4 CULTURE & HISTORY The name Breda descends from a contraction of the Brede (wide) Aa.This is the place where two rivers, the Mark and the Aa, flow together. In the year 1252 Breda obtained its municipal rights, and at the beginning of the 14th century Breda was walled in. Also, in the fourteenth century the city was surrounded with mouts, so called singels. Around the city you can still find them. All the streets surrounding the city were laid in an oval shape, which is a notice able sign for old fortified cities. In the city centre there are a lot of monuments, but there is one particular that makes Breda recognisable from a great distance and that is De Grote or Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk. This beautiful church from the 15th century can be admired from almost every point in Breda. Between 1995 and 1997 the beauty of the church was hidden from the public, it took almost three years to restore the inside and the outside of the church. The so-called Spanjaardsgat flanked by two heptagonal towers reminds visitors of the time Breda was in hands of the Spaniards. The Castle of Breda shows the historical relation between Breda and the House of Oranje Nassau. In 1198 the castle was a fortress. During the centuries many changes have been made to the castle. Since 1828 the Royal Military Academy (KMA) has the castle in use. Next to the Castle of Breda you will find the city park Valkenberg. Until 1812 this park was part of the castle and only accessible for the Heeren van Breda. From origin, the park was a forest, with high trees. In the 17th century this changed, when the forest was transformed into a park with a more French style. In 1995 the park was renovated. All park pathways were laid, bushes and shrubberies were 2

5 moved and new lighting was installed. In the historical city centre lies the peaceful Beguinage. Until 1990 the court was inhabited by beguines, the statue in the garden still reminds of them (a replica of this statue is for sale at the VVV). In the herb garden you will find hundreds of different herbs. The Catharinastraat, where the Beguinage is situated, has undergone many changes in its long history, yet it has been able to keep its grandeur. For example, the stately Huis van Wijngaerde at number 9 is worth a visit. We have mentioned the characteristic combination of rich history and high-principled modern architecture in Breda. For instance, you will find the Barones, no, not a noble lady, but an indoor shopping mall in the heart of Breda, and the trendy shopping centre t Sas, right next to the medieval Grote Markt. Breda also possesses buildings of the modern architect Hertzberger: the everywhere praised Chassé Theatre and the library/school of music Nieuwe Veste.The tasteful combination of old and modern art can also be admired in Breda s Museum, situated in former military barracks. Another fine piece of architectural work is the pop stage the Mezz, and not to be forgotten, the Holland Casino, the biggest casino in the west of Europe.This casino is situated in a magnificently rebuilt monastery in the centre of Breda.The Graphic Design Museum Beyerd Breda is the only museum in the world totally dedicated to graphic design. Apart from its history and its culture Breda is, above all, known for its kind hearted burgundian atmosphere which is characteristic for all of the older, southern cities, where one knows how to enjoy life. 9 NATURE AND WATERRECREATION Forests Only few large cities in the Netherlands are surrounded by as many forests and other scenic areas as Breda is.those who want to exchange the noise of the city for the peacefulness of the countryside for a while, can choose from numerous possibilities in the direct vicinity of Breda, such as boswachterijen Mastbos, Liesbos, Ulvenhoutse Bos, Chaam, Strijbeek and Dorst. A choice can be made of several city walks or beautiful walks through the forests.the forest is clearly marked by Staatsbosbeheer and shows routes with several distances that can be walked. From 2,5 km to 7 km. In Breda and the surroundings a network of walking routes has been made.walkers can go from junction to junction. Every junction has its own number on a tourist-map (available at the tourist office), walkers can easily compose their own routes. 10 Historische Kilometer, meet the old and new Breda.The itinerary will lead you past beautiful sights such as the Breda Castle, the Spanjaardsgat, the Grote Kerk, the Beguinage, the Synagoge, the Waalse Kerk and the Chassé Theatre.This thematic itinerary is also available in an English/French/Germain version at 3,50 and in Spanish and Italian 1,50. CYCLING The Breda region boasts numerous forests and other scenic areas where a network of metalled cycle tracks makes cycling great fun. Most unmetalled forest paths are also open to cyclists.the best thing to do if you plan to go cycling is to call on the tourist office first, where staff can help you choose a suitable route.also for cyclists there is a junction-system to compose your own route (see hiking). 12 GOING OUT & PLEASURE Night life Breda has a lively nightlife that is concentrated around de Grote Markt, the Haven and the Havermarkt. Here you will find cosy cafés, pleasant bars, dancings and amusement centres.the Chassé Theatre is a very modern theatre. Under it s curving roof there are three theatre scenes and three cinemas. Next to the Chassé Theatre you will find the Holland Casino Breda, the largest casino in the west of Europe, which is situated in a magnificently restored monastery. In most parts of the Breda inner city parking fees are due between 9.00 a.m. and p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and on Sunday shopping days between 1.00 and 6.00 p.m. If you park in a paid parking zone and fail to pay the (entire) parking fee, you run the risk of being fined. Illegal parking. If you park in violation of traffic regulations, you can also be fined. Illegally dubbelparked cars that constitute a danger or obstruct traffic will be towed away.this applies in particular to cycle lanes, pedestrian crossings and no-stopping zones.
