MIAD STUDENT HOUSING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. Who is required to live in the residence hall? MIAD requires all full-time freshman and sophomore students to live at Two50Two, unless the student meets one of the following criteria: living with parents within 45 miles of campus; is at least 21 years of age; is married; is a custodial parent; or has special needs which cannot be met at Two50Two. The residence hall has accommodations for 300 students plus the RA s and the Residence Hall Director. In addition to providing critical academic and artistic help, lifelong friendships will develop with students you meet in the dorm. The challenges of group living, and in particular interaction with others different from us, enhance the kind and quality of your education at MIAD. Q. How far away is the residence hall from MIAD's main facility? Directly across the street. Q. How is the residence hall supervised? There are two Resident Assistants (RA's) on each residential floor. The RA s are fulltime, upper-class students. The RA s are supervised by the full-time professional Residence Hall Director who lives in an apartment on the second floor. There is also a full-time housekeeper for the public areas of the building. During business hours the dorm office is staffed by the Two50Two management team who will be able to help you with lease issues, rent payments and physical facility issues. Q. Does the residence hall close during breaks in the academic calendar? No the dorm is open continuously from the first day of orientation through the end of the academic year. Q. How are roommate assignments made? All room assignments are based on the information you provide on your housing contract. To ensure the best possible roommate match it is critical that students complete the matching questionnaire accurately. Q. What type of room will I get? All residents are assigned to double rooms in two bedroom (four person) suites with common kitchen, living room and bathrooms shared by the four residents. Q: When will I receive my housing assignment? Housing assignments & roommate information will be mailed in the first week of July. Q. What if I don t get along with my roommate? Residence hall living offers you opportunities to learn to deal with the challenges of living with others. The staff will mediate conflicts between residents and most are resolved successfully. However, residents are reassigned when the problem cannot be resolved through mediation. Q. How do students get involved in the residence hall? Hall Council is a perfect way to get involved. The Council consists of resident volunteers and the Residence Hall Director. The Hall Council helps communicate concerns regarding campus life to the staff and Student Services, recommends alternative courses of action in dealing with problems in the residence hall, and provides programs for residents.

Residents may also get involved in the MIAD student government or one of our student organizations. While the list of organizations changes from year to year examples include MIAD Adventure (outdoor activities), the Community Awareness Team (community service), the Environmental Awareness Club (recycling), The River Rat Review (the student newspaper), and the Multicultural Student Organization. The list of organizations is limited only by student interest so if you cannot find an activity to meet your interest, the Student Services Office will help you find other students with similar interests and you can create a new organization. Q. Is there telephone service in the room? Hard wired telephone access is provided but it is the student s responsibility to provide a phone, answering machine and to contract with AT&T to provide service to the room. Q. Can I hook up a computer in my room? Yes. Internet access is available through the building s wireless network and hard wired data jacks in each unit. Q: How can I get tech support for internet service? Internet service is provided by Time Warner and they must be contacted directly for tech support. Q. Can I upgrade my internet or cable TV service? Yes! The internet and TV is provided through Time Warner. Students may contact Time Warner directly to purchase enhanced internet and cable TV selections. Students are responsible for setting up, and paying for, any extra services. Q. Will I have an address? Yes, all students are assigned a MIAD address. Students are strongly encouraged to use their MIAD and not their personal addresses because all MIAD communications will be directed to your MIAD account. Q. Does the residence hall have laundry facilities? Yes, a laundry room is located on each residential floor. Residents must provide their own detergent and dryer sheets. Q. Is the hall air-conditioned? Yes. Q. Where do I eat? All apartments are equipped with a full kitchen including a refrigerator, range & oven for students to prepare their own meals. The staff presents meal planning and cooking classes, along with leading regular trips to local groceries and markets. There is also a cafeteria at the school across the street from the dorm. All residents are required to be on a $250/semester meal plan. The meal plan is designed as a student convenience to be used when there is not enough time between classes to return to your room and prepare a meal. The Café provides full breakfast & lunch service during the week. The Café is also open later in the afternoon for light snacks & coffee. There is no meal service on weekends. Students can add additional dollars to the minimum meal plan if desired. MIAD is located in Milwaukee s Third Ward and there are numerous café s, restaurants, and fast food places within a few blocks of the dorm.

Q. Where is the nearest grocery store? Two miles from the campus, accessible by bus. In addition, there is a convenience store a block from the dorm and the Milwaukee Public Market two blocks farther. A shuttle service will be provided to take students to local groceries. Q. Is the residence hall on a bus line? Yes. Two bus routes (#11 and the Green Line) stop within one block of the residence hall and it is only six blocks to all the major bus lines in the city. Buses stop at 2 AM. Q. May I bring a Bike? Yes. There is secure bike storage in front of the dorm on Menomonee Street and bike racks west of the building. Bikes are not permitted in the dorm. Q. May I bring a car? Students are strongly discouraged from bringing a car. However if you must have access to a car for employment or family reasons you may bring one. However, residents are prohibited from parking in the commuter lot and are responsible for renting their own parking spot from one of the many parking lots in the neighborhood. There is limited space available on a first come first served basis in the Two50Two lot for an annual fee. Q. How far is the airport from the residence hall? A 20 minute drive or short bus ride. Q. Is smoking permitted in residence hall rooms? No. In compliance with state law smoking is prohibited in the entire hall, including the parking garage, at all times. A smoking area is provided outside the building. Q. How is my residence hall room furnished? A bed with an X-long twin mattress (80 x 36 ), a drawing table, a stool, a dresser and a closet for each student. The kitchen comes with a full sized refrigerator, a stove (with oven), sink, and dishwasher. Note that no kitchen utensils are provided; students must bring their own pots, pans, dishes, glasses and silverware. The common living area is furnished with a lounge chair, a couch, end tables, a coffee table and a large flat screen TV mounted on the wall. Q: Is there extra storage? No. Students must contain their belongings in their living/bedroom space. Please don t over pack! There is no storage available outside the student units. Q: Is there carpet in the units? The bedrooms are carpeted. The living room, kitchen and bathrooms are hard surfaces. Students may bring rugs for the living room. Q. May I hang up posters? Yes. We prefer putty but tacks are OK, too. Do not use nails to hang anything. Remember that the room must be returned to move in condition with you leave so be extremely careful about hanging items on the walls. Q. What should I bring? You need to bring x-long twin sheets, blankets, a pillow and a shower curtain for the shower (rod & hooks provided). You will need waste paper baskets, toilet paper, storage bins, and bookshelves. You will want to coordinate with your roommate(s)

about cooking & dining items (microwave, coffee pot, pots, pans, plates, glassware, etc.), shower curtain (available for purchase in the Property Manager s office), video game and audio equipment. You will also want to bring fused power strips and extra lighting, but no halogen lamps. You can also bring hot pots, popcorn makers and other small appliances (under 15 amps). And don t forget to bring personal equipment, such as a hair dryer, electric toothbrush, etc. Q. What shouldn t I bring? Window curtains or additional furniture, the apartment is completely furnished. You also should not bring big audio speakers, or large amounts of anything, such as clothes, since the hall does not have the extra storage space for things that do not fit in your room. You should not bring heat-producing appliances with an exposed heating element (i.e., space heaters, electric frying pans or deep fat fryers, gas stoves, toaster ovens, immersion coils, etc.), or any appliance exceeding 15 amps, halogen lamps. If you bring an iron you must use it in the laundry room. Q: Can I loft my bed? Yes, however, you must rent a lofting kit from the Property Manager for $100 a year. You MUST use the lofting kit provided by Two50Two for safety reasons. RA s will inspect student rooms to ensure the safe installation of the lofting kit. Q. May I bring my electric guitar? Yes, but remember you are part of a community and must respect the needs of the community. Q. May I bring a pet? No pets are allowed in the dorm at any time. The only exception is for service animals as defined by the ADA. Q. May I play my music loud? Not as loud as you would at home. Residence hall living is not entirely independent living. You are a member of a community. Therefore, 24 hours a day, if you are requested to turn your music down, you are required to so others may sleep or study. In addition, the building has quiet hours from 11:00 PM to 10:00 AM Sunday through Thursday and 12:00 AM to 10:00 AM Friday and Saturday. During quiet hours, all noise must be kept low. Q. May I make artwork in the residence hall? Yes, with limitations, but with the academic building across the street why would you want to? Flammable / hazardous materials, and others that are difficult to clean up, are prohibited from the dorm. Aerosols produce tiny airborne particles that our ventilation system cannot adequately filter and are therefore, for safety and health reasons, also banned from the dorm. Spraying is prohibited anywhere in the building. Damages resulting from art work in unapproved areas will be charged to the resident. Q. Who is responsible for cleaning the suite common areas (kitchen, living room, bathroom)? The residents who use them. Residents are also responsible for supplying their own cleaning supplies. Housekeeping cleans all hallways lounge spaces. However, it is the residents responsibility to keep major messes out of public areas. Q. Is there a curfew?

No. Q. Can I have overnight visitors? Yes. All guests, including parents, must be checked in with the RA on duty. You must obtain your roommate(s) approval, prior to having overnight guests. Visitors may stay for no more than three consecutive nights. Special arrangements may be made through the Hall Director for longer stays. Residents may not check in more than four guests at a time. Q: Does the front door have an intercom to let guests in: Yes, the front door has an intercom that allows guests to ring the student apartment and announce their visit. Residents will then have to go to the lobby and let their guests in. For security purposes there is not ability to buzz guests in via the intercom system. Q. What is there to do in the neighborhood at night? On MIAD's campus, the Café serves great coffee and munchies until 9:00 Monday Thursday and 1:30 on Fridays. Special events like bands, poetry readings and open microphone nights are also held in the Cafe. In the Residence hall, your RA provides regularly scheduled activities such as movie nights, pizza parties, and other programs. MIAD also hosts school-wide events for students and the public in the main building and off campus. There are a number of restaurants in the Third Ward (the neighborhood in which MIAD is located), as well as art galleries, antique shops, Theatre X and the Skylight Opera House. MIAD is just a few blocks from Milwaukee s main downtown area, with numerous theaters and other performing art venues, night clubs, the Grand Avenue Mall, and the Bradley Center for sports and concerts. Brady Street and UWM, with its many coffee houses and clubs particularly popular with MIAD students, are both a short bus ride away. Furthermore, in the fall and spring (and all through the summer) there are festivals just down the road at the Summerfest grounds, including the famous Summerfest music festival, ethnic and cultural festivals like Indian Summer, Asian Moon, Polishfest, Germanfest, Irishfest, and Pridefest. The Marcus Amphitheater hosts main stage acts throughout the year. Q. Do I need insurance for my belongings in the hall? Students are strongly advised to insure their personal property at MIAD either through their parents homeowner s insurance policy or by purchasing personal property insurance. MIAD is not responsible for theft, damage, or loss of valuables, money, or other personal property belonging to the students. Q: Can I stop in and see my room before move-in day? No, rooms will not be available for touring prior to the Fall 2014 move-in date because of the tight construction schedule. A model of a typical unit is on display in the MIAD lobby and a floor plan of a typical apartment is below.
