1 Fall 2013 Professional Service Hours Log Date Meeting / Event Speakers(s) Hours Summary Foothill College Clinic Observation #1 3 I was allowed to observe various procedures performed by the second year dental hygiene students. These duties include infection control, processing of radiographs, periodontal probing, and charting Foothill College Alumni Day & Women's Health Foothill College Student Chapter Meeting ADHA, CDHA, SCVDHA, PDHA Foothill College Zila Katie O'Hanlan, MD 4 Dr. Hanlan discussed the importance of dental and gynecological health and their relation to overall health. She touched on the topics of proper screening and the importance of early detection in response to cancer. Important screenings for women include pap smears, mammograms, colonoscopies, blood pressure, cholesterol, and dental exams. *Susan Lopez, RDH, BS. CDHA Past President *Sue Treleaven, RDH, BS. President SCVDHA *Diana Trang, RDH President PDHA *Lisa Okamoto, RDH 2 Many opportunities were discussed including Oral Health Scholarships and possibilities of obtaining a Masters of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from UCSF. After graduation CDHA continuing education courses are available along the Peninsula. We learned of the advantages of being a part of different dental hygiene components. Lauren Pieretti 1 Lauren introduced the electric toothbrush called Rotadent. The Rotadent's best features are the tapered brush heads useful for individuals with braces. Lauren also discussed Vizlite Plus, a chemiluminescent product used in the detection of oral cancer.

2 Foothill College Henry Schein Oral Cancer Foothill College Clinic Observation #2 *Stacy Pruitt *Brad 1 Stacy and Brad introduced the Identafi fluorescent light system in the use of oral cancer detection. The white light is used for tissue visualization. A fluorescent violet light is used for stronger contrast of abnormal tissue. A green light is used to evaluate vascularity. 3 During this observation I was able to watch students perform different injection blocks as well as give patient's at home oral hygiene instructions. I was also able to watch assessment instrumentation skills such as probing Foothill College Henry Schein OSHA Made Easy Dr. Reyes Caoili's Dental Office San Francisco, CA Foothill College Colgate Dentifrices Foothill College Crest Oral B Stacy Pruitt 1 Stacy was very knowledgeable in educating my peers and I on basic infection control standards required by law. She reviewed OSHA guidelines and discussed the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). GHS is a way of standardizing infection control guidelines and warning labels on dental packaging. Ray Caoili, DDS & Kimberly Liao, DDS Jorge E Rojas DDS, OS 3 For my online class I observed Dr. Liao perform various dental procedures such as extractions, crown preparations, and cleanings. I also watched the RDA's take radiographs. 1 Dr. Rojas further educated my peers and I on the development of gingivitis and the progression of periodontal disease. He also emphasized the importance of using clinical expertise, evidence based dentistry, and patients' needs & preferences in making the best choices for future patients. Andrea Molakides 1 The Crest Oral B lunch and learn emphasized using evidence based decision making, research evidence, and clinical expertise in helping patients choose the appropriate oral hygiene product appropriate for each individual. Namsa, DC, RDH, RDA, CDA 2 Dr. Namsa is both a practicing chiropractor and Registered Dental Hygienist. Her lecture included personal preventative care in preventing injuries related to dental work. She spoke on preventing musculoskeletal conditions, joint disease, and pinched nerves Foothill College Premier Dental Products Foothill College Clinic Observation Jennifer Yuen 1 Jennifer spoke of the importance of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) in enamel therapy. ACP is recommended for patients at high risk of dental caries. ACP has high solubility and is delivered immediately to areas of demineraliztion. 3 From my clinic observation, I learned the importance of using proper instrumentation techniques from the 2nd year Hygiene students. I also learned the importance of linking the assessment exam findings into the oral hygiene instructions and patient education Foothill College Tepe Scottie Chapman, RDH 1 Scottie spoke of the factors affecting patient compliance and the importance of educating patients about the appropriate hygiene aids suited for the patient's needs. She discussed various Tepe products including interdental aids and ergonomic toothbrushes.

4 Foothill College Sensodyne Foothill College Organizations Board of Directors (OBD) Meeting Foothill College GC America Foothill College Premier Dental Products Northern CA Regional Student Conference Concord, CA Carol 1 From this lunch and learn I learned about dentinal hypersensitivity. I learned about the differences in the active ingredients of Sensodyne products. Sensodyne repair and protect toothpaste is supported by scientific research in repairing enamel up to 5 microns with prolonged used. Foothill College 1 From this meeting I learned about events hosted by different clubs at Foothill College. I also learned about the process of forming official clubs on campus and how clubs get school funding for various on campus activities. Vicki 1 During this lunch and learn, I learned about MI paste and its appropriate uses for sensitivity. I also learned about GC America's dry mouth gel which is recommended for patients with dry mouth. I learned about recaldent and its functions in remineralization and desensitization. Jennifer Yuen 1 Jennifer discussed the topic of professional tooth whitening. She briefly discussed the differences in concentration of carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide often found in whitening gels. Jennifer mentioned how each component is broken down. Jennifer also presented a take home whitening treatment plan for patients. Kelli Swanson Jaeks, MA, RDH 4.5 Kelli spoke about the many possibilities that the dental hygiene profession has in store for current students. She spoke of the many opportunities provided by the CDHA and the ADHA. Kelli discussed the meaning of local components and the resources they serve for dental hygiene students. 5 Spring 2014 Professional Service Hours Log Date Meeting / Event Speakers(s) Hours Summary Foothill College Noritake Grace Bennet 1 Grace introduced desensitizing products such as the teethmate desensitizer with active ingredients containing TCP (Treta Calcium Phosphate) and DCP (Dicalcium Phospahte). She also compared the use of various fluoride varnishes & toothpastes to be used as cervical desensitizers Foothill College Chapter Meeting Foothill College Clinic Observation Foothill College Waterpik Foothill College Johnson & Johnson Carol Danaher, MPH, RD 2.5 Carol presented a seminar on Child Health and Feeding Practices focusing on proper nutrition and feeding habits busy parents should practice. She spoke of ways to get children to eat despite their selectiveness. She discussed eating habits such as eating together as a family to help eliminate the selective patterns of children. 3 From my clinic observation, I learned the importance of using proper instrumentation techniques from the 2nd year Hygiene students. I also learned the importance of explaining to patients that gingivitis is reversible however periodontal disease is not reversible. Dayna Hashimoto 1 Dayna spoke of the effectiveness of the Waterpik. She presented various styles and designs of Waterpik products. Waterpik is a great product for patients with orthodontic retainers and for perio maintenance patients. Scott Peterson 1 Scott presented on the various products offered by Johnson & Johnson such as the different types of reach floss and different Listerine mouth rinses. He presented on the efficacy of the products and scientific research presented on the effectiveness of Listerine.

6 Foothill College Organizations Board of Directors (OBD) Meeting Foothill College American Eagle Santa Clara Valley Dental Hygienists Association (SCVDHA) Component Meeting San Jose, CA Ronald Mc Donald House Clinic Van- Clinic Observation Sunnyvale, CA Foothill College 1 From this meeting I learned about events hosted by several clubs at Foothill College. I learned about the process of forming official clubs on campus and club funding. The dental hygiene club announced our low cost or free cleanings provided at the dental hygiene clinic. Mary Fadhi 1 During this lunch and learn, Mary presented on the new American Eagle XP technology. The XP golden tipped curettes are treated with a patented process that hardens the stainless steel, and then encapsulates the steel with a diamond like layer. This makes an edge that will last months without sharpening. Theresa Guinasso, RDH & Cathy Draper, RDH 2 During the local component meeting we discussed the schedule of events including the Student House of Representatives (SHOR) to be held at the 2014 CDHA House of Delegates. We discussed the Proposed by Laws (PBY) and Proposed Resolutions (PR) that were to be voted on. Reference committees and tabulating of votes was discussed. 3 During this observation I watched the dentist, RDA, and second year student LC work at the clinic van. LC did a wonderful job scaling her patient s teeth and provided them with oral hygiene instructions that were patient centered California Dental Hygienists Association House of Delegates (HOD) Sacramento, CA 1 st SHOR, 1 st House, 2 nd SHOR, CDHA President s Luncheon, Aaron Read CDHA Legislative Associate, 2 nd House, Teller s Report & Reference Committee Reports 21 It was an honor to be sponsored by the SCVDHA component to represent Foothill College During the CDHA 2014 House of Delegates. It was empowering to see how each individual and each dental hygiene component has the voice and power to make changes that shape the dental hygiene profession. It was amazing to see so many educators in one room mentoring the DH students in getting them involved with the legislative process. It was thrilling to sit on the house floor to watch as testimonials were cast and to watch voting take place.

7 Foothill College Hu Freidy Tess Moylan 1 Tess came with an array of Hu Freidy hand instruments for the class to try. She also introduced the Piezon Master scaler as wells as various ultrasonic scaler tips with rotational technology. Total hours: 37.5 Cumulative hours: Fall 2014 Professional Service Hours Log Date Meeting / Event Speakers(s) Hours Summary CDA Convention- Moscone Convention Center San Francisco, CA 7 I volunteered to work at the Crest Oral B booth at the CDA convention. I helped hand out Oral B products and discussed the benefits of the new Sensi Repair toothpaste with stabilized stannous fluoride Alumni Day Foothill College Continuing Education Los Altos, CA Foothill College Henry Schein Oral Cancer Kate O'Hanlan, MD 3 The guest speakers presented on hot topics in health and oral hygiene. Dr. O Hanlan and her colleague primarily focused on hormones, bones, & health, HPV and oral cancer. Stacy Pruitt Kevin McBee 1 Stacy and Kevin introduced the Identafi fluorescent light system in the use of oral cancer detection. They also introduced the Precise SHP Diode Laser System which can be used for crown lengthening, gingivectomies, curettage, frenectomy, teeth whitening, TMJ pain relief.

8 Foothill College Student Chapter Meething Foothill College Colgate Dentifrices Foothill College Henry Schein Dick Gregory, DDS 3 Dr. Gregory presented on the Apple Tree Dental network of dental clinics and mobile vans coming soon to Redwood City, CA. Apple Tree is a nonprofit dental organization dedicated to bringing dental care to people who otherwise would be without. Their mission is to improve oral health in the lives of people with special access needs who face barriers to care. Jorge E Rojas DDS, OS 1 Dr. Rojas educated my peers and I on the development of gingivitis and the progression of periodontal disease. He also emphasized the importance of triclosan copolymer toothpaste in the management of periodontal disease. He discussed the anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory actions of triclosan. Stacy Pruitt 1 Stacy talked about the importance of good ergonomics as a dental hygienist in order to extend the length of one s career. She stated that with poor ergonomics, you will feel the effects of musculoskeletal disorders long before they are fully developed and severe. Therefore, working ergonomically, taking stretch breaks, and strengthening the body can help prevent on the job injuries. Total hours: 16 Cumulative hours: 126.5

9 Winter 2015 Professional Service Hours Log Date Meeting / Event Speakers(s) Hours Summary Foothill College Premier Dental Products Jennifer Yuen 1 Jennifer spoke of the importance of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) in enamel therapy. ACP is recommended for patients at high risk of dental caries. She presented on the topic of caries susceptibility and CAMBRA Foothill College ADHA Student Chapter Meeting Foothill College Johnson & Johnson Foothill College Zila Foothill College American Eagle Instruments Dr. Eric Wu 2 Dr. Wu presented on the topic of Digital Orthodontics and running a green practice. He spoke on new technologies used in his orthodontic practice. Some technologies include digital printing of study models, itero digital scanner, Lythos digital scanner, Damon system, Acceledent, and Propel. Scott Peterson 1 Scott presented on the scientific evidence that rinsing with Listerine after brushing and flossing greatly reduces gingivitis. He also presented on the many types of floss available that are now Listerine brand. Andrew Aradi 1 Andrew spoke about the Rotadent and also about laser technology. He spoke of laser bacterial reduction (LBR) used in periodontal debridement. The benefits of LBR include softening of the calculus deposit, reduction of bacteria in the pocket, and a reduction of bacteria entering the bloodstream. Mary Fadhl 1 Mary spoke about the new XP technology and the strength and durability of the steel the instruments are made from. She introduced the double Gracey technology which allows the clinician to maneuver between mesial and distal surfaces without switching or flipping instruments.

10 Foothill College Waterpik Northern CA Student Regional Conference Concord, CA Dayna Hashimoto 1 Dayna spoke on the effectiveness of the Waterpik. I learned that level 6 is the most effective setting for plaque removal when using the countertop model of the Waterpik. The Waterpik is a great device for patients with periodontal disease and braces. Laura Birchett 5 Laura spoke about the various ways of networking to find a job as a future RDH. She spoke of various internet resources that could aid in finding a job including LinkedIn, Dental Post, and the ADHA website. During this conference I also had the opportunity to network with other students from other dental hygiene schools throughout northern California. Total hours: 12 Cumulative hours: Spring 2015 Professional Service Hours Log Date Meeting / Event Speakers(s) Hours Foothill College Premier Dental Products Summary Jennifer Yuen 1 Jennifer spoke discussed the importance of the product Enamelon and its positive effects on dental health. Enamelon helps prevent caries, gingivitis, and treat sensitivity. This product combines stabilized stannous fluoride and ACP technology Foothill College Dr. Behrouz Farsi 1 Dr. Farsi spoke about the aspects that affect TMD issues primarily stress. Dr. Farsi talked about various techniques to use in minimizing TMJ disorders including heat therapy, hypnosis and psychotherapy, as well as seeing a chiropractor.

Jessee, DDS Amos S. Deinard, MD, MPH Marniasha Ginsberg, BA, Amos S. Deinard, MD, MPH Sean Burke, JD 3 Jerry Young spoke about being an ambassador and volunteer at the local VA and Stanford Hospital and Clinics. He spoke of his life experiences of being a cancer survivor and his belief in early detection and prevention. Karine Strickland the CDHA President spoke about what the CDHA can do for new graduates as they enter the dental hygiene profession. She also spoke about her experiences as and RDHAP. 2 I complete a CE course on the topic of Child Abuse and Neglect: Implications for the Dental Professional. From this CE course I learned about the importance of recognizing oral manifestations of child abuse. I learned about the importance of getting separate accounts of the incidence from the child and the abuser. 1 I completed a CE course on the topic of Intimate Partner Violence and Elder Maltreatment: Implications for the Dental Professional. From this CE course I learned about the importance of recognizing signs of elder abuse as well as the oral manifestations of intimate partner abuse. Sarah 1 Sarah spoke about the company Dental Temps and how the company can aid new graduates in finding a dental hygiene job. Sarah introduced their website and informed us how to keep our online calendars updated to aid in networking. Vicki 1 Vicki talked about MI paste plus and its benefits on dentinal hypersensitivity. I learned about GC America's dry mouth gel which is recommended for patients with dry mouth. I was reminded that recaldent and functions in remineralization and desensitization.

12 Foothill College Isolite Systems Frank Walker 1 Frank talked about the benefits of the Isolite system during dental care. Their product provides better isolation and suctioning for preventative and restorative procedures such as sealants and fillings. Total hours: 11 Cumulative Hours: 149.5
