3 Introduction The presence of qualified, available people has propelled Czech economic growth over the last 15 years. The lack of qualified, available is the central challenge of sustaining that growth for both single companies and for the country as whole. Human resource management will become the primary factor in determining how successful a company is. Managers will need to develop highly sophisticated soft skills to motivate the workforce, and developing such managers will become a key competence of good companies. Multicultural sensitivity will be necessary to adapt what has been a fairly homogen and conservative local work culture to the reality of mass imports of long-term foreign labor. Better career development and clear systems of rewards will need to be developed to ensure that talent, once obtained, is retained. Successful companies will form direct cooperation with technical schools and universities to shape the curriculum to better fit their workforce needs. As the stress on human resource management has grown, companies have begun outsourcing more of their HR related work to companies with core competencies in this area. Such outsourcing has grown rapidly beyond the traditional recruitment and training of executives and workforces into such areas as human resource strategy, assessment, and compensation systems. Trends in Manufacturing (contributed by Alpha Management) The average monthly salary in manufacturing reached CZK/891 EUR in March 2008 and recorded an annual growth of 8.8 %. Labour productivity in manufacturing dropped by 5.2 %. IT related industry pays best ( CZK), textiles are at the other end ( CZK) Trends in HR Activities within Companies (provided by Develor) Current focus of interest More than half of the respondents believe that retention, ensuring successors and recruitment of the suitable workforce present a challenge currently. Moreover, change management, management development and the question of compensation also appeared in the first six challenging matters. All these matters go hand in hand with mainly consolidation and organic expansion. That is to say, at present, as opposed to introducing systems, the focus shifts to operating them, and ensuring, developing human resources as real resources. Personnel matters receive exceptionally high priority. It may mean that there is less redundancy in terms of skilled workforce in the labor market of the respondents industry, as a result of which, retention and ensuring successors are of high priority. In addition to this, management development, and incorporating modern managerial techniques have become relevant as a significant company culture-forming element. 4 Future challenges Almost 80% of HR managers believe that their local employees will be integrated into the international circulation of parent companies. Making sure that it comes about will be one of the most essential responsibilities of HR. It also indicates at the same time that the way employees are perceived in the region and the way their professional expertise is valued is undergoing a change among the management members of parent companies. While previously, typically, it was the given country that hired foreign leaders from the parent company, in the future, countries themselves will also export leaders. HR effectiveness and its assessment also represented a high value and its contribution to organizational effectiveness. Outsourcing may be one of its tools, which may also become a responsibility of high priority in the future. Considering the current personnel-related duties, planning successors will be one of the most essential responsibilities in the future. As new elements, responsibilities related to integration/replanning will go hand in hand with mergers and acquisitions. All of the abovementioned factors indicate that the HR role will shift to a strategic supporter role in the future. In terms of improving the total organizational effectiveness, the HR will assume a greater responsibility along with scope of action and the present HR professionals will lead the change in case of mergers. While in the past, they used to be the ones who took over the knowhow, it is quite likely that they will become providers in the course of a merger. On the whole, while previously it was adapting and developing systems, currently it is ensuring and retaining successors and in the future it will be entering the international circulation and the strategic HR Supporter role which present the greatest challenges. Trends in Workforce Expectations of Managers (Krauthammer) In the core areas of management behaviour that were surveyed, amongst the biggest gaps between the expectations of employees and reality were the following: 95% would like their manager to analyse their task problems together with them, 41% experience this. 86% would like their manager to create the right context prior to implementing a decision, this is the case 42% of the time. 82% would like their manager to listen to their ideas, and encourage them to continue, 56% experience this. On the other hand, managers seem to be closer in meeting the expectations of their employees in the following areas: 94% would expect their manager to spontaneously admit their mistakes, and 69% actually do this. 90% would like to be fully involved in the definition of their development goals, and this is the case 68% of the time. 83% would expect their manager to arbitrate conflicts, and 65% of the time this indeed happens. for more information about advertising contact us at

5 Trends in Management Education (contributed by CMC Celakovice) There is a growing number of MBA programs available in the, as well as in Central and Eastern Europe. When navigating this large pool of MBA programs, there are at least two important indicators of quality and recognition: accreditation and rankings. The most rigorous and prestigious international accrediting agency that gives MBA programs credentials worldwide is AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). The most highly regarded rankings are those published by BusinessWeek, Financial Times, US News & World Report and Wall Street Journal. Each of the rankings uses a different methodology reflecting the opinions of the alumni, international recruiters, or program administrators, among other data that is collected. There is a growing demand among working professionals for part-time programs that allow them to earn the degree while continuing to work. Unique among them are the Executive MBA programs, specially designed for top executives in senior management positions or with senior management potential. Another important aspect of an MBA program is the diversity of the class in terms of nationality, education, industry or functional areas represented. The classes consist of representatives of large multinational companies, small firms and start-ups, as well as students from the public sector. This diversity enriches the learning process and fosters an environment of exchange of opinions and experiences among the students.
