Dr. Hemlata S. Mohan M essage It gives us immense satisfaction to share with you our pride and happiness on being adjudged the Number one school of the STATE of JHARKHAND, ranked among the top CBSE schools, across 14 parameters of educational excellence as reported by Education World India School Rankings - September, The DPS Bokaro family takes pride in expressing its gratitude to all stakeholders the promising young achievers, the scholarly teachers and the ever contributing parents. The team dedicates itself to ever widening horizons of excellence, supported by the able bodied school managing committee under the flagship of our visionary Chairman, Shri.V. K. Shunglu. In the wake of the violent face of man and our politics the only respite would be the gospels of the Mahatma who believed, practiced and promoted non-violence as a way of life. The primary task of education is to awaken the underlying goodness of every human being through non-violence which is the path of respect towards every human being by awakening the inner consciousness. A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave. Non-violence is kindling the light of love in the darkest of hearts and sowing the seeds of trust from the threshold of hope, peace and prosperity. The philosophy of Non-violence leads us to the highest ethics - Empathy, which is the goal of all Education and Evolution. This Dussehra - let the embodiment of energy, knowledge, truth and self-realisation, Goddess Durga be manifested as the destroyer of evil and prevail as the symbol of life, moral order and righteousness on our Earth. For us the educators, there is only one religion and that is humanity and these festivals are a time to reflect, recreate and rejuvenate society with the dynamism of education. Heartiest greetings for Durga Puja, Navratra and the Festival of Lights- Diwali!

The footprints of the titanosaur measures 3.6 feet long and 6.4 feet wide. The footprint has been preserved in a natural cast of sand and silt. This cast will have researchers to know more about how these giant animals walked the Earth. Mourning is not exclusively a human behaviour Mourning or grieving the loss of a loved one was considered a social behaviour exhibited by humans alone. Later it was found that other social animals like gorillas and elephants also grieve for their loved ones. Now researches have found that whales also show the same behaviour. To some scientists and researchers, this does not come as a surprise since whales are known to be social. In one of the examples, researchers studying this phenomenon have reported how a whale carried a dead new born whale on its forehead to prevent it from sinking. Issue nd Oct

6 Solving peer pressure problems Dr. Knowall A preteen has so much to look forward to in life. This is also a time when you are there and yet everything seems so far. There are new adventures, hopes, new academic goals and all your personal ambitions seem to be changing. This is a time to explore. When it means to explore it does not mean to ape somebody. Though this sounds a little harsh, copying somebody will take away your own personality. Each bakery sells cheesecakes but you are willing to walk further to your favorite corner to get the best one. This means you have an individual liking for cheesecakes from a particular favorite bakery. This makes you different and distinct. Peer pressure problems means trying to fit in and trying to get out of a mould. Believe in yourself and concentrate on your work, studies and talents. Hone your interests and cut down on idle time. It is always good to explore and certainly get out of your mould. But at the same time, never do something that your peers do. Students in the school bus face a lot of pressure from peers. The peers have selected seats, decorum and many times the younger students need to follow a protocol. But most proactive schools are vigilant and have taken suitable measures to avoid such issues. But it is your right to be polite and also decline when it is necessary. Peer pressure can arise out of your own lack of confidence. Supposing a peer has a background of relatives who are musicians and he is flaunting an aptitude. But it can be very difficult for you to fit into the mould especially when you have a limited idea about this type of art. It is good to have a variety of friends who have varied interests. We can learn from them. But sensing peer pressure it is best to stand away and be a bit passive when you are succumbed to forced learning. Being up to date with the latest trends in fashion, music, gadgets, lingo are some of the commonest things urban school kids face at a tender age. Academics are getting competitive. You may have a unique skill in art or sports and a few struggles when it comes to biology or geometry. But you are here to learn and not follow a trend. It is perfectly fine if some peer in the family has won accolades in math and physics. Perhaps, you will set a trend someplace else. Believe in yourself and concentrate on your work, studies and talents. Hone your interests and cut down on idle time. It is a great life and working on your skills will make your more all rounded and acceptable. If you are facing some kind of peer pressure at school, be frank with your counselor or take it up with your teacher. They are always there to counsel and guide you. Trust is very important when students have a problem. Most problems are dealt with inner confidence and a confidante who will affirm that confidence in you. Stay smiling and cherish the gifts God has given you. Dr Knowall will answer queries from readers through this column. Mail your questions to knowall@youngpioneer.in Issue nd Oct

8 Dear students Solve something, which is extraordinary and which will boost up your mental level, logical reasoning as well as your thinking skill. The alien number system It was the year 2456 AD. Earth finally made contact with an alien race. Earth received some messages from the aliens and realised that they use a decimal system only that their representation of numbers is different. It was quite simple to identify some of the numbers. In fact, Earth was able to decode and identify the following numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 0 They were not able to identify 2, 4 and 6. Luckily for them they found some arithmetic expressions but they are struggling to decipher them. 1 * 5 + * 9 # = # 1 9 # + * = % # # + 3 # = 78 Can you come to the rescue of Earth and identify the numbers for *, # and %? Paralympic Games The Paralympic Games is a major international multi-sport event involving athletes with a range of disabilities, including impaired muscle power (e.g. paraplegia and quadriplegia, muscular dystrophy, post-polio syndrome, spina bifida), impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency (e.g. amputation or dysmelia), leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, vision impairment and intellectual impairment. There are Winter and Summer Paralympic Games, which since the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea, are held almost immediately following the respective Olympic Games. All Paralympic Games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The Paralympics has grown from a small gathering of British World War II veterans in 1948 to become one of the largest international sporting events by the early 21st century. Paralympians strive for equal treatment with non-disabled Olympic athletes, but there is a large funding gap between Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The Paralympic Games are organized in parallel with the Olympic Games, while the IOC-recognized Special Previous Issue Solution: Answers in next issue! Send your solutions to us at editor@youngpioneer.in Sales on each day: Monday: 3, Tuesday: 6 Wednesday: 12, Thursday: 24 Friday: 48, Saturday: 96 So the answer is = 84 That is the brute force solution. Now assume the sales on the first day was x. Every day the sales double. So, Tuesday is 2x, Wednesday 4x, Thursday is 8x etc. So, on day n it is 2^(n-1)x. That is, on day 6 (saturday), the sales would be 2^(6-1)*3 = 96. Sales on Wednesday is 2^(3-1)*3 =12. The answer is 96-12= 84. Wikipedia Corner Olympics World Games include athletes with intellectual disabilities, and the Deaflympics include deaf athletes. Given the wide variety of disabilities that Paralympic athletes have, there are several categories in which the athletes compete. The allowable disabilities are broken down into ten eligible impairment types. The categories are impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, vision impairment and intellectual impairment. These categories are further broken down into classifications, which vary from sport to sport. The classification system has led to cheating controversies revolving around athletes who over-stated their disabilities, in addition to the use of performanceenhancing drugs Issue nd Oct

10 The Know-It-All Facade! Achu The youngsters between thirteen and twenty of age globe trot with a Know- it- all attitude. Their wish is the command of their parents. The information of the entire universe is at the feel of their finger-tips. Ignorance is a stigma, warranting ostracism. Confidence is their body language. Garbed in the guise of the Know- it- all attitude, they risk buffoonery. The other day when my teenage daughter asked me for some language quips, I felt elated. Wow! She has time for language learning and...my dream started taking new wings. Perhaps she really aims to become a doctor who writes. She is developing a flair for the language. I gave her one of my favourites only to realise the purpose when one of my respected colleagues quipped, That s a lovely what s app status. So little for my dreams! We played the game for a few days and then one day I gave her one of her beautiful pictures and told her, it could be her DP, her profile pic. Her eyes shone with happiness and brilliantly but there was that look of curiosity and amazement. I was enjoying it. To her it was difficult to believe that her mother, carrier of orthodox values and culture, a generation older should be tech- savvy. Our children, they understand everything differently. Her wonder was replaced with first a patronising and then a dismissive attitude. Oh! The disdainful attitude of the young! No doubt, Impudence amounting to a feeling of superiority and arrogance has always been the mark of the youth at all times. Recall the times when we were young, only now it is stronger and louder. Their challenging attitude can be a cause of a war in the classroom with the teacher any day, for they trust their information than the knowledge of the service provider. They insist strongly on getting their way, come what Every brave facade has behind it the same touching lines, Amma, I am afraid of the unknown, I am afraid of the dark though I love reading Twilight saga, may. They breeze past you as if they have their entire future laid out in front of them, like the architecture s building layout or an astrologer s parrot card, unafraid of the consequences. Parents are the victims of the various invasions into the world of the child. No matter how much hard they try, they are registered fools, much behind the modern times. Why does it bother us, this confidence of the young? They are confident because they gel with the world around, they are brilliant when it comes to technology. They are masters of the brave new world. They trust their friends. They deal with more peer pressure and more kinds of challenges than we did at our age. To have that prized guy as the friend, who is popular, handsome, topper and of course not the teachers pet is a competition of a different kind, not to forget the activities of the identity less, faceless social media. The exaggerations, the boasts and toasts, all are larger and alluring temptations. The prize is self appreciation. The congratulations, applauds from all are too sweet and make the young want more, quicker and better than the best. The topping on the crust, the icing on the cake is the be positive mantra. Be confident! Behave as if you have it all! And thus every youngster trots the globe with impudent confidence, in spite of all the lack of direction and fears of the heart, which if known out, would mar his social image. Go...closer...! Have a little I want to know your world I want to learn more from you attitude, the shell would break and through the delicate crack you can see the same apprehensions, the same feelings, the same love me heart bubbles. Every brave facade has behind it the same touching lines, Amma, I am afraid of the unknown, I am afraid of the dark though I love reading Twilight saga, hold me now, help me select from all that you and this world have blessed me with (the range varies from online shopping designer wears, books through flipkart to courses and colleges, the list is endless). I am confused, show me a direction. Lead me my light, my guiding angel. There lies the cure. As parents and teachers we need to live a bit of our children s childhood. We need to wipe our glasses of negativity, we need to assert rules and impart values with more vigour. We need to take a reality check, slip off our coolness and divine looks a little and practise what we preach. We would, for sure, reach out to all our children. Issue nd Oct
