3 The Definition of School Nursing: School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self management, self advocacy, and learning. NASN 2013;
4 What does a BCSC Nurse do throughout the day? Give out bandaids and ice packs?
5 The complex role of a BCSC Nurse: The following list comes from NASN's brochure titled, "Health and Learning: The Critical Link for Academic Success" and reflects a partial description of the school nurse role: Ensures compliance with school entry health requirements such as immunizations; Provides care and case management for children with chronic health problems; Monitors security and safe administration of medications; Assures the health and safety of the school students and staff; Manages disaster preparedness and emergency service plans; Provides health education and staff wellness programs; Assures student compliance with state and local regulations related to health and safety; and Identifies school health needs and advocates for necessary resources. NASN 2013;
6 Role of the BCSC Nurse Ensures compliance with school entry health requirements such as immunizations: IC Each school must keep an immunization record for each student Gives the ISDH authority to adapt/change immunization requirements in the interest of public health. Requires HPV information to be sent to parents of 6 th grade girls Requires parent to furnish immunization records and that a student may not be permitted to attend school beyond the first day without a waiver from the school (not more than 20 days), or a written statement from the physician or local health department (delayed and schedule for comparison)
7 The complex role of the BCSC Nurse: Provides care and case management for children with chronic health conditions: Provide Individualized Health Care Plans for students with chronic health conditions: Diabetes Asthma Seizure disorders Life threatening food allergies Special Needs population (tube feedings, g-tubes, catheterizations)
8 The complex role of the BCSC Nurse: Monitors security and safe administration of medications: 9,465-the number of times a BCSC Nurse administered and OTC medication during the school year! 20,265- the number of times a BCSC Nurse administered a prescription medication during the school year! Each prescription medication is given according to the student s physician order. Each prescription medication requires a prescription medication and hold harmless release form and a physician s written order. The BCSC Nurse maintains each individual order and medication per BCSC policy.
9 The complex role of the BCSC Nurse Assures the health and safety of students and staff Total clinic visits for BCSC for the school year: 73,088! That averages out to each student enrolled at BCSC sees a nurse approximately 9 times a year!
10 The complex role of the BCSC Nurse Assures the health and safety of the school students and staff: Anaphylaxis Protocol- Stock Epi-Pen and Benadryl for any staff or student that had not been previously diagnosed with anaphylaxis or have their first time reaction while at school. Train staff: teachers, food service, transportation, coaches, and staff on Epi- Pen administration, seizure first aid, and diabetic emergencies. CPR classes for teachers and BCSC staff required to have CPR training Administer Hepatitis B vaccine series to staff Administer flu shots to BCSC staff members who wish to receive the flu vaccine during the fall/winter flu season.
11 The complex role of the BCSC Nurse Manages disaster preparedness and emergency service plans for students Participate in fire drills in each building monthly Participate in man-made disaster drill Participate in tornado drill Evaluate individual student evacuation needs (wheelchair bound students, students on crutches, etc.) Maintain AED in each building
12 The complex role of the BCSC Nurse Provides health education and staff wellness programs Educate students and staff on disease prevention and health maintenance Proper hand washing Proper Hygiene Healthy eating habits Promote positive self image Promote a Drug-free lifestyle Promote active lifestyle January Biggest Loser competition for staff each year Anne Hurd, Cardinal RN runs a program called Healthy Living Your ticket to Wellness Zumba classes for BCSC employees
13 The complex role of the BCSC Nurse Assures student compliance with state and local regulations related to health and safety Conduct vision screenings for students in grades 1, 3, 5, and 8 Report Hearing screening data Immunization reporting according to Indiana State Law Assess student health Respond to student or staff emergencies
14 The complex role of the BCSC Nurse Identifies student health needs and advocates for necessary resources Students who have financial needs: VSP program sight for students Annual BCSC Fast-Track program Local and State Resources- Hendricks County Health Department MD Wise Kingsway Care Clinic Dental clinics
15 What does a BCSC Nurse do throughout the day?
