There will be no code skeletons you ll need to provide all code, including Makefile! We will post a detailed description tomorrow, Sept 7 2

7 1. The Client-Server Model Client requests responses Server wait for result request response provide service time Popular protocols between clients/servers: HTTP, HTTPS AJAX: asynchronous requests XMLRPC, SOAP: web service API requests 7
8 Server-Side Processing Initially, Web servers returned static HTML pages No processing on server, no state, no user-provided data 1994: CGI (Common Gateway Interface) Server invokes a program upon each request Program gets client data from stdin, outputs HTML to stdout Example: Listing 1 Then came a lot of server-side frameworks: Django, ASP, JSP, Ruby-on-Rails, Much more flexible and extensible than CGI Separate presentation, logic, and DB Example: Listing 2 8

22 Clients (browsers) Application Server Tier Decoupling of services is GOOD Manage Complexity using well-defined APIs BUT: remote calling overhead can be expensive! Marshaling of data, sockets, net latency, SOAP, XMLRPC don t scale that well We ll talk about some efficient RPC systems next week 22
23 Application Server Tier Clients (browsers) Hardware requirements Lots and lots and lots of memory App Servers are very memory hungry Fast CPU required, and lots of them Disk typically isn t needed (This will be an expensive machine.) 23
24 Database Tier Clients (browsers) What is this? Relational databases (distributed or not) PostgreSQL, SQLite, Oracle, MySQL, Berkeley DB Non-relational databases or distributed file systems Bigtable, Megastore, MongoDB, Hadoop Hbase, HDFS, Tradeoffs: Relational databases don t scale that well, but provide convenient interface, sound properties (e.g., strong consistency) Non-relational DBs scale better 24
25 Database Tier Clients (browsers) Hardware Requirements Entirely dependent upon application Likely to be your most expensive machine(s) Tons of memory Large disks Spindles galore RAID is useful for redundancy 25
26 Database Tier Clients (browsers) Choices: How much logic to place inside the DB? How much consistency do I need? How to partition data across machines? Spreading a dataset across multiple logical database slices in order to achieve better performance 26

Web architectures are complex But there are well-known solutions There are lots of tradeoffs and understanding the workload is key in choosing the right product to use at each layer Each layer has distinct hardware requirements and likely distinct bottlenecks Except for RAM, which is very popular What does the last observation tell us? 32

34 What is cloud computing? Computing technology in which data and/or computation are outsourced to a massive-scale, multiuser infrastructure that is managed by a third-party. Appeared gradually due to two important challenges facing the Web: Scaling Management I ll tell you the story of how it appeared, so as to help you understand what it is 34
35 Around 1995: The Scaling Challenge The Web and e-commerce were gaining traction Their challenge: how to scale? 1996 to 1997: ebay grew from 41,000 to 341,000 users! 35

How to architect the network infrastructure? How to provision a cluster to handle peak load? How to administer a huge number of computers?
