Cullen Children s Foundation transforms Sanford Children s Hospital Above: Matt and Bridget Cullen welcome Brody Straham to Cully s Kids Weekend Children treated at Sanford Children s Hospital in the new Sanford Fargo Medical Center will have a space to escape doctors, needles and medicine thanks to the Cullen Children s Foundation. On July 13, led by Minnesota Wild forward Matt Cullen and his wife Bridget, the Foundation announced a $1 million gift to the Sanford Health Foundation to design, build and operate a 3,000 square foot state-of-the-art therapeutic and educational play area. The timing of this transformational gift coincides perfectly with the ground breaking for Sanford s new medical center that took place July 31. Sanford Children s Hospital is a wonderful thing to have in this community, Matt said. We are so pleased to be able to commit to support this room for sick children, and we re very happy that it will be located in this beautiful new facility. It is a unique opportunity to directly impact the lives of the kids for a very long time. It s what we re all about. We are very excited to partner with such a committed organization as Sanford to make this a reality. News of the gift and the Cullen s generosity spread quickly throughout North Dakota and Minnesota. But their focus remains on making a difference for kids at Sanford Children s Hospital. We are grateful we can donate money that will help sick kids, Bridget said. But our involvement with them is about so much more than that. We have developed real relationships with these children; we care about them every day, not just during the Cully s Kids Weekend. If we get an invitation to a special event in their lives we get in the car and we go to it. I tell Matt that we are God s little puppets and when he talks to us we listen. Matt agreed, It s not about the publicity. It s about the kids and how do we make them feel better. Matt Cullen poses with A.J. Wroe How do we make them smile? If we do that we re successful. Last year Bridget attended a conference where she first learned of the play area concept. All of the newer high-tech play rooms are in big cities, she said. I heard about what these play areas meant to the kids in New York, Houston and Phoenix, and I thought, Oh my God, why not Fargo? Sick children in Fargo- Moorhead deserve this just as much as kids in big cities. Why should this idea be limited to big city hospitals? I called Matt, and he was all for it. The therapeutic and educational play area will adhere to the principle of no doctors, needles or medications, providing kids with an escape from their injury or illness. Plans for this unique space will include areas for patients of all ages and interests infants and toddlers to teenagers. Design plans will be released at the 2013 Cully s Kids Golf Tournament. The dedicated and purposeful philanthropy shown by the Cullens will inspire others. Passionate people like Matt and Bridget are true leaders in this community, said Brian Mortenson, president of the Sanford Health Foundation. Their leadership extends far beyond Matt s celebrity status because of their selfless approach to philanthropy. Kelby Krabbenhoft, President and CEO of Sanford Health, and Denny Sanford, Sanford benefactor and namesake, captivated the audience with their genuine excitement for plans that reach far beyond the structural components of a new medical facility plans built around the Building Tomorrow Today campaign pillars of healing, caring, discovering, building and leading. The Building Tomorrow Today campaign pillars are at the forefront of our groundbreaking celebration, stated Lonnie Pederson, Vice President of the Sanford Health Foundation Fargo. 4 Inspired to give back Jacob Greenmyer for61 Honorary Chair At age 13, Jacob Greenmyer struggled to participate in sports, theater and working on the family farm. Constantly short of breath or out sick with the flu, Jacob and his family knew something was wrong. Physicians made the shocking discovery that Jacob s symptoms were the result of lung cancer he was immediately put into the care of the Roger Maris Cancer Center. With the support of his family and the expertise of the Cancer Center staff, Jacob went through surgery and months of recovery. Today, he is 18 and cancer-free, and just beginning his freshman year at the University of North Dakota as a pre-medicine major. Inspired by the care he received at the Roger Maris Cancer Center, he uses every opportunity to give back and provide support for others fighting cancer. At 61for61, Jacob will represent countless others whose lives have been touched by the Roger Maris Cancer Center as the 61for61 Honorary Chair. Celebrating Roger Maris Henry Repeating Arms Company, Bayonne, N.J., celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Roger Maris 61 home run season last year by raising nearly $50,000 through an online auction of commemorative rifles. The company added to the auction proceeds and made a gift of $61,000 to benefit the Roger Maris Cancer Center at the 2012 Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament banquet in June.
