7 No previous degree? Students without the equivalent of an Australian Bachelor degree are able to enter via a Graduate Certificate in the same specialisation as long as they have at least seven years full-time work experience. Upon successful completion of the first four relevant courses, and provided they meet the entry requirements, students can upgrade to the Master s program with full credit. 1. Graduate Certificate This short program covers the fundamentals of a particular discipline and can be used to broaden the skills and knowledge already gained from an undergraduate degree, or to develop your vocational skills in a new area. It is suitable for those who may not necessarily have prior tertiary study but who have completed some post-secondary study or relevant work experience. All work experience must be approved by the Executive Dean. Full-time or part-time? Part-time study options are available for all our Master s degrees. Here we explain the time commitments involved in each option. Choose the right program for you Once you have decided to commit to postgraduate study, the next step is to select the right program. To help you choose, answer the three key questions and learn more about the different qualifications and study options. The The 3 levels key of questions study 1. What is the most appropriate degree? On pages 14 to 31 you will find details of the different Master s degrees available at UQ Business School, as well as some alternative options. To help you make your decision, check the list of courses the program includes, and any options to specialise in a particular area. 2. Do I meet the entry requirements? To be eligible for the Master s program, you will need a relevant Bachelor degree and, in some cases, work experience in an applicable field at a supervisory or management level. However if you don t have a previous degree, the Graduate Certificate can provide an alternative entry point. 3. How long can I take out of the workforce? The Master s program takes 1.5 to 2 years of full-time study. If 6 months full-time (or part-time equivalent) Ideal for those without a degree Can be used as a stepping stone to a Master s 2. Master s degree A Master s degree is the most popular choice for postgraduate students. The program takes 1.5 to 2 years of full-time study, though part-time options are available for Australian students. A previous degree is required and, in some cases, relevant work experience in an applicable field at a management or supervisory level. However, while a Master s remains the ideal choice for most professionals, for those without a degree or unable to take sufficient time out of the workforce, Graduate Certificate options are available which can act as a stepping stone to a Master s degree years full-time (or part-time equivalent) The ultimate choice Recognised and respected worldwide Full-time The standard full-time load for a program is 8 units per semester - this usually means 4 courses worth 2 units each per semester. Full-time study is defined as 75% or more of the standard full-time load for a program, in other words, at least 6 units per semester, or 3-4 courses, for most programs. International students must be enrolled in 8 units per semester. It is estimated that for each course a student would have approximately 3-5 contact hours in lectures and tutorials, and would also need to do additional hours of study. Part-time Australian students can study part-time - usually 1 to 2 courses per semester. In some cases, classes are scheduled multiple times per week and students can choose day or evening classes. This does not occur in all programs. If you intend to study solely in the evenings, please check the availability and timing of classes. you are unable to commit to this period, then consider taking one of the two shorter qualifications and upgrading at a later date. Australian students also have the option of part-time study. UQ BUSINESS SCHOOL MASTERS PROGRAMS 12 UQ BUSINESS SCHOOL MASTERS PROGRAMS 13
