1 Camp Scholarship This Gift of Hope sends a child to either Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp or Mar- Lu-Ridge Lutheran Camp for one week. Campers experience the joy of nature, the skill of sports, the fun of new friends and a caring camp staff. (1) Language Translation Services Difficulties for the homeless are compounded if they do not yet speak English. N Street Village can provide services in more than 150 languages. This Gift of Hope provides one month of services to homeless women who do not speak English as a first language. (2) Outdoor ministries of the ELCA, Mar-Lu- Ridge is in the Catoctin Mountains in Central Maryland and Caroline Furnace is in Virginia s Shenandoah Valley. The camps provide experiences which change lives, build friendships, and create Christian communities. Founded by Luther Place Memorial Church (DC) in 1972, N Street Village is a community of empowerment and recovery for homeless and lowincome women in Washington, DC. With comprehensive services addressing both emergency and long-term needs, LSV helps women achieve personal stability and make gains in their housing, income, employment, mental health, physical health, and addiction recovery. Education and Training Scholarships Many clients served by Good Shepherd Housing Foundation better their lives by attending a local community college or training academy. This Gift of Hope provides funds to cover educational costs of upgrading skills and obtaining certifications. (3) Church Repair Architecturally beautiful churches in Slovakia need repair. This Gift of Hope provides funds to repair church buildings, including sanctuaries, served by the Lutheran Churches in Slovakia. Repairs will provide a safe worship space. (4) Good Shepherd Housing Foundation s mission is To provide housing options for vulnerable individuals and families with low income, particularly those struggling with mental illness. Support services include partnering with area service providers who are skilled professionals in their Shepherd Homes program and providing case management, life skills and rental assistance to families in transitional living programs. Since 1989, the Lutheran Churches in Slovakia, with the assistance of missionaries and financial support from partner churches, have reclaimed most of its pre-world War II properties, reopened numerous Lutheran secondary and elementary schools, established a Lutheran Theological Seminary complex in Bratislava, and begun outreach to the Roma (Gypsy) community.

2 Medical Care for Moms This gift provides emergency medical care for homeless victims of abuse served by Northern Virginia Coalition (NOVACO). While children qualify for local and state benefits and health programs, many mothers do not. (5) Fund for Retired Pastors The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia does not maintain a pension fund for pastors who retired before This Gift of Hope to ELCIN will go into a retirement account and will support an outreach workshop for these elderly pastors. (6) The Northern Virginia Coalition (NOVACO) helps homeless victims of domestic abuse in northern Virginia become healthy, secure and selfsufficient through community collaboration to provide housing, education, childcare, counseling, mentoring and financial management skills. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia cooperatively support a Lutheran Seminary in Namibia and each also sustains other educational and economic projects to improve life and livelihood and to meet the spiritual needs of the Namibian people. Education Scholarships Roanoke College provides scholarship support which benefits students from the Washington DC area or from our three international Companion Synods. This Gift of Hope will help students with tuition and other basic college expenses. (7) Bathroom Repair The decades-old sanitation systems at the 19 hostels for children (orphanages) served by the ELCRN community in Namibia are aging and need repair. Your gift will help purchase toilets and sinks, repair showers and upgrade septic systems, providing cleaner and healthier facilities. (8) Roanoke College, an ELCA college, develops students as whole persons and prepares them for responsible lives of learning, service, and leadership by promoting their intellectual, ethical, spiritual and personal growth. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia cooperatively support a Lutheran Seminary in Namibia and each also sustains other educational and economic projects to improve life and livelihood and to meet the spiritual needs of the Namibian people.

3 One Week of Service LVC volunteers work on social justice issues at over 120 nonprofits across the country including the Metropolitan Washington DC Synod, giving organizations access to affordable, skilled employees. This gift allows Lutheran Volunteer Corps to provide one week of service, addressing injustices through direct service, advocacy and organizational support. (9) Area Transit Assistance By metro or bus, pre-loaded SmarTrip cards help homeless women, clients of N Street Village, attend medical appointment, job interview, work, and recovery support groups. This Gift of Hope provides a month s transportation to a woman rebuilding her life. (10) Lutheran Volunteer Corps is a national service development organization that matches volunteers with full-time, year-long positions in social justice organizations. Volunteers work at nonprofits in 13 cities to provide direct service, advocacy, community organizing, education and more. Living together in household communities of 4-7 people, the volunteers commit to 3 core spiritual practices: building community, working for justice, and living simply and sustainably. Household Furnishing Kit Provide one homeless family at Transitional Housing Corporation with a basic household furnishing kit as they move from a homeless shelter into an apartment. This Gift of Hope helps finance beds, sheets, kitchen items and more. (11) Water Feature in Memory Gardens Therapeutic gardens are designed to facilitate health and well-being by providing a peaceful open-air environment, with stimulating color, fragrances, textures and sounds. This Gift of Hope will make possible water features and the soothing sound of water to the gardens at The Village at Rockville, a National Lutheran Community. (12) Transitional Housing Corporation is a faithbased homeless service organization, founded in 1990, with the mission to provide housing and supportive services to at-risk families to help them make transformational changes in their lives. THC has become a leading services and housing provider in DC providing transitional, permanent supportive, rapid re-housing and affordable housing to more than 500 families. Serving seniors and their families with quality care for over 120 years, The Village at Rockville, nestled on 30 acres in Rockville, MD offers independent living, short-term rehabilitation, extended nursing care, respite, hospice, assisted living and, coming soon, memory care services.

4 Auto Repair Reliable transportation to employment or school is a key to success. This Gift of Hope ensures that clients of Good Shepherd Housing Foundation have access to working vehicles. (13) Job Skills Coaching Job competition is intense. Some who want to work do not know the basic steps to gain employment. This Gift of Hope to Community Family Life Services helps clients develop skills needed to get a job: how to search, communicate, dress, interview. Activities and Outings for Foster Kids Lutheran Social Services/National Capital Area gives foster children who have experienced neglect or abuse an opportunity to smile. This Gift of Hope sends children to museums, picnics, and other adventures creating positive memories. (15) Founded in 1969, Community Family Life Services vision is to end intergenerational poverty by creating opportunities for positive change and transformation. CLFS provides children, youth, and adults with the tools to move beyond poverty and homelessness into permanent self-sufficiency. Programs include affordable housing, mentoring for youth and families, employment coaching and placement, case management, parent education, youth development programs, and food and clothing distribution. Invest in Tomorrow s Leaders Those called to ministry sacrifice time and energy, study the Word of God, and develop skills which put words into action. This Gift of Hope to the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg will help underwrite costs, thus maintaining steady tuition levels. (16) Proclaiming God s grace, Lutheran Social Services/National Capital Area compassionately works to create a society where the most vulnerable among us find wholeness, justice and selfsufficiency. LSS/NCA has served the Metro DC community since 1917 with in-depth, professional services through faith active in love. 5 Equipped for the Job Getting a job is great until the supervisor says you need an ID card, text book, uniform, work boots or tools. This Gift of Hope equips Southeast Ministry clients for their jobs. (17) Emergency Services Community Family Life Services provides many services to people who are homeless and come in off the streets with immediate needs, such as shoes and coats. This Gift of Hope will provide items to these clients which need emergency help. (18). Located in Ward 8 of Washington, DC, Southeast Ministry provides a ministry of hope for men and women in a safe and respectful environment through education, job readiness and other programs that build self-esteem, transform lives, and help those involved realize their God-given abilities. Founded in 1969, Community Family Life Services vision is to end intergenerational poverty by creating opportunities for positive change and transformation. CLFS provides children, youth, and adults with the tools to move beyond poverty and homelessness into permanent self-sufficiency. Programs include affordable housing, mentoring for youth and families, employment coaching and placement, case management, parent education, youth development programs, and food and clothing distribution. Printer for Seminary Library Paulinum Seminary in Windhoek, Namibia does an outstanding job of educating students to become pastors and the library facility is a key component of this mission. This Gift of Hope buys a new printer for the Seminary s library. (19) Transportation Assistance Transportation is a big expense for Northern Virginia Coalition (NOVACO) families. The mothers need to get to work, to counseling and/or to transport their children to daycare. This gifts will provide money for gas, bus tokens and more. 6 Nature Study and Sports Equipment Campers at Mar-Lu-Ridge Lutheran Camp and Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp spend much of their time outdoors. This gift provides for various activities, including nature identification, fishing, archery, caving, and science. This Gift of Hope will help make camp memories and will be distributed to the camps. (21) Work Essentials Low-income families, served by Community Family Life Services, need a variety of services to help them look professional for the work place. This Gift of Hope provides for grooming, haircuts, hygiene products and proper work attire, including clothing and uniforms. Bridge the Digital Divide Access to information technology (IT) is not a luxury; it is a key to improving the educational and economic prospects of Southeast Ministry learners. This Gift of Hope helps SEM purchase equipment and maintain the infrastructure to help learners succeed. (23) Groceries for a Family for a Day This Gift of Hope will help meet a family s basic food needs so the struggling family, served by the Northern Virginia Coalition (NOVACO), can concentrate on fulfilling their educational and parenting goals. (24) Located in Ward 8 of Washington, DC, Southeast Ministry provides a ministry of hope for men and women in a safe and respectful environment through education, job readiness and other programs that build self-esteem, transform lives, and help those involved realize their God-given abilities. (25) Medications Co-Pay Most of us have a co-pay when we purchase our medications. Due to limited income, many seniors at Fellowship Square Foundation must choose between medicine and food. This Gift of Hope will help cover costs of their medications, freeing limited dollars for other needs. Make life more joyful for residents at The Village at Rockville, a National Lutheran Community, by contributing to the housing, training, and maintenance of an on-site pet therapy dog. Salary Support for a Pastor in El Salvador The pastors of the Lutheran Church in El Salvador serve in impoverished and marginalized communities. Families struggle daily to meet their basic needs; they cannot fully support pastors. These pastors serve their congregations and then work jobs to provide for their families. Placed in an ELCA endowment fund, this Gift of Hope creates a supplemental source of income for Salvadoran pastors. (31) SmarTrips for Success Residents at Transitional Housing Corporation spend an average of $50 per week commuting to job interviews and job training seminars. This gift helps cover transportation costs during the vulnerable time between homelessness and self-sufficiency. (32) The Lutheran Church in El Salvador provides spiritual guidance, hope and reconciliation to El Salvadoran people who lack fulfillment of basic needs. Unemployment, lack of health care, and violence are daily occurrences for some, with women, senior citizens, and children among those most vulnerable. The church works with allied ministries to provide for basic needs, education, and health care for many in urban and rural areas. 9 Feed a Seminarian This Gift of Hope helps meet basic needs for students and their families at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. The Seminary Food Pantry provides nonperishable foods, fresh produce, laundry/cleaning supplies and more--essentials for families with limited income who pursue their call to public ministry. (33) Renew Life for a Refugee Family This Gift of Hope helps a refugee family, served by Lutheran Social Services/National Capital Area, build a better future and regain self-worth. Toiletry Kits include daily necessities, including toothbrushes, towels, soap, and shampoo. 10 Our Daily Bread This Gift of Hope provides one meal through Giant or Safeway gift cards to underprivileged children and families who are living with or have been affected by HIV-AIDS and are clients of Lutheran Family Services/National Capital Area. (37) Rush Hour Ride A bus ride can be the difference between a Southeast Ministry learner attending class/work, or living another day without self-sufficiency. This Gift of Hope provides much needed transit help for low-income individuals attending literacy and GED preparation classes or rides to work. (38) Proclaiming God s grace, Lutheran Social Services/National Capital Area compassionately works to create a society where the most vulnerable among us find wholeness, justice and selfsufficiency. FSF provides caring and secure living environments and important support services which help residents to stay independent as long as possible.
