1 NCICU 879-A Washington Street Raleigh, NC North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (as of May 20, 2003) Ph: Fx: Web: Independent colleges and universities in North Carolina enroll over 60,000 undergraduates and confer almost onethird of the baccalaureate degrees, about half of the medical degrees, and sixty percent of the law degrees awarded in the state. In 1969, the regionally accredited independent colleges and universities in the state joined together to form the North Carolina Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NCAICU). In 2000, the Independent College Fund of North Carolina, Inc., the N.C. Center for Independent Higher Education, and the Association merged to form the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU). NCICU represents all thirty-seven independent institutions statewide and nationally in areas of public policy, government and coordination of activities with other education constituencies. NCICU also promotes independent institutions to prospective students and other constituencies, provides research, information and staff development opportunities for the colleges and universities, and administers collaborative programs in areas such as purchasing. These independent colleges and universities are nonprofit organizations and are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the regional accrediting agency for private and public institutions of higher education. With a long history of providing higher education for North Carolina residents and other United States and international citizens, these institutions serve a public purpose for the state. Recognizing the major role private institutions play in educating its citizens, the state has provided grant assistance programs for North Carolina students attending independent colleges and universities since Dr. A. Hope Williams is president of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, located in Raleigh. As president, she is the chief executive officer for the thirtyseven presidents who comprise the Association's Board of Directors and for the North Carolina Council of Governing Boards, composed of the chairs and vice-chairs of the individual Boards of Trustees. Dr. Williams advocates for independent higher education with the state of North Carolina and the federal government including the governor, North Carolina General Assembly, state agencies, and Congress. She serves on the Education Cabinet with the governor, leaders of the state university system, the Department of Community Colleges, the State Board of Education, and Department of Public Instruction to address issues affecting education in North Carolina. Dr. Williams received her undergraduate degree in French and History from Duke University, a master's degree in Public Affairs from North Carolina State University and a doctorate in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has been president of NCICU since She also serves as president of the Independent College Fund, a corporate fund-raising arm of NCICU in which twenty-seven A. Hope Williams of the independent colleges and universities participate. 3 Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Ohio AICUO 17 S. High Street, Suite 1020 Columbus, OH Ph: Fx: Web: History and Mission AICUO is the public relations, research and government liaison organization for 51 privately supported nonprofit institutions of higher education in Ohio. Members include four-year undergraduate, graduate and professional schools (excluding theological schools) accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and authorized by the Ohio Board of Regents. AICUO was organized in 1969 to represent the interests of its members to Ohio's lawmakers, regulators and citizens. AICUO seeks to strengthen financial aid programs for students and bring about a greater understanding of the impact and contributions of independent colleges and universities in Ohio. At the same time, AICUO works to promote the well-being of Ohio's higher education system as a whole, with special regard for the dual public/private nature of that system and its responsibility to serve the educational, social and cultural needs of the state and the nation. Public oversight of Ohio's independent colleges and universities is provided by the Ohio Board of Regents, which grants certificates of authorization to nonprofit educational institutions that offer degrees within the state. In addition, unlike public universities, independent colleges must seek reauthorization from the Board at regular intervals. To receive authorization and subsequent reauthorization, institutions must meet the Board's quality standards for faculty, curricula and facilities. As necessary, the Board also approves new degree programs and off-campus degree programs of independent colleges and universities. Although public scrutiny of the independent colleges is significant, it remains non-intrusive and provides Ohio citizens with the greatest diversity and highest quality in both sectors of higher education. Mr. Christman was appointed to the position of president in June He serves the Association full-time. Mr. Christman received his B.A. degree in History and Political Science from Bluffton College in Ohio (1962) and his M.A. degree in History from Ohio State University (1963). 4 Oklahoma Independent Colleges and Universities OICU 3233 E. Memorial Rd., Suite 107-A Edmond, OK Ph: Fx: Web: The Oklahoma Association of Independent Colleges and Universities was organized in 1981 by the presidents of the accredited independent institutions in Oklahoma. On June 30, 1998, the Association merged with the Oklahoma Independent College Foundation which was founded in This merger brought the two different organizations, which had the same memberships, into one organization. The merged organization originally retained the foundation name, but this past year charged to a new name OICU. The organization continues to work for the advancement of independent higher education in Oklahoma. OICU is committed to promoting the values of independent higher education by interpreting those values to the business and legislative communities. Obtaining economic support, whether from private or public resources, remains one of the central purposes of the newly formed organization. As a native Oklahoman, Dr. Gene Stephenson returned home to assume the president's responsibilities for OICU in January Dr. Stephenson served as a mathematics professor, dean and vice president at East Central University for twenty-five years. 5 OICA 7150 S.W. Hampton St., Suite 101 Portland, OR Oregon Independent Colleges Association (as of 9/1/05) Ph: Fx: Web: The Oregon Independent Colleges Association was organized in 1960 as a non-profit corporation under Oregon law. The initial membership consisted of eleven colleges. Membership now numbers sixteen. From 1960 until 1969, OICA functioned on a fairly informal basis with the Board of Trustees, comprised of the presidents, managing the affairs of the Association with the assistance of various ad hoc committees. In 1969 the Board of Trustees determined that in order to carry out its mission more effectively, OICA should organize on a more formal basis and provide for professional staff support. As a consequence, a full-time staff person was hired and in 1970 bylaws were adopted which define the current governance and administrative structure. The by-laws also specify that membership is restricted to independent colleges headquartered in Oregon, accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and tax-exempt under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The purposes of the Oregon Independent Colleges Association are to: Articulate the public benefits of independent higher education at both state and national levels and inform public policy decisions relating to the interests of member institutions; Develop and promote cooperative programs and activities that further academic excellence and enhance educational opportunity among member institutions and throughout higher education in Oregon; Afford voluntary options for member institutions to cooperate in achieving operating economies and in conserving resources; Provide a clearinghouse for information about the whole of Oregon's independent higher education enterprise. Dr. Gary K. Andeen was appointed Executive Director of OICA in October He received his B.A. from Augustana College in Illinois (1968), his M.A. from Ohio State University (1972), and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Ohio State University (1981). 11 TICUA st Ave. S., # 202 Nashville, TN Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (updated 6/26/02) Originally chartered as the Tennessee Council of Private Colleges in 1970, TICUA continues to expand its mission beyond its historical purpose of providing greater choice for needy students seeking to enroll at an in-state independent campus. While government relations activities (such as lobbying the Tennessee General Assembly and liaison with the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation) continue to be the organizational mainstays, there is growing focus on provision of consortial services to member campuses that go well beyond the organization's founding concept. These services include: An annual publication of a marketing piece called "Portraits of Tennessee's Independent Colleges and Universities", A website with network links to all member institutions, A counselor tour program, A tax-exempt pooled bond finance program, Ph: Fx: Web: A variety of public information and research services, and Volume purchase agreements and collaborative activities. The 1996 affiliation of TICU with the Tennessee Foundation for Independent Colleges created the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) which shares staff to provide a broader array of services for the state's network of independent campuses. In January 2000 these two organizations will merge completely under one board to better integrate their missions by bringing top business executives and civic leaders into the higher education policy process and by creating new state programs designed to meet the needs of business and industry. The most recent example of the latter is the "Tennessee Student Employment Incentive Program" created by the Tennessee General Assembly in 1998 to stimulate business and corporate involvement in student financial aid through the provision of partial subsidization of students in careerrelated work-study positions. Claude Pressnell was named president of the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities in January of He assumed this role at the point of the merger of TICU with the Tennessee Foundation for Independent Colleges. Pressnell had served as the executive director of the Foundation since Prior to his work with the independent college and university sector of Tennessee, Pressnell served as the founding executive director of the Institute for Family Studies in Colorado Springs, Colorado. From 1990 to 1994 he served as the director of Financial Aid and assistant professor of Religion at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Pressnell started his career in higher education at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri as an admission counselor. He was soon promoted to director of Admissions, then to dean of students, and finally as the senior director of Admissions and Student Development. Pressnell is a 1985 graduate of Southwest Baptist University where he received his B.A. in Religious Studies. He went on to receive his M.A. in New Testament from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. While serving at Belmont University in Nashville, Pressnell enrolled and completed his doctorate in Educational Leadership, Higher Education Administration at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. His dissertation was entitled, "Integration of Faith and Learning Among Christian Evangelical Colleges and Universities: An Alumni Assessment Model." Pressnell has written a number of journal articles and book chapters. He also has served as an administrative educational consultant in the United States and Central Asia. Claude O. Pressnell, Jr. Pressnell's outside interests include woodworking, camping, and church leadership involvement. He and his wife Kristina have five children and reside in Nashville, Tennessee.
