2 NATIONAL LEAGUE FOR NURSING (NLN) PRE-ADMISSION EXAM (PAX-RN and PAX-PN) STUDENTS WILL REGISTER AND PAY ON-LINE AT Instructions: 1. Log on to and create an account. 2. Select Registration>Registration Store>Register by Location and follow prompts to pay $40 for the appropriate exam PAX-RN or PAX-PN. 3. There is a $15 fee to change test dates once registered. No refund 48 hours prior to exam. 4. All further communication is done through the NLN testing services. A study guide can be purchased online from the NLN.org. At this link The MATC library also has a bank of Occupation Practice Tests for Pre Nursing. Go to and select Learning Express (test prep) 5. If you need assistance call NLN Customer Service at or by at customerhelp@nln.org. 6. Exams are taken in room H126 every other Friday from 12:30-4:00. The National League for Nursing Pre-Admission Examination (NLN PAX) is a standardized entrance exam for potential nursing students who seek admittance into nursing schools nationwide. The NLN PAX RN and PN comprises three main areas: Verbal skills, which consists of both word knowledge and reading comprehension; Mathematics, which includes basic calculations, word problems, and incorporates algebra, geometry, conversions, graphs, and applied mathematics; and Science, which examines general biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. The NLN PAX-PN includes the above content as well as a section on health and first aid. Each three sections consist of all multiple-choice questions and include experimental items for the purpose of future test development. Answers to these questions are not counted in the scoring. There are 80 Verbal questions, 54 Math questions and 80 Science questions. Each exam is limited to one hour. To arrange special accommodations contact the MATC Student Accommodation Services in room C219, Downtown Campus Arrangements must be made three weeks prior to testing date. 2

3 MATC exam guidelines: Students are allowed to take the same exam twice, but must wait six months between exam dates. Students can take the PAX RN exam and PAX PN exam within six months because they are two different exams. The PAX RN examinees can petition for the ADN program only. PAX PN examinees can petition for the LPN program only. See counselor if you change your program. Exam cannot score below 100. 4 Specific Criteria and info for the HP-A2 Exam If you would like to take this exam again, you must: Wait 3 months to retake the exam. Take the exam in its entirety (we cannot give portions of the exam). Pay for the entire exam $34.00 (subject to change). How do I obtain my test scores? Test scores will be available to students immediately following the exam. The college will also have access to the test scores. Students may access their scores and remediate through their online Evolve account. A copy of the report of pre-admission test scores must be submitted with the student s petition for the desired Allied Health program. What do my test scores mean? Exam scores are reviewed as one criterion in the petition selection process. Scores are used to determine students academic preparedness for selected Allied Health programs. What content areas are included in the exam? MATH 60 items; 75 minutes Basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures, and general math facts used in calculating drug dosages and solutions. READING COMPREHENSION 47 items; 60 minutes Health-related reading scenarios that measure reading comprehension. Identify the main idea, find meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, and making logical inferences. GRAMMAR 60 items; 60 minutes Contains basic grammar, including parts of speech, important terms and their uses, commonly occurring grammatical errors, etc. 4

5 Evolve Admission Assessment (HP - A2) & LPN-RN Progression FAQ's & Directions When do I take the pre-admission exam? The HP-A2 and LPN - RN pre-admission exams are taken prior to petitioning for selected MATC Allied Health and Nursing programs. How much does the exam cost? The cost of the HP-A2 pre-admission exam is $34.00 /LPN-RN $41.00(subject to change). The examination fee is the responsibility of the student and is paid directly to Evolve. Test purchase available two weeks before testing date. Closed 24 hours before testing date. How do I register and purchase the HP-A2 & LPN-RN Exam? See pages 6-10 You must bring your paid receipt and MATC Student ID with you to H126 on the test date. When are the testing dates? See dates on page 1 of this document. Where is the testing place? 6 Procedure for registering and purchasing the HP-A2 & LPN-RN exam 1. Go to (If you have an Evolve account go to step 5) 2. Select Student Site 3. Select Join Evolve Communities 6

7 4. Fill out information. Evolve will generate a username and password for you. You will be able to change your password within your Evolve Profile at any time, but not your username. 5. Go to Select the "Purchase Evolve Exam" for your exam for your testing date or retrieve your exam s Product ID. The link is available on the Friday, two weeks prior to the exam date and will close 24 hours before the exam or when the exam is sold out, whichever comes first. (Subject to change) * January 11th, 2013 HP A2 Exam will be available to purchase on Friday, December 21, * April 19 th, 2013 HP-A2 Exam will be available to purchase on Monday, April 8 th, 2013 Only one exam will be available to purchase. You may want to take the exam during non-peak times (April July) as we anticipate exams selling out closer to petitioning window deadlines. 7

8 6. The exam link will take you to the Evolve Elsevier website. Log in with your Evolve username and password, then select Register for a HESI exam 7. Continue to Register for Exam. 8

9 8. Your Exam Registration is complete but you need to return to your Evolve home page to finish payment by Clicking the My Exams & Remediation link under HESI Testing and Remediation. Follow exam payment. 9
