BRIEF REPORT OF WORKSHOP ON Modern Trends in Soft Computing and Security Issues Date: September 23 28, 2013 Jointly organized by Center for Soft Computing Research (CSCR) Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata & National Institute of Science & Technology, Berhampur, Orissa Venue NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY PLAUR HILLS, BERHAMPUR , ODISHA
BRIEF REPORT ON WORKSHOP ON Modern Trends in Soft Computing and Security Issues Introduction Soft Computing is a collection of complex methodologies that embraces approximate reasoning, imprecision, uncertainty and partial truth in order to mimic the remarkable human capability of making decisions in real-life, ambiguous environments. Soft Computing has therefore become popular in developing systems that encapsulate human expertise. Network Security is of paramount importance in this age of data communication. Compromising network security is often much easier than compromising physical or local security, and much more common in today's world. Cryptology builds the core of Network and Data Security, and ensures security, authenticity and privacy in communication, storage and computation of sensitive data. This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the industrial applications of soft computing and covers a wide range of application areas, including optimization, data analysis and data mining, computer graphics and vision, prediction and diagnosis, design, intelligent control, and traffic and transportation systems. The workshop also focuses on all technical and practical aspects of security and its applications for wired and wireless networks. The expert academia will exchange their understanding in modern security threats and will describe significant advances in the areas of security & its applications. Participation is extended to researchers, designers, educators and interested parties in all related disciplines and specialization. Objective of the Programme The aim of the workshop is to give an exposure to the fundamental ideas and concepts in some key areas of Soft Computing and Network Security, which will be beneficial to interested M.Tech. and Ph.D students (at their initial stage) and also to Engineering Institute teachers involved in teaching /research in Soft Computing and Network Security. Topics to be covered include, but are not restricted to: Soft Computing Image Processing Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning Bio-Informatics and Neural Computing

R. Rao AIMSCS, Hyderabad. Programme Schedule The detailed Programme schedule is enclosed in Annexure-I. Execution of the Programme With the above objective in mind, NIST had applied to the Center for Soft Computing Research (CSCR), ISI Kolkata to jointly organize this workshop by Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and National Institute of Science & Technology, Berhampur, Orisha at our Institute (NIST) campus from September 23 to 28, 2013, which would be attended by the College faculty members/ researchers/ Master Students from all over India. Later, DRDO was approached for a grant of INR one lakh.
CSCR, ISI, Kolkata approved the Programme with a sanction of Rs. 2, 67,000/-(Rupees Two Lakhs and sixty seven thousand only). On their part, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) kindly responded with a fund of Rs /-(Fifty Thousand only) for this workshop. Details of the workshop in the form of Brochure, posters and e mails were sent in the 2nd week of August 2013 to more than 200 Engineering Colleges throughout the country (including all IIT, NIT, top colleges and renowned University). The response was spontaneous with about two hundred (200) applicants responding within the stipulated time (Sept. 8, 2013). The selection committee members comprising of Pinaki Sarkar, Sourav Sen Gupta and ably led by the Program coordinator, Dr. Kuntal Ghosh conducted several meetings at CSSR, ISI Kolkata. More than seventy (70) participants were selected and intimidated via or Telephone. Details of Participants are enclosed in Annexure-II. Boarding and Lodging Arrangements to the Resource Persons and Participants All the Resource Persons were accommodated in the luxurious SWOSTI HOTEL at GOPALPUR SEA- BEACH. Each speaker was provided a separate double room for them/their family. The participants were accommodated in Motel Mermaid, a reputed HOTEL at GOPALPUR SEA-BEACH. Double rooms were provided for all participants on twin sharing basis. Lunch arranged for all resource persons, supporting staff along with participants in the YOGA Centre in rock Garden, NIST Campus. Dinner and Breakfast was arranged only for participants and resource persons in their allocated Hotel, respectively. Valedictory Session Valedictory session was held on the last day of the programme i.e. Sept. 28, 2013 in TIFAC Conference Hall Complex, NIST. Prof. Geetika Mudali, Placement Director, NIST presided the function. The Program Coordinator cum guest of honor, Prof. Kuntal Ghosh, Assistant Professor, ISI Kolkata highlighted the importance of the workshop MTSCS 2013 through a splendid conclusive talk on this occasion. Some of the participants responded with their delightful feedbacks applauding the stupendous effort of the organizing committee of MTSCS Their out of the way (rare) gesture of gifting a memento to the organizing committee of MTSCS 2013 made the occasion a truly cherish able one. The memento was then handed over to Prof. Geetika Mudali, Placement Director, NIST to be preserved in the premises
of NIST as one the most cherished gifts. Finally, certificates to the participants were distributed by Prof. Kuntal Ghosh, Assistant Professor, ISI Kolkata and Prof. Geetika Mudali, Placement Director, NIST. Course Material Details An executive bag with the entire programme schedule (workshop kit) was handed over to the participants in the inaugural session on CDs containing the course material (softcopy of all of the talk of all the speakers in pptx/pdf format) were given to each participant at the end of the programme. The same course material was circulated among the participants via their e mail provided. Excursions: Two extrusions were arranged for the participants. The first one was to the famous Siddha Bhairavi Temple is a Famous Shakti Shrines situated at Mantridi, about 10 km from NIST, Berhampur in Ganjam district of Orissa India Here the presiding deity is Goddess Bhairavi. The trip was arranged on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 between 8 am to 9:15 am before the start of Day 2 of the workshop, MTSCS The following describes the temple briefly. The temple is carved in crude fashion, the idol features one leg and four hands. It is said that this idol was excavated from a ploughed field and was enshrined as such in a newly adorned temple in the year All the Sankranti days in every month of the Hindu Calendar and Tuesdays are considered auspicious here. A major attraction of the temple lie in the fact that it houses 108 sub shrines dedicated to all Hindu gods present from Kashmir to Kanyakumari like the 12 jyotirlingas, Vaishno Devi, Dashavatara, Venkateshwara, Ranganatha, Meenakshi, Badrinath. A big shrine is also present which houses Lord Jagannath along with his siblings. It is believed that at the end of Kaliyuga Bhairavi devi will accompany Kalki Avatar in restoring Dharma. The participants were happy to start the Day 2 with puja. The second excursion was on on Thursday, September 26, 2013, i.e., Day 4 of MTSCS, between 3:30 pm to 8 pm. The location was PATI SONEPUR, an uninhabited (virgin) beach on the Andhra Odisha border, which is about 15 kms from NIST, the venue of MTSCS, The beach is along the river Bahuda which divides the sea from the main land at Sonepur. Pati Sonepur is the name of the Beach at the other side and is famous for its virginity, colourful water and loneliness, which was a treat to watch. The resource persons from ISI, Kolkata along with Dr. Pinaki Sarkar (Convener, MTSCS) arranged for a boat ride to a near by island starting from just prior to sunset continuing to early evening, which was appreciated by one and all.
