6 Safety of cyclists at junctions in built-up areas Turning-off accidents between motor vehicles and cyclists Safety of cyclists at roundabouts The impacts on traffic of a separate left-turn green phase at signalcontrolled intersections

7 Turning-off accidents involving cyclists Methodology and Databasic: * U Ab-Rf = accident beetween turning-off motor vehicle and cyclist driving straight ahead ** KPA = access road of the junction, traffic counting at 350 junctions + 43 KPA

Turning-off accidents involving cyclists 8 Results Accident analysis (1)*: ca. 80 % of accidents from this accident type lead to personal injury à The personal injury is 6-time higher than for all accidents à 36 % of turning-off accidents lead to personal injury à 15 % of cycling accidents lead to personal injury à 7 % of all accidents lead to personal injury * Source: Accident data from EF, D, DA, MD und MS ( )

Turning-off accidents involving cyclists 9 Turning-off left/right vehicle collide with cyclists, which drive straight ahead at junctions.

Turning-off accidents involving cyclists 10 Results Accident analysis (2): * Source: Accident data from EF, D, DA, MD und MS ( )

Turning-off accidents involving cyclists 11 Results Accident analysis (3): * Source: Accident data from EF, D, DA, MD und MS ( )

Turning-off accidents involving cyclists 12 Results Results Accident analysis (4): 2/3 right-turning accidents, 1/3 left-turning accidents Main causer is the car driver (>90%) Most frequent accident cause is cycling on the pavement or in wrong direction (in total 12%) High risk for cyclists years old High risk for car drivers ; > 65 years old * Accidents between cars turning-off to the right (near side) or to the left (off side) and cyclists cycling straight ahead

13 Turning-off accidents involving cyclists Results traffic behavior (1): * Conflictrate: conflicts as share of all 736 interactions [%]

14 Turning-off accidents involving cyclists Results traffic behavior (2): * Cause of accidents with cyclists in German accident statistics (destatis): 4.0 % ** Cause of accidents with cyclists in German accident statistics (destatis) cycling on wrong infrastructure or in wrong direction : 11.5 %

Safety of cyclists at roundabouts Methodology and Databasic: Examination of the literature Macroanalysis of the accident occurrence Federal state North-Rhine-Westphalia 6 years, Cat. 1-4 und 6 400,000 accidents in built-up areas 5,811 accidents at roundabouts Mikroanalysis 100 roundabouts in Germany Accident occurrence 3 years, Cat 1-6, 1,015 accidents Constitutive criteria and traffic volume Observation of the bevahior 10 roundabouts Videoanalysis in each case of 4-5 hours video recordings

Safety of cyclists at roundabouts Results: structure of accidents with personal injury

Safety of cyclists at roundabouts Guidance of bicycle traffic and accidents Mixed traffic (A) Cycle path with priority at roads (B1) Cycle path/footpath with priority at roads (B2) Cycle path without priority at roads (B3)

Safety of cyclists at roundabouts Accident cost rates:

Safety of cyclists at roundabouts Results and recommendations High safety level at roundabouts designed in accordance with the guidelines Mixed traffic on the roundabout s circular roadway ist the safest arrangement for cyclists, even if traffic volume is high Cycle paths with priority are the least safe form of guidance of bicycle traffic The width of deflection in accordance with the guidelines Marked inner rings are not appropriated and allow overtaking

left-turn phase at signal-controlled intersections Facts According to Section 37 the German General Administrative Regulations on the Road Traffic Regulations (VwV-StVO), situations in which traffic signals are necessary include those where accidents frequently happen because visibility is restricted and there is no possibility of improving visibilty or prohibiting traffic which is crossing or entering the road, and those where frequent infrigements of rigth-of-way without this being difficult to identify or with the right-of-way being difficult to unterstand.

left-turn phase at signal-controlled intersections Facts The VwV-StVO, sections 39 through 43): The free flow of traffic is to be upheld using the means available. In applying this principle, the safety of all road users takes priority over the free flow of traffic.

left-turn phase at signal-controlled intersections Facts The German Guidelines for Traffic Signals (RiLSA 2010): Traffic signals are installed to increase traffic safety and/or to improve the quality of traffic flow.
