2 February 27, 201 Dear Aspiring Leader: Youngstown State University has a long history of preparing leaders for schools across the region. There are virtually hundreds of school principals and superintendents here in northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania that have earned their degrees or administrative licenses at YSU. These include not only many of the veteran school leaders in the region, but also the most respected rising stars who have led area schools and districts to outstanding records of achievement. YSU offers the Master s degree in Educational Administration and the Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. YSU also provides the course work required for the principal license in Ohio and Pennsylvania, the superintendent license in Ohio, and the superintendent letter of eligibility in Pennsylvania. YSU s administrator preparation programs are aligned with state and national standards. They have earned national recognition by the Educational Leadership Constituent Council, the nation s most prestigious K-12 leadership accreditation organization, for the preparation of building and district leaders. As would be expected, YSU masters graduates and principalship completers consistently perform well on state administrative licensure exams and on value-added metrics recently instituted in Ohio. For over twenty years YSU has provided administrative preparation programs to off-campus cohorts of aspiring administrators. Often it has done so at the request of and in collaboration with a county educational service center or a school district seeking to ensure a cadre of well-prepared applicants for future administrative positions. With many current school principals expected to retire in the months and years ahead, school officials in our region have recognized the need to replenish the pool of highly qualified candidates for these critical leadership positions. Seeking to support area school districts, the Mahoning County Educational Service Center and YSU s Educational Administration program are collaborating to launch a countywide program for aspiring school leaders. The goal is to help prepare the next generation of school leaders by providing an accelerated, cohort-based, Hybrid Administrative Masters + Principalship Program that combines the best in a high-quality administrative preparation with convenience for the busy professional. The YSU- Mahoning County Cohort model also offers the advantage of personalized attention and interaction with a cadre of practitioner instructors as well as university faculty. The program is designed to support professional networking, a vital element contributing to program completion, exchange of innovative practices among schools, and enhanced career opportunities and mobility for cohort members. 3 Application Instructions YSU Masters in Educational Administration + Principalship Licensure Program Mahoning County Cohort Starting May 2013 This sheet describes the materials and procedures to be followed when applying for admission to the Mahoning County Cohort of the YSU Masters in Educational Administration + Principalship Program. Applicants are responsible for seeing that all required materials arrive at the indicated address by the application deadline, April 15 th, A completed Graduate Studies Application Form. 2. Application fee- a check in the amount of $30 made out to Youngstown State University with MC-ESC Your Name in the memo line (Please use the enclosed, postage paid envelope marked Attn: Student Accts to return this fee to the university separate from your application packet). The fee is waived if you have previously applied to a graduate degree program at Youngstown State University. 3. A professional resume (including your prior education, professional work and leadership experience, as well as memberships and notable accomplishments). 4. Photocopies of your professional teaching license(s) (or evidence indicating eligibility for such license). 5. Official transcripts from each college or institution attended for either undergraduate or graduate education other than Youngstown State University. (To be mailed by the college or university directly to YSU at the address below). 6. Recommendations including: a) one Reference Letter from your principal, superintendent or other administrator in a position to evaluate your professional knowledge, skills, professionalism, and leadership potential; and b) two Recommendation Forms completed by others assessing your qualifications for admission to the program. (The Letter and Forms should be mailed by the Recommenders using the postage paid envelopes provided; or to the YSU address below, if you are receiving this application packet electronically). 7. A Brief Essay (500 to 750 words) addressing why you aspire to be a principal or building level leader and why you think you will be an effective one. Personally complete and forward items 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7. Direct universities and your recommenders to forward items 5 and 6 respectively.
